Optimize enterprise Java applications to gain a competitive edge with Packt's new JBoss book

December 2010 | Open Source

JBoss AS 5 Performance Tuning is a new book from Packt that will help readers optimize the performance of their Java enterprise application server along with its components and hardware. Written by Francesco Marchioni, the book is a practical guide which not only looks into different aspects of performance tuning but also shows how to use them in the existing Java application.

JBoss AS is a free software/ open source Java EE based application server. An important distinction for this class of software is that it not only implements a server that runs on Java, but it actually implements the Java EE part of Java. Because it is Java based, the JBoss application server operates cross-platform: usable on any operating system that supports Java.

JBoss AS 5 Performance Tuning book will teach readers how to apply the correct tuning methodology and use the tuning tools that will help them monitor and address any performance issues. The book will help Java developers learn the installation and configuration of tuning instruments like VisualVM, JMeter, Eclipse TPTP Platform, and basic O/S tools. A chapter each has been dedicated to Persistence layer and JBoss Clustering service, two of the most crucial elements to configure correctly in order to run a fast application.

Further reading will help them improve the performance of the application by properly configuring the JVM heap and the garbage collector knobs, efficiently configure the JBoss System Thread Pool, the Connection Pool, and the Logging Service and tune the middleware services including EJB tuning and JMS tuning. Overall, it will give the reader a deeper understanding of the available options for the application and their effect on its performance.

Full of practical examples, the book is ideal for Java architects who design and configure Enterprise applications, Java developers wanting to probe deeper into the application server and its correct tuning and application testers wanting to learn ways of monitoring middleware performance with appropriate instruments. Written to version 5.1, the book also has information about the upcoming 6.0 release and how one can upgrade their existing applications.
