MongoDB, the open source NoSQL database, is going to acquire mobile database platform Realm. The purchase is certainly one with clear technological and strategic benefits for both companies - and with MongoDB paying $39 million for a company that has up to now raised $40 million since its launch in 2011, it's clear that this is a move that isn't about short term commercial gains. It's important to note that the acquisition is not yet complete. It's expected to close in January 2020 at the end of the second quarter MongoDB's fiscal year. Further details about the acquisition and what it means for both products, will be revealed at MongoDB World in June. Why is MongoDB acquiring Realm? In the materials that announce the launch there's a lot of talk about the alignment between the two projects. "The best thing in the world is when someone just gets you, and you get them" MongoDB CTO Eliot Horowitz wrote in a blog post accompanying the release, "because when you share a vision of the world like that, you can do incredible things together. That’s exactly the case with MongoDB and Realm." At a more fundamental level the acquisition allows MongoDB to do a number of things. It can reach a new community of developers  working primarily in mobile development (according to the press release Realm has 100,000 active users), but it also allows MongoDB to strengthen its capabilities as cloud evolves to become the dominant way that applications are built and hosted. According to Dev Ittycheria, MongoDB President and CEO, Realm "is a natural fit for our global cloud database, MongoDB Atlas, as well as a complement to Stitch, our serverless platform." Serverless might well be a nascent trend at the moment, but the level of conversation and interest around it indicates that it's going to play a big part in application developers lives in the months and years to come. What's in it for Realm? For Realm, the acquisition will give the project access to a new pool of users. With backing from MongoDB, is also provides robust foundations for the project to extend its roadmap and even move faster than it previously would have been able to. Realm CEO David Ratner wrote yesterday (April 24) that: "The combination of MongoDB and Realm will establish the modern standard for mobile application development and data synchronization for a new generation of connected applications and services. MongoDB and Realm are fully committed to investing in the Realm Database and the future of data synchronization, and taking both to the next phase of their evolution. We believe that MongoDB will help accelerate Realm’s product roadmap, go-to-market execution, and support our customers’ use cases at a whole new level of global operational scale." A new chapter for MongoDB? 2019 hasn't been the best year for MongoDB so far. The project withdrew its submission for its controversial Server Side Public License last month following news that Red Hat was dropping it from Enterprise Linux and Fedora. This brought an initiative that the leadership viewed as strategically important in defending MongoDB's interests to a dramatic halt. However, the Realm acquisition sets up a new chapter and could go some way in helping MongoDB bolster itself for a future that it has felt uncertain about.

Yesterday, at the PyTorch Developer Conference, Facebook announced the release of PyTorch 1.3. This release comes with three experimental features: named tensors, 8-bit model quantization, and PyTorch Mobile. Along with these exciting features, Facebook also announced the general availability of Google Cloud TPU support and a newly launched integration with Alibaba Cloud. Key updates in PyTorch 1.3 Named Tensors for more readable and maintainable code Though tensors are the building blocks of modern machine learning, researchers have argued that they are “broken.” Tensors have their own share of shortcomings: they expose private dimensions, broadcast based on absolute position, and keep the type information in the documentation. PyTorch 1.3 tries to solve this problem by introducing experimental support for named tensors, which was proposed by Sasha Rush, an Associate Professor at Cornell Tech. He has built a library called NamedTensor, which serves as a “thin-wrapper” on Torch tensor. This update introduces a few changes to the API. Dimension access and reduction now use a ‘dim’ argument instead of an index. Constructing and adding dimensions requires a “name” argument. Functions now broadcast based on set operations, not through heuristic ordering rules. 8-bit model quantization for mobile-optimized AI Quantization in deep learning is the method of approximating a neural network that uses 32-bit floating-point numbers by a neural network that uses a lower-precision numerical format. It is used to reduce the bandwidth and compute requirements of deep learning models. This is extremely essential for on-device applications that have limited memory size and number of computations. PyTorch 1.3 brings experimental support for 8-bit model quantization with the eager mode Python API for efficient deployment on servers and edge devices. This feature includes techniques like post-training quantization, dynamic quantization, and quantization-aware training. Moving from 32-bits to 8-bits can result in two to four times faster computations with one-quarter the memory usage. PyTorch Mobile for more efficient on-device machine learning Running machine learning models directly on edge devices is of great importance as it reduces latency. This is why PyTorch 1.3 introduces PyTorch Mobile that enables “an end-to-end workflow from Python to deployment on iOS and Android.” The current release is experimental. In the future releases, we can expect PyTorch Mobile to come with build-level optimization, selective compilation, support for QNNPACK quantized kernel libraries and ARM CPUs, further performance improvements, and more. Model interpretability and privacy tools in PyTorch 1.3 Captum and Captum Insights Captum is an easy-to-use model interpretability library for PyTorch. It is backed by state-of-the-art interpretability algorithms such as Integrated Gradients, DeepLIFT, and Conductance to help developers improve and troubleshoot their models. Developers can identify different features that contribute to a model’s output and improve its design. Facebook has also released an early release of Captum Insights. It is an interpretability visualization widget built on top of Captum. It works across images, text, and other features to help users understand feature attribution. Check out Facebook’s announcement to know more about Captum. CrypTen Machine learning via cloud-based platforms poses various security and privacy challenges. Facebook writes, “In particular, users of these platforms may not want or be able to share unencrypted data, which prevents them from taking full advantage of ML tools.” PyTorch 1.3 comes with CrypTen, a framework for privacy-preserving machine learning. It aims to make secure computing techniques accessible to machine learning practitioners. You can find more about CrypTen on GitHub. Libraries for multimodal AI systems Detectron2: It is an object detection library implemented in PyTorch. It features support for the latest models and tasks and increased flexibility to aid computer vision research. There are also improvements in maintainability and scalability to support production use cases. Fairseq gets speech extensions: With this release, Fairseq, a framework for sequence-to-sequence applications such as language translation includes support for end-to-end learning for speech and audio recognition tasks. The release of PyTorch 1.3 started a discussion on Hacker News and naturally many developers compared it with TensorFlow 2.0. Here’s what a user commented, “This is a common trend for being second in the market when we see Pytorch and TensorFlow 2.0, TF 2.0 was created to compete directly with Pytorch pythonic implementation (Keras based, Eager execution).” They further added, “Facebook at least on PyTorch has been delivering a quality product. Google researchers have unveiled a new real-time hand tracking algorithm that could be a new breakthrough for people communicating via sign language. Their algorithm uses machine learning to compute 3D keypoints of a hand from a video frame. This research is implemented in MediaPipe which is an open-source cross-platform framework for building multimodal (eg. video, audio, any time series data) applied ML pipelines. What is interesting is that the 3D hand perception can be viewed in real-time on a mobile phone. How real-time hand perception and gesture recognition works with MediaPipe? The algorithm is built using the MediaPipe framework. Within this framework, the pipeline is built as a directed graph of modular components. The pipeline employs three different models: a palm detector model, a handmark detector model and a gesture recognizer. The palm detector operates on full images and outputs an oriented bounding box. They employ a single-shot detector model called BlazePalm, They achieve an average precision of 95.7% in palm detection. Next, the hand landmark takes the cropped image defined by the palm detector and returns 3D hand keypoints. For detecting key points on the palm images, researchers manually annotated around 30K real-world images with 21 coordinates. They also generated a synthetic dataset to improve the robustness of the hand landmark detection model. The gesture recognizer then classifies the previously computed keypoint configuration into a discrete set of gestures. The algorithm determines the state of each finger, e.g. bent or straight, by the accumulated angles of joints. The existing pipeline supports counting gestures from multiple cultures, e.g. American, European, and Chinese, and various hand signs including “Thumb up”, closed fist, “OK”, “Rock”, and “Spiderman”. They also trained their models to work in a wide variety of lighting situations and with a diverse range of skin tones. Gesture recognition - Source: Google blog With MediaPipe, the researchers built their pipeline as a directed graph of modular components, called Calculators. Individual calculators like cropping, rendering , and neural network computations can be performed exclusively on the GPU. They employed TFLite GPU inference on most modern phones. The researchers are open sourcing the hand tracking and gesture recognition pipeline in the MediaPipe framework along with the source code. The researchers Valentin Bazarevsky and Fan Zhang write in a blog post, “Whereas current state-of-the-art approaches rely primarily on powerful desktop environments for inference, our method, achieves real-time performance on a mobile phone, and even scales to multiple hands. Yesterday, GitHub announced that it has acquired Semmle, a code analysis platform provider and also that it is now a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Numbering Authority. https://twitter.com/github/status/1174371016497405953 The Semmle acquisition is a part of the plan to securing the open-source supply chain, Nat Friedman explains in his blog post. Semmle provides a code analysis engine, named QL, which allows developers to write queries that identify code patterns in large codebases and search for vulnerabilities and their variants. Security researchers use Semmle to quickly find vulnerabilities in code with simple declarative queries. “Semmle is trusted by security teams at Uber, NASA, Microsoft, Google, and has helped find thousands of vulnerabilities in some of the largest codebases in the world, as well as over 100 CVEs in open source projects to date,” Friedman writes. Also Read: GitHub now supports two-factor authentication with security keys using the WebAuthn API Semmle originally spun out of research at Oxford in 2006 announced a $21 million Series B investment led by Accel Partners, last year. “In total, the company raised $31 million before this acquisition,” Techcrunch reports. Shanku Niyogi, Senior Vice President of Product at GitHub, in his blog post writes, “An important measure of the success of Semmle’s approach is the number of vulnerabilities that have been identified and disclosed through their technology. Today, over 100 CVEs in open source projects have been found using Semmle, including high-profile projects like Apache Struts, Apple’s XNU, the Linux Kernel, Memcached, U-Boot, and VLC. No other code analysis tool has a similar success rate.” GitHub also announced that it has been approved as a CVE Numbering Authority for open source projects. Now, GitHub will be able to issue CVEs for security advisories opened on GitHub, allowing for even broader awareness across the industry. With Semmle integration, every CVE-ID can be associated with a Semmle QL query, which can then be shared and tracked by the broader developer community. The CVE approval will make it easier for project maintainers to report security flaws directly from their repositories. Also, GitHub can assign CVE identifiers directly and post them to the CVE List and the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). Earlier this year, GitHub acquired Dependabot, to provide automatic security fixes natively within GitHub. With automatic security fixes, developers no longer need to manually patch their dependencies. When a vulnerability is found in a dependency, GitHub will automatically issue a pull request on downstream repositories with the information needed to accept the patch. In August, GitHub was in the limelight for being a part of the Capital One data breach that affected 106 million users in the US and Canada. The law firm Tycko & Zavareei LLP filed a lawsuit in California’s federal district court on behalf of their plaintiffs Seth Zielicke and Aimee Aballo. The complaint highlighted that Paige A. Thompson, the alleged hacker stole the data in March, posted about the theft on GitHub in April. According to the lawsuit, “As a result of GitHub’s failure to monitor, remove, or otherwise recognize and act upon obviously-hacked data that was displayed, disclosed, and used on or by GitHub and its website, the Personal Information sat on GitHub.com for nearly three months.” The Semmle acquisition may be GitHub’s move to improve security for users in the future. It would be interesting to know how GitHub will mold security for users with additional CVE approval. A user on Reddit writes, “I took part in a tutorial session Semmle held at a university CS society event, where we were shown how to use their system to write semantic analysis passes to look for things like use-after-free and null pointer dereferences. It was only an hour and a bit long, but I found the query language powerful & intuitive and the platform pretty effective. At the time, you could set up your codebase to run Semmle passes on pre-commit hooks or CI deployments etc. and get back some pretty smart reporting if you had introduced a bug.” The user further writes, “The session focused on Java, but a few other languages were supported as first-class, iirc. It felt kinda like writing an SQL query, but over AST rather than tuples in a table, and using modal logic to choose the selections. More than 1500 Google employees, around the world, are planning to walk out of their respective Google offices today, to protest against Google’s handling of sexual misconduct within the workplace, according to the New York Times. This is a part of the “women’s walkout” that was organized by more than 200 Google engineers, earlier this week as a response to Google’s handling of sexual misconduct in the recent past, that employees found as inadequate. The planning for the walkout was done last Friday, where Claire Stapleton, product marketing manager at Google’s YouTube created an internal mailing list to organize the walkout according to the New York Times. As the walkout was organized, more than 200 employees had joined in over the weekend, which has since grown to more than 1,500. The organizers took to Twitter, yesterday, to lay out five demands for change within the workplace. The protest has already started at Google’s Tokyo and Singapore office. This means that Google should no longer require people to waive their right to sue. In fact, every co-worker should be given the right to bring a co-worker, representative, or supporter of their choice when meeting with HR for filing a harassment claim. A commitment to end pay and opportunity inequity. This includes making sure that there are women of color at all the levels of the organization. There should also be transparent data on the gender, race, and ethnicity compensation gap, across both level and years of industry experience.  The methods and techniques that have been used to aggregate such data should also be transparent. A publicly disclosed sexual harassment transparency report. This includes the number of harassment claims at Google over time, types of claims submitted, how many victims and accused have left Google, details about exit packages and their worth. A clear, uniform, and globally inclusive process for reporting sexual misconduct safely and anonymously. This is because the current process in place is not working. HR’s performance is assessed by senior management and directors, which forces them to put the management’s interest ahead of the employees that report harassment and discrimination. Accountability, safety, and ability to report regarding unsafe working conditions should not be dictated by the employment status. Elevate the Chief Diversity Officer to answer directly to the CEO and make recommendations directly to the Board of Directors. Appoint an Employee Rep to the Board. The frustration among the Google employees surfaced after the New York Times report brought to light the shocking allegations against Andy Rubin’s (creator of Android) sexual misconduct at Google. As per the report, Rubin was accused of misbehavior in 2014 and the allegations were confirmed by Google. Due to this, he was asked to leave by former Google CEO, Mr.Page, but what’s discreditable is the fact that Google paid him $90 million as an exit package. Moreover,  he also received a high profile well-respected farewell by Google in October 2014. Also, the fact that senior executives such as Drummond, Chief Legal Officer, Alphabet, who were mentioned in the NY times report for indulging in “inappropriate relationships” within the organization continues to work in highly placed positions at Google and haven’t faced any real punitive action by Google for their past behavior. “We don’t want to feel that we’re unequal or we’re not respected anymore. Google’s famous for its culture. But in reality, we’re not even meeting the basics of respect, justice, and fairness for every single person here”, Stapleton told the NY Times. Google CEO Sundar Pichai had sent an email to all the Google employees, last Thursday, clarifying that the company has fired 48 people over the last two years for sexual harassment, out of whom, 13  were “senior managers and above”. He also mentioned how none of them received any exit packages. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, further apologized in an email obtained by Axios this Tuesday, saying that the “apology at TGIF didn’t come through, and it wasn’t enough”. Pichai also mentioned that he supports the engineers at Google who have organized a “walkout”. “I am taking in all your feedback so we can turn these ideas into action. We will have more to share soon. In the meantime, Eileen will make sure managers are aware of the activities planned for Thursday and that you have the support you need”, wrote Pichai. The very same day, news of Richard DeVaul, a director at unit X of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) whose name was also mentioned in the New York Times report, resigning from the company came to light. DeVaul had been accused of sexually harassing Star Simpson, a hardware engineer. DeVaul did not receive any exit package on his resignation. Last year, Dr. Johnny Ryan, the Chief Policy & Industry Relations Officer at Brave, filed a complaint against Google’s DoubleClick/Authorized Buyers ad business with the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). New evidence produced by Brave reveals that Google is circumventing GDPR and also undermining its own data protection measures. Brave calls Google’s Push Pages a GDPR workaround Brave’s new evidence rebuts some of Google’s claims regarding its DoubleClick/Authorized Buyers system, the world’s largest real-time advertising auction house. Google says that it prohibits companies that use its real-time bidding (RTB) ad system “from joining data they receive from the Cookie Matching Service.” In September last year, Google announced that it has removed encrypted cookie IDs and list names from bid requests with buyers in its Authorized Buyers marketplace. Brave’s research, however, found otherwise, “Brave’s new evidence reveals that Google allowed not only one additional party, but many, to match with Google identifiers. The evidence further reveals that Google allowed multiple parties to match their identifiers for the data subject with each other.” When you visit a website that has Google ads embedded on its web pages, Google will run a real-time bidding ad auction to determine which advertiser will get to display its ads. For this, it uses Push Pages, which is the mechanism in question here. Brave hired Zach Edwards, the co-founder of digital analytics startup Victory Medium, and MetaX, a company that audits data supply chains, to investigate and analyze a log of Dr. Ryan’s web browsing. The research revealed that Google's Push Pages can essentially be used as a workaround for user IDs. Google shares a ‘google_push’ identifier with the participating companies to identify a user. Brave says that the problem here is that the identifier that was shared was common to multiple companies. This means that these companies could have cross-referenced what they learned about the user from Google with each other. Used by more than 8.4 million websites, Google's DoubleClick/Authorized Buyers broadcasts personal data of users to 2000+ companies. This data includes the category of what a user is reading, which can reveal their political views, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, as well as their locations. There are also unique ID codes that are specific to a user that can let companies uniquely identify a user. All this information can give these companies a way to keep tabs on what users are “reading, watching, and listening to online.” Brave calls Google’s RTB data protection policies “weak” as they ask these companies to self-regulate. Google does not have much control over what these companies do with the data once broadcast. “Its policy requires only that the thousands of companies that Google shares peoples’ sensitive data with monitor their own compliance, and judge for themselves what they should do,” Brave wrote. A Google spokesperson, as a response to this news, told Forbes, “We do not serve personalised ads or send bid requests to bidders without user consent. The Irish DPC — as Google's lead DPA — and the UK ICO are already looking into real-time bidding in order to assess its compliance with GDPR. We welcome that work and are co-operating in full." Users recommend starting an “information campaign” instead of a penalty that will hardly affect the big tech This news triggered a discussion on Hacker News where users talked about the implications of RTB and what strict actions the EU can take to protect user privacy. A user explained, "So, let's say you're an online retailer, and you have Google IDs for your customers. You probably have some useful and sensitive customer information, like names, emails, addresses, and purchase histories. In order to better target your ads, you could participate in one of these exchanges, so that you can use the information you receive to suggest products that are as relevant as possible to each customer. To participate, you send all this sensitive information, along with a Google ID, and receive similar information from other retailers, online services, video games, banks, credit card providers, insurers, mortgage brokers, service providers, and more! And now you know what sort of vehicles your customers drive, how much they make, whether they're married, how many kids they have, which websites they browse, etc. So useful! And not only do you get all these juicy private details, but you've also shared your customers sensitive purchase history with anyone else who is connected to the exchange." Others said that a penalty is not going to deter Google. "The whole penalty system is quite silly. The fines destroy small companies who are the ones struggling to comply, and do little more than offer extremely gentle pokes on the wrist for megacorps that have relatively unlimited resources available for complete compliance, if they actually wanted to comply." Users suggested that the EU should instead start an information campaign. "EU should ignore the fines this time and start an "information campaign" regarding behavior of Google and others. I bet that hurts Google 10 times more." Some also said that not just Google but the RTB participants should also be held responsible. "Because what Google is doing is not dissimilar to how any other RTB participant is acting, saying this is a Google workaround seems disingenuous." With this case, Brave has launched a full-fledged campaign that aims to “reform the multi-billion dollar RTB industry spans sixteen EU countries.” To achieve this goal it has collaborated with several privacy NGOs and academics including the Open Rights Group, Dr. Michael Veale of the Turing Institute, among others. In other news, a Bloomberg report reveals that Google and other internet companies have recently asked for an amendment to the California Consumer Privacy Act, which will be enacted in 2020. The law currently limits how digital advertising companies collect and make money from user data. The amendments proposed include approval for collecting user data for targeted advertising, using the collected data from websites for their own analysis, and many others. Last week, 20,000 Google employees along with Temps, Vendors, and Contractors walked out to protest the discrimination, racism, and sexual harassment that they encountered at Google’s workplace. This global walkout by Google workers was a response to the New York times report on Google published last month, shielding senior executives accused of sexual misconduct. Yesterday, Google addressed these demands in a note written by Sundar Pichai to their employees. He admits that they have “not always gotten everything right in the past” and they are “sincerely sorry”  for the same. This supposedly ‘comprehensive’ plan will provide more transparency into how employees raise concerns and how Google will handle them. Here are some of the major changes that caught our attention: Following suite after Uber and Microsoft, Google has eliminated forced arbitration in cases of sexual harassment. Fostering a more transparent nature in reporting a sexual harassment case, employees can now be accompanied with support persons to the meetings with HR. Google is planning to update and expand their mandatory sexual harassment training. They will now be conducting these annually instead of once in two years. If an employee fails to complete his/her training, they will receive a one-rating dock in the employees performance review system. This applies to senior management as well where they could be downgraded from ‘exceeds expectation’ to ‘meets expectation’. They will turn increase focus towards diversity, equity and inclusion in 2019, through hiring, progression and retention, in order to create a more inclusive culture for everyone. Google found that one of the most common factors among the harassment complaints is that the perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol (~20% of cases). Stating the policy again, the plan mentions that excessive consumption of alcohol is not permitted when an employee is at work, performing Google business, or attending a Google-related event, whether onsite or offsite. Going forward, all leaders at the company will be expected to create teams, events, offsites and environments in which excessive alcohol consumption is strongly discouraged. They will be expected to follow the two-drink rule. Although the plan is a step towards making workplace conditions stable, it does leave out some of the more inherent concerns related to structural changes as stated by the organizers of the Google Walkout. For example, the structural inequity that separates ‘full time’ employees from contract workers. Contract workers make up more than half of Google’s workforce, and perform essential roles across the company. However, they receive few of the benefits associated with tech company employment. They are also largely women, people of color, immigrants, and people from working class backgrounds. “We demand a truly equitable culture, and Google leadership can achieve this by putting employee representation on the board and giving full rights and protections to contract workers, our most vulnerable workers, many of whom are Black and Brown women.” -Google Walkout Organizer Stephanie Parker Google’s plan to bring transparency at the workplace looks like a positive step towards improving their workplace culture. When historians study contemporary notions of data in the early 21st century, 2018 might well be a landmark year. In many ways this was the year when Big and Important Issues - from the personal to the political - began to surface. The techlash, a term which has defined the year, arguably emerged from conversations and debates about the uses and abuses of data. But while cynicism casts a shadow on the brightly lit data science landcape, there’s still a lot of optimism out there. And more importantly, data isn’t going to drop off the agenda any time soon. However, the changing conversation in 2018 does mean that the way data scientists, analysts, and engineers use data and build solutions for it will change. A renewed emphasis on ethics and security is now appearing, which will likely shape 2019 trends. But what will these trends be? Let’s take a look at some of the most important areas to keep an eye on in the new year. Meta learning and automated machine learning One of the key themes of data science and artificial intelligence in 2019 will be doing more with less. There are a number of ways in which this will manifest itself. The first is meta learning. This is a concept that aims to improve the way that machine learning systems actually work by running machine learning on machine learning systems. Essentially this allows a machine learning algorithm to learn how to learn. By doing this, you can better decide which algorithm is most appropriate for a given problem. Find out how to put meta learning into practice. Learn with Hands On Meta Learning with Python. Automated machine learning is closely aligned with meta learning. One way of understanding it is to see it as putting the concept of automating the application of meta learning. So, if meta learning can help better determine which machine learning algorithms should be applied and how they should be designed, automated machine learning makes that process a little smoother. It builds the decision making into the machine learning solution. Fundamentally, it’s all about “algorithm selection, hyper-parameter tuning, iterative modelling, and model assessment,” as Matthew Mayo explains on KDNuggets. Automated machine learning tools What’s particularly exciting about automated machine learning is that there are already a number of tools that make it relatively easy to do. AutoML is a set of tools developed by Google that can be used on the Google Cloud Platform, while auto-sklearn, built around the scikit-learn library, provides a similar out of the box solution for automated machine learning. Although both AutoML and auto-sklearn are very new, there are newer tools available that could dominate the landscape: AutoKeras and AdaNet. AutoKeras is built on Keras (the Python neural network library), while AdaNet is built on TensorFlow. Both could be more affordable open source alternatives to AutoML. Whichever automated machine learning library gains the most popularity will remain to be seen, but one thing is certain: it makes deep learning accessible to many organizations who previously wouldn’t have had the resources or inclination to hire a team of PhD computer scientists. But it’s important to remember that automated machine learning certainly doesn’t mean automated data science. While tools like AutoML will help many organizations build deep learning models for basic tasks, for organizations that need a more developed data strategy, the role of the data scientist will remain vital. You can’t after all, automate away strategy and decision making. It's not just cutting-edge, it's mind-bending. But in real-world terms it also continues the theme of doing more with less. Explaining quantum computing can be tricky, but the fundamentals are this: instead of a binary system (the foundation of computing as we currently know it), which can be either 0 or 1, in a quantum system you have qubits, which can be 0, 1 or both simultaneously. (If you want to learn more, read this article). What Quantum computing means for developers So, what does this mean in practice? Essentially, because the qubits in a quantum system can be multiple things at the same time, you are then able to run much more complex computations. Think about the difference in scale: running a deep learning system on a binary system has clear limits. Yes, you can scale up in processing power, but you’re nevertheless constrained by the foundational fact of zeros and ones. In a quantum system where that restriction no longer exists, the scale of the computing power at your disposal increases astronomically. Once you understand the fundamental proposition, it becomes much easier to see why the likes of IBM and Google are clamouring to develop and deploy quantum technology. One of the most talked about use cases is using Quantum computers to find even larger prime numbers (a move which contains risks given prime numbers are the basis for much modern encryption). But there other applications, such as in chemistry, where complex subatomic interactions are too detailed to be modelled by a traditional computer. It’s important to note that Quantum computing is still very much in its infancy. While Google and IBM are leading the way, they are really only researching the area. It certainly hasn’t been deployed or applied in any significant or sustained way. But this isn’t to say that it should be ignored. It’s going to have a huge impact on the future, and more importantly it’s plain interesting. Even if you don’t think you’ll be getting to grips with quantum systems at work for some time (a decade at best), understanding the principles and how it works in practice will not only give you a solid foundation for major changes in the future, it will also help you better understand some of the existing challenges in scientific computing. And, of course, it will also make you a decent conversationalist at dinner parties. Who's driving Quantum computing forward? If you want to get started, Microsoft has put together the Quantum Development Kit, which includes the first quantum-specific programming language Q#. IBM, meanwhile, has developed its own Quantum experience, which allows engineers and researchers to run quantum computations in the IBM cloud. As you investigate these tools you’ll probably get the sense that no one’s quite sure what to do with these technologies. And that’s fine - if anything it makes it the perfect time to get involved and help further research and thinking on the topic. Get a head start in the Quantum Computing revolution. Pre-order Mastering Quantum Computing with IBM QX.           Edge analytics and digital twins While Quantum lingers on the horizon, the concept of the edge has quietly planted itself at the very center of the IoT revolution. IoT might still be the term that business leaders and, indeed, wider society are talking about, for technologists and engineers, none of its advantages would be possible without the edge. Edge computing or edge analytics is essentially about processing data at the edge of a network rather than within a centralized data warehouse. Again, as you can begin to see, the concept of the edge allows you to do more with less. More speed, less bandwidth (as devices no longer need to communicate with data centers), and, in theory, more data. In the context of IoT, where just about every object in existence could be a source of data, moving processing and analytics to the edge can only be a good thing. Will the edge replace the cloud? There's a lot of conversation about whether edge will replace cloud. It won't. But it probably will replace the cloud as the place where we run artificial intelligence. For example, instead of running powerful analytics models in a centralized space, you can run them at different points across the network. This will dramatically improve speed and performance, particularly for those applications that run on artificial intelligence. A more distributed world Think of it this way: just as software has become more distributed in the last few years, thanks to the emergence of the edge, data itself is going to be more distributed. We'll have billions of pockets of activity, whether from consumers or industrial machines, a locus of data-generation. Find out how to put the principles of edge analytics into practice: Azure IoT Development Cookbook Digital twins An emerging part of the edge computing and analytics trend is the concept of digital twins. This is, admittedly, still something in its infancy, but in 2019 it’s likely that you’ll be hearing a lot more about digital twins. A digital twin is a digital replica of a device that engineers and software architects can monitor, model and test. For example, if you have a digital twin of a machine, you could run tests on it to better understand its points of failure. You could also investigate ways you could make the machine more efficient. More importantly, a digital twin can be used to help engineers manage the relationship between centralized cloud and systems at the edge - the digital twin is essentially a layer of abstraction that allows you to better understand what’s happening at the edge without needing to go into the detail of the system. For those of us working in data science, digital twins provide better clarity and visibility on how disconnected aspects of a network interact. If we’re going to make 2019 the year we use data more intelligently - maybe even more humanely - then this is precisely the sort of thing we need. Interpretability, explainability, and ethics Doing more with less might be one of the ongoing themes in data science and big data in 2019, but we can’t ignore the fact that ethics and security will remain firmly on the agenda. Although it’s easy to dismiss these issues issues as separate from the technical aspects of data mining, processing, and analytics, but it is, in fact, deeply integrated into it. One of the key facets of ethics are two related concepts: explainability and interpretability. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but there are some subtle differences. Explainability is the extent to which the inner-working of an algorithm can be explained in human terms, while interpretability is the extent to which one can understand the way in which it is working (eg. predict the outcome in a given situation). So, an algorithm can be interpretable, but you might not quite be able to explain why something is happening. (Think about this in the context of scientific research: sometimes, scientists know that a thing is definitely happening, but they can’t provide a clear explanation for why it is.) Improving transparency and accountability Either way, interpretability and explainability are important because they can help to improve transparency in machine learning and deep learning algorithms. In a world where deep learning algorithms are being applied to problems in areas from medicine to justice - where the problem of accountability is particularly fraught - this transparency isn’t an option, it’s essential. In practice, this means engineers must tweak the algorithm development process to make it easier for those outside the process to understand why certain things are happening and why they aren't. To a certain extent, this ultimately requires the data science world to take the scientific method more seriously than it has done. Rather than just aiming for accuracy (which is itself often open to contestation), the aim is to constantly manage that gap between what we’re trying to achieve with an algorithm and how it goes about actually doing that. You can learn the basics of building explainable machine learning models in the Getting Started with Machine Learning in Python video.          Transparency and innovation must go hand in hand in 2019 So, there are two fundamental things for data science in 2019: improving efficiency, and improving transparency. Although the two concepts might look like the conflict with each other, it's actually a bit of a false dichotomy. If we realised that 12 months ago, we might have avoided many of the issues that have come to light this year. Transparency has to be a core consideration for anyone developing systems for analyzing and processing data. Without it, the work your doing might be flawed or unnecessary. You’re only going to need to add further iterations to rectify your mistakes or modify the impact of your biases. With this in mind, now is the time to learn the lessons of 2018’s techlash. We need to commit to stopping the miserable conveyor belt of scandal and failure. Now is the time to find new ways to build better artificial intelligence systems.

Yesterday, Google employees have signed a petition protesting Google’s infamous Project Dragonfly. “We are Google employees and we join Amnesty International in calling on Google to cancel project Dragonfly”, they wrote on a post on Medium. This petition also marks the first time over 300 Google employees (at the time of writing this post) have used their actual names in a public document. Project Dragonfly is the secretive search engine that Google is allegedly developing which will comply with the Chinese rules of censorship. It has been on the receiving end of constant backlash from various human rights organizations and investigative reporters, since it was revealed earlier this year. On Monday, it also faced critique from human rights organization Amnesty International. Amnesty launched a petition opposing the project, and coordinated protests outside Google offices around the world including San Francisco, Berlin, Toronto and London. https://twitter.com/amnesty/status/1067488964167327744 Yesterday, Google employees joined Amnesty and wrote an open letter to the firm. “We are protesting against Google’s effort to create a censored search engine for the Chinese market that enables state surveillance. Our opposition to Dragonfly is not about China: we object to technologies that aid the powerful in oppressing the vulnerable, wherever they may be. Dragonfly in China would establish a dangerous precedent at a volatile political moment, one that would make it harder for Google to deny other countries similar concessions. Dragonfly would also enable censorship and government-directed disinformation, and destabilize the ground truth on which popular deliberation and dissent rely.” Employees have expressed their disdain over Google’s decision by calling it a money-minting business. They have also highlighted Google’s previous disappointments including Project Maven, Dragonfly, and Google’s support for abusers, and believe that “Google is no longer willing to place its values above its profits. This is why we’re taking a stand.” Google spokesperson has redirected to their previous response on the topic: "We've been investing for many years to help Chinese users, from developing Android, through mobile apps such as Google Translate and Files Go, and our developer tools. But our work on search has been exploratory, and we are not close to launching a search product in China." At the ongoing Microsoft Build 2019 conference, Microsoft has announced a ton of new features and tool releases with a focus on innovation using AI and mixed reality with the intelligent cloud and the intelligent edge. In his opening keynote, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella outlined the company’s vision and developer opportunity across Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and IoT Platform, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Gaming. “As computing becomes embedded in every aspect of our lives, the choices developers make will define the world we live in,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “Microsoft is committed to providing developers with trusted tools and platforms spanning every layer of the modern technology stack to build magical experiences that create new opportunity for everyone.” https://youtu.be/rIJRFHDr1QE Increasing developer productivity in Microsoft 365 platform Microsoft Graph data connect Microsoft Graphs are now powered with data connectivity, a service that combines analytics data from the Microsoft Graph with customers’ business data. Microsoft Graph data connect will provide Office 365 data and Microsoft Azure resources to users via a toolset. The migration pipelines are deployed and managed through Azure Data Factory. Microsoft Graph data connect can be used to create new apps shared within enterprises or externally in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. It is generally available as a feature in Workplace Analytics and also as a standalone SKU for ISVs. More information here. Microsoft Search Microsoft Search works as a unified search experience across all Microsoft apps-  Office, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Bing and Windows. It applies AI technology from Bing and deep personalized insights surfaced by the Microsoft Graph to personalized searches. Other features included in Microsoft Search are: Search box displacement Zero query typing and key-phrase suggestion feature Query history feature, and personal search query history Administrator access to the history of popular searches for their organizations, but not to search history for individual users Files/people/site/bookmark suggestions Microsoft Search will begin publicly rolling out to all Microsoft 365 and Office 365 commercial subscriptions worldwide at the end of May. Read more on MS Search here. Fluid Framework As the name suggests Microsoft's newly launched Fluid framework allows seamless editing and collaboration between different applications. Essentially, it is a web-based platform and componentized document model that allows users to, for example, edit a document in an application like Word and then share a table from that document in Microsoft Teams (or even a third-party application) with real-time syncing. Microsoft says Fluid can translate text, fetch content, suggest edits, perform compliance checks, and more. The company will launch the software developer kit and the first experiences powered by the Fluid Framework later this year on Microsoft Word, Teams, and Outlook. Read more about Fluid framework here. Microsoft Edge new features Microsoft Build 2019 paved way for a bundle of new features to Microsoft’s flagship web browser, Microsoft Edge. New features include: Internet Explorer mode: This mode integrates Internet Explorer directly into the new Microsoft Edge via a new tab. This allows businesses to run legacy Internet Explorer-based apps in a modern browser. Privacy Tools: Additional privacy controls which allow customers to choose from 3 levels of privacy in Microsoft Edge—Unrestricted, Balanced, and Strict. These options limit third parties to track users across the web.  “Unrestricted” allows all third-party trackers to work on the browser. “Balanced” prevents third-party trackers from sites the user has not visited before. And “Strict” blocks all third-party trackers. Collections: Collections allows users to collect, organize, share and export content more efficiently and with Office integration. New toolkit enhancements in Microsoft 365 Platform Windows Terminal Windows Terminal is Microsoft’s new application for Windows command-line users. Top features include: User interface with emoji-rich fonts and graphics-processing-unit-accelerated text rendering Multiple tab support and theming and customization features Powerful command-line user experience for users of PowerShell, Cmd, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and all forms of command-line application Windows Terminal will arrive in mid-June and will be delivered via the Microsoft Store in Windows 10. Read more here. React Native for Windows Microsoft announced a new open-source project for React Native developers at Microsoft Build 2019. Developers who prefer to use the React/web ecosystem to write user-experience components can now leverage those skills and components on Windows by using “React Native for Windows” implementation. React for Windows is under the MIT License and will allow developers to target any Windows 10 device, including PCs, tablets, Xbox, mixed reality devices and more. The project is being developed on GitHub and is available for developers to test. More mature releases will follow soon. Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 Microsoft rolled out a new architecture for Windows Subsystem for Linux: WSL 2 at the MSBuild 2019. Microsoft will also be shipping a fully open-source Linux kernel with Windows specially tuned for WSL 2. New features include massive file system performance increases (twice as much speed for file-system heavy operations, such as Node Package Manager install). WSL also supports running Linux Docker containers. The next generation of WSL arrives for Insiders in mid-June. More information here. New releases in multiple Developer Tools .NET 5 arrives in 2020 .NET 5 is the next major version of the .NET Platform which will be available in 2020. .NET 5 will have all .NET Core features as well as more additions: One Base Class Library containing APIs for building any type of application More choice on runtime experiences Java interoperability will be available on all platforms. Objective-C and Swift interoperability will be supported on multiple operating systems .NET 5 will provide both Just-in-Time (JIT) and Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compilation models to support multiple compute and device scenarios. .NET 5 also will offer one unified toolchain supported by new SDK project types as well as a flexible deployment model (side-by-side and self-contained EXEs) Detailed information here. ML.NET 1.0 ML.NET is Microsoft’s open-source and cross-platform framework that runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and makes machine learning accessible for .NET developers. Its new version, ML.NET 1.0, was released at the Microsoft Build Conference 2019 yesterday. Some new features in this release are: Automated Machine Learning Preview: Transforms input data by selecting the best performing ML algorithm with the right settings. AutoML support in ML.NET is in preview and currently supports Regression and Classification ML tasks. ML.NET Model Builder Preview: Model Builder is a simple UI tool for developers which uses AutoML to build ML models. It also generates model training and model consumption code for the best performing model. ML.NET CLI Preview: ML.NET CLI is a dotnet tool which generates ML.NET Models using AutoML and ML.NET. The ML.NET CLI quickly iterates through a dataset for a specific ML Task and produces the best model. Visual Studio IntelliCode, Microsoft’s tool for AI-assisted coding Visual Studio IntelliCode, Microsoft’s AI-assisted coding is now generally available. It is essentially an enhanced IntelliSense, Microsoft’s extremely popular code completion tool. Intellicode is trained by using the code of thousands of open-source projects from GitHub that have at least 100 stars. It is available for C# and XAML for Visual Studio and Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python for Visual Studio Code. IntelliCode also is included by default in Visual Studio 2019, starting in version 16.1 Preview 2. Additional capabilities, such as custom models, remain in public preview. Visual Studio 2019 version 16.1 Preview 2 Visual Studio 2019 version 16.1 Preview 2 release includes IntelliCode and the GitHub extensions by default. It also brings out of preview the Time Travel Debugging feature introduced with version 16.0. Also includes multiple performances and productivity improvements for .NET and C++ developers. Gaming and Mixed Reality Minecraft AR game for mobile devices At the end of Microsoft’s Build 2019 keynote yesterday, Microsoft teased a new Minecraft game in augmented reality, running on a phone. Last week, a team of researchers from Stanford University, Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Princeton University and Adobe Research published a paper titled “Text-based Editing of Talking-head Video”. This paper proposes a method to edit a talking-head video based on its transcript to produce a realistic output video, in which the dialogue of the speaker has been modified. Basically, the editor modifies a video using a text transcript, to add new words, delete unwanted ones or completely rearrange the pieces by dragging and dropping. This video will maintain a seamless audio-visual flow, without any jump cuts and will look almost flawless to the untrained eye. The researchers want this kind of text-based editing approach to lay the foundation for better editing tools, in post production of movies and television. Actors often botch small bits of performance or leave out a critical word. This algorithm can help video editors fix that, which has until now involves expensive reshoots. It can also help in easy adaptation of audio-visual video content to specific target audiences. The tool supports three types of edit operations- add new words, rearrange existing words, delete existing words. Ohad Fried, a researcher in the paper says that “This technology is really about better storytelling. Instructional videos might be fine-tuned to different languages or cultural backgrounds, for instance, or children’s stories could be adapted to different ages.” https://youtu.be/0ybLCfVeFL4 How does the application work? The method uses an input talking-head video and a transcript to perform text-based editing. The first step is to align phonemes to the input audio and track each input frame to construct a parametric head model. Next, a 3D parametric face model with each frame of the input talking-head video is registered. This helps in selectively blending different aspects of the face. Then, a background sequence is selected and is used for pose data and background pixels. The background sequence allows editors to edit challenging videos with hair movement and slight camera motion. As Facial expressions are an important parameter, the researchers have tried to preserve the retrieved expression parameters as much as possible, by smoothing out the transition between them. This provides an output of edited parameter sequence which describes the new desired facial motion and a corresponding retimed background video clip. This is forwarded to a ‘neural face rendering’ approach. This step changes the facial motion of the retimed background video to match the parameter sequence. Thus the rendering procedure produces photo-realistic video frames of the subject, appearing to speak the new phrase.These localized edits seamlessly blends into the original video, producing an edited result. Lastly to add the audio, the resulted video is retimed to match the recording at the level of phones. The researchers have used the performers own voice in all their synthesis results. Image Source: Text-based Editing of Talking-head Video The researchers have tested the system with a series of complex edits including adding, removing and changing words, as well as translations to different languages. When the application was tried in a crowd-sourced study with 138 participants, the edits were rated as “real”, almost 60% of the time. Fried said that “The visual quality is such that it is very close to the original, but there’s plenty of room for improvement.” Ethical considerations: Erosion of truth, confusion and defamation Even though the application is quite useful for video editors and producers, it raises important and valid concerns about its potential for misuse. The researchers have also agreed that such a technology might be used for illicit purposes. “We acknowledge that bad actors might use such technologies to falsify personal statements and slander prominent individuals. We are concerned about such deception and misuse.” They have recommended certain precautions to be taken to avoid deception and misuse such as using watermarking. “The fact that the video is synthesized may be obvious by context, directly stated in the video or signaled via watermarking. We also believe that it is essential to obtain permission from the performers for any alteration before sharing a resulting video with a broad audience.” They urge the community to continue to develop forensics, fingerprinting and verification techniques to identify manipulated video. They also support the creation of appropriate regulations and laws that would balance the risks of misuse of these tools against the importance of creative, consensual use cases. The public however remain dubious pointing out valid arguments on why the ‘Ethical Concerns’ talked about in the paper, fail. A user on Hacker News comments, “The "Ethical concerns" section in the article feels like a punt. The author quoting "this technology is really about better storytelling" is aspirational -- the technology's story will be written by those who use it, and you can bet people will use this maliciously.” https://twitter.com/glenngabe/status/1136667296980701185 Another user feels that such kind of technology will only result in “slow erosion of video evidence being trustworthy”. Others have pointed out how the kind of transformation mentioned in the paper, does not come under the broad category of ‘video-editing’ ‘We need more words to describe this new landscape’ https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1136710962348617728 Another common argument is that the algorithm can be used to generate terrifyingly real Deepfake videos. A Shallow Fake video was Nancy Pelosi’s altered video, which circulated recently, that made it appear she was slurring her words by slowing down the video. Facebook was criticized for not acting faster to slow the video’s spread. Not just altering speeches of politicians, altered videos like these can also, for instance, be used to create fake emergency alerts, or disrupt elections by dropping a fake video of one of the candidates before voting starts. There is also the issue of defaming someone on a personal capacity. Sam Gregory, Program Director at Witness, tweets that one of the main steps in ensuring effective use of such tools would be to “ensure that any commercialization of synthetic media tools has equal $ invested in detection/safeguards as in detection.; and to have a grounded conversation on trade-offs in mitigation”. According to a complaint filed in a lawsuit yesterday, Google paid $135 million in total as exit packages to top two senior execs, namely Andy Rubin (creator of Android) and Amit Singhal (former senior VP of Google search) after they were accused of sexual misconduct in the company. The lawsuit was filed by an Alphabet shareholder, James Martin, in the Santa Clara, California Court. Google also confirmed paying the exit packages to senior execs to The Verge, yesterday. Speaking of the lawsuit, the complaint is against certain directors and officers of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, for their active and direct participation in “multi-year scheme” to hide sexual harassment and discrimination at Alphabet. It also states that the misconduct by these directors has caused severe financial and reputational damage to Alphabet. The exit packages for Rubin and Singhal were approved by the Leadership Development and Compensation Committee (LLDC). The news of Google paying high exit packages to its top execs first came to light last October, after the New York Times released a report on Google, stating that the firm paid $90 million to Rubin and $15 million to Singhal. Rubin had previously also received an offer for a $150 million stock grant, which he then further use to negotiate the $90 million in severance pay, even though he should have been fired for cause without any pay, states the lawsuit. To protest against the handling of sexual misconduct within Google, more than 20,000 Google employees along with vendors, and contractors, temps, organized Google “walkout for real change” and walked out of their offices in November 2018. Googlers also launched an industry-wide awareness campaign to fight against forced arbitration in January, where they shared information about arbitration on their Twitter and Instagram accounts throughout the day.   Last year in November, Google ended its forced arbitration ( a move that was soon followed by Facebook) for its employees (excluding temps, vendors, etc) and only in the case of sexual harassment. This led to contractors writing an open letter on Medium to Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, in December, demanding him to address their demands of better conditions and equal benefits for contractors. In response to the Google walkout and the growing public pressure, Google finally decided to end its forced arbitration policy for all employees (including contractors) and for all kinds of discrimination within Google, last month. The changes will go into effect for all the Google employees starting March 21st, 2019. Yesterday, the Google walkout for real change group tweeted condemning the multi-million dollar payouts and has asked people to use the hashtag #Googlepayoutsforall to highlight other better ways that money could have been used. https://twitter.com/GoogleWalkout/status/1105450565193121792 “The conduct of Rubin and other executives was disgusting, illegal, immoral, degrading to women and contrary to every principle that Google claims it abides by”, reads the lawsuit. James Martin also filed a lawsuit against Alphabet’s board members, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt earlier this year in January for covering up the sexual harassment allegations against the former top execs at Google. Martin had sued Alphabet for breaching its fiduciary duty to shareholders, unjust enrichment, abuse of power, and corporate waste. “The directors’ wrongful conduct allowed illegal conduct to proliferate and continue. As such, members of the Alphabet’s board were knowing direct enables of sexual harassment and discrimination”, reads the lawsuit. It also states that the board members not only violated the California and federal law but it also violated the ethical standards and guidelines set by Alphabet. They talked about the challenges involved in generating the images and how they address this issue with the help of Subscale Pixel Network (SPN). It is a conditional decoder architecture that helps in generating an image as a sequence of image slices of equal size. They also explained how Multidimensional Upscaling is used to grow an image in both size and depth via intermediate stages corresponding to distinct SPNs. There were in all 10 workshops conducted on the same day based on AI and deep learning covering topics such as, The 2nd Learning from Limited Labeled Data (LLD) Workshop: Representation Learning for Weak Supervision and Beyond Deep Reinforcement Learning Meets Structured Prediction AI for Social Good Debugging Machine Learning Models The first day also witnessed a few interesting talks on neural networks covering topics such as The Lottery Ticket Hypothesis: Finding Sparse, Trainable Neural Networks, How Powerful are Graph Neural Networks? etc. Overall the first day was quite enriching and informative. She then highlighted a set of "grand challenge" problems and discussed various ways in which Machine Learning is helping to advance our capacity to address these. Protein structure with a differentiable simulator On the second day of ICLR 2019, Chris Sander, computational biologist, John Ingraham, Adam J Riesselman, and Debora Marks from Harvard University, talked on Learning protein structure with a differentiable simulator. They about the protein folding problem and their aim to bridge the gap between the expressive capacity of energy functions and the practical capabilities of their simulators by using an unrolled Monte Carlo simulation as a model for data. They also composed a neural energy function with a novel and efficient simulator which is based on Langevin dynamics for building an end-to-end-differentiable model of atomic protein structure given amino acid sequence information. They also discussed certain techniques for stabilizing backpropagation and demonstrated the model's capacity to make multimodal predictions. He then discussed the several developmental forces that guide exploration in large real-world spaces. He also talked about the models of curiosity-driven autonomous learning that enables machines to sample and explore their own goals and learning strategies. He then explained how these models and techniques can be successfully applied in the domain of educational technologies. Generating knockoffs for feature selection using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) Another interesting topic on the third day of ICLR 2019 was Generating knockoffs for feature selection using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) by James Jordon from Oxford University, Jinsung Yoon from California University, and Mihaela Schaar Professor at UCLA. The experts talked about the Generative Adversarial Networks framework that helps in generating knockoffs with no assumptions on the feature distribution. They also talked about the model they created which consists of 4 networks, a generator, a discriminator, a stability network and a power network. They further demonstrated the capability of their model to perform feature selection. Followed by few more interesting topics like Deterministic Variational Inference for Robust Bayesian Neural Networks, there were series of poster presentations. ICLR 2019 Day 4 highlights: Neural networks, RNN, neuro-symbolic concepts and much more Learning natural language interfaces with neural models Today’s focus was more on neural models and neuro symbolic concepts. The day started with a talk on Learning natural language interfaces with neural models by Mirella Lapata, a computer scientist. She gave an overview of recent progress on learning natural language interfaces which allow users to interact with various devices and services using everyday language. She also addressed the structured prediction problem of mapping natural language utterances onto machine-interpretable representations. She further outlined the various challenges it poses and described a general modeling framework based on neural networks which tackle these challenges. In this talk, the experts focused on how they proposed a new RNN unit: ON-LSTM, which achieves good performance on four different tasks including language modeling, unsupervised parsing, targeted syntactic evaluation, and logical inference. The last day of ICLR 2019 was exciting and helped the researchers present their innovations and attendees got a chance to interact with the experts. Salesforce, one of the world's leading CRM platforms, is buying data visualization software Tableau in an all-stock deal worth $15.7 billion. The news comes just days after it emerged that Google is buying one of Tableau's competitors in the data visualization market, Looker. Taken together, the stories highlight the importance of analytics to some of the planet's biggest companies. They suggest that despite years of the big data revolution, it's only now that market-leading platforms are starting to realise that their customers want the level of capabilities offered by the best in the data visualization space. Salesforce shareholders will use their stock to purchase Tableau. As the press release published on the Salesforce site explains "each share of Tableau Class A and Class B common stock will be exchanged for 1.103 shares of Salesforce common stock, representing an enterprise value of $15.7 billion (net of cash), based on the trailing 3-day volume weighted average price of Salesforce's shares as of June 7, 2019." The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of October 2019. https://twitter.com/tableau/status/1138040596604575750 Why is Salesforce buying Tableau? The deal is an incredible result for Tableau shareholders. At the end of last week, its market cap was $10.7 billion. This has led to some scepticism about just how good a deal this is for Salesforce. One commenter on Hacker News said "this seems really high for a company without earnings and a weird growth curve. Their ticker is cool and maybe sales force [sic] wants to be DATA on nasdaq. Otherwise, it will be hard to justify this high markup for a tool company." With Salesforce shares dropping 4.5% as markets opened this week, it seems investors are inclined to agree - Salesforce is certainly paying a premium for Tableau. However, whatever the long term impact of the acquisition, the price paid underlines the fact that Salesforce views Tableau as exceptionally important to its long term strategy. It opens up an opportunity for Salesforce to reposition and redefine itself as much more than just a CRM platform. It means it can start compete with the likes of Microsoft, which has a full suite of professional and business intelligence tools. Moreover, it also provides the platform with another way of potentially onboarding customers - given Tableau is well-known as a powerful yet accessible data visualization tool, it create an avenue through which new users can find their way to the Salesforce product. Marc Benioff, Chair and co-CEO of Salesforce, said "we are bringing together the world’s #1 CRM with the #1 analytics platform. Tableau helps people see and understand data, and Salesforce helps people engage and understand customers. It’s truly the best of both worlds for our customers--bringing together two critical platforms that every customer needs to understand their world.” Tableau has been a target for Salesforce for some time. Leaked documents from 2016 found that the data visualization was one of 14 companies that Salesforce had an interest in (another was LinkedIn, which would eventually be purchased by Microsoft). For Tableau, there are many other benefits of being purchased by Salesforce alongside the money. Primarily this is about expanding the platform's reach - Salesforce users are people who are interested in data with a huge range of use cases. By joining up with Salesforce, Tableau will become their go-to data visualization tool. "As our two companies began joint discussions," Tableau CEO Adam Selipsky said, "the possibilities of what we might do together became more and more intriguing. They have leading capabilities across many CRM areas including sales, marketing, service, application integration, AI for analytics and more. They have a vast number of field personnel selling to and servicing customers. They have incredible reach into the fabric of so many customers, all of whom need rich analytics capabilities and visual interfaces... On behalf of our customers, we began to dream about we might accomplish if we could combine our ability to help people see and understand data with their ability to help people engage and understand customers." What will happen to Tableau? Tableau won't be going anywhere. It will continue to exist under its own brand with the current leadership all remaining, including Selipsky. What does this all mean for the technology market? At the moment, it's too early to say - but the last year or so has seen some major high-profile acquisitions by tech companies. Perhaps we're seeing the emergence of a tooling arms race as the biggest organizations attempt to arm themselves with ecosystems of established market-leading tools. Whether this is good or bad for users remains to be seen, however.

Virtual assistants like Alexa and smart speakers are being increasingly used in today’s time because of the convenience they come packaged with. It is good to have someone play a song or restock your groceries just on your one command, or probably more than one command. You get the point! But, how comfortable will you be if these assistants can provide you some medical advice? Amazon has teamed up with UK’s National Health Service (NHS) to make Alexa your new medical consultant. One of the striking advantages of voice-enabled digital assistants is that the elderly, the blind and those who are unable to access the internet in other ways can also benefit from them. UK’s health secretary, Matt Hancock, believes that “embracing” such technologies will not only reduce the pressure General Practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists face but will also encourage people to take better control of their health care. He adds, "We want to empower every patient to take better control of their healthcare." Partnering with Amazon is just one of many steps by NHS to adopt technology for healthcare. The NHS launched a full-fledged unit named NHSX (where X stands for User Experience) last week. Its mission is to provide staff and citizens “the technology they need” with an annual investment of more than $1 billion a year. This partnership was announced last year and NHS plans to partner with other companies such as Microsoft in the future to achieve its goal of “modernizing health services.” Can we consider Alexa’s advice safe Voice assistants are very fun and convenient to use, but only when they are actually working. Many a time it happens that the assistant fails to understand something and we have to yell the command again and again, which makes the experience outright frustrating. Furthermore, the track record of consulting the web to diagnose our symptoms has not been the most accurate one. Many Twitter users trolled this decision saying that Alexa is not yet capable of doing simple tasks like playing a song accurately and the NHS budget could have been instead used on additional NHS staff, lowering drug prices, and many other facilities. The public was also left sore because the government has given Amazon a new means to make a profit, instead of forcing them to pay taxes. Earlier this month, it admitted that a few voice recordings made by Alexa are never deleted from the company's server, even when the user manually deletes them. Another news in April this year revealed that when you speak to an Echo smart speaker, not only does Alexa but potentially Amazon employees also listen to your requests. Last month, two lawsuits were filed in Seattle stating that Amazon is recording voiceprints of children using its Alexa devices without their consent. Last year, an Amazon Echo user in Portland, Oregon was shocked when she learned that her Echo device recorded a conversation with her husband and sent the audio file to one of his employees in Seattle. Amazon confirmed that this was an error because of which the device’s microphone misheard a series of words. Another creepy, yet funny incident was when Alexa users started hearing an unprompted laugh from their smart speaker devices. But, these promises are hard to believe when there is so many news of data breaches involving these companies. Last year, a German computer magazine c’t reported that a user received 1,700 Alexa voice recordings from Amazon when he asked for copies of the personal data Amazon has about him. Many experts also raised their concerns about using Alexa for giving medical advice. Healthcare is made inaccessible when trust and privacy is stripped away, and that's what this terrible plan would do. It's a data protection disaster waiting to happen." Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, of the Royal College of GPs, believes that the move has "potential", especially for minor ailments. She added that it is important individuals do independent research to ensure the advice given is safe or it could "prevent people from seeking proper medical help and create even more pressure". She further said that not everyone is comfortable using such technology or could afford it. Amazon promises that the data will be kept confidential and will not be used to build a profile on customers. A spokesman shared with The Times, "All data was encrypted and kept confidential. Customers are in control of their voice history and can review or delete recordings."
