March 2013 | Open Source

Packt brings to you Getting Started with Lazarus IDE, a practical, hands-on guide providing step-by-step exercises, which will help readers take advantage of the power of Lazarus IDE and Free Pascal to develop software that can be created for cross-platform use. The print book comes in at over 116 pages and is competitively priced at $24.99, whilst the e-book and Kindle versions are available for $12.74.

About the author:
Roderick Person has been a programmer for one of the top ranked health systems in the United States for the last 14 years. He is experienced with developing applications in Delphi, Free Pascal, Python, SQL, and other languages and is also an advocate of leveraging open source applications in corporate environments.

Lazarus is a free cross-platform IDE which provides a Delphi-like development experience for Pascal and Object Pascal developers. Lazarus uses Free Pascal as its back-end compiler. Therefore Lazarus can, theoretically, be used to develop applications for all platforms supported by Free Pascal.

Getting started with Lazarus IDE not only allows readers to install Lazarus on various platforms such as Linux and Windows, along with creating new projects and onverting existing Delphi projects to Lazarus projects, but also learn the differences between Delphi’s Pascal syntax and Free Pascal’s Object Pascal using a real world example project.

This book starts with the basics of Lazarus IDE such as the menus, the Object Inspector, and the Source Code Editor, and gradually moves on to create new projects with Lazarus such as console applications, GUI applications, while documenting a Lazarus project using the LazDE tool and rebuilding Lazarus on the Windows platform with the usage of GTK 2 widget set.

Some of the chapters emphasized in this book are:

Chapter 1 : Installing and Configuring the Lazarus Development Environment
Chapter 2 : Getting to Know the Lazarus IDE – a Quick Tour
Chapter 3 : Creating a Hello World Program
Chapter 4 : Converting Delphi
Chapter 5 : Creating a Lazarus Component
Chapter 6 : The Lazarus Documentation Editor
Chapter 7 : Rebuilding Lazarus with a GTK2 Interface
