May 2010 | Content Management, e-Learning, Moodle, Open Source

Moodle 1.9 Extension Development is a new book from Packt that is aimed at helping Moodlers use the robust plug-in system to customize their website. Written by Jonathan Moore and Michael Churchward, this book will teach users everything about Moodle Programming and how to extend its functionality.

Moodle is a free web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites. It is designed to help educators create online courses with a focus on interaction and collaborative construction of content. Its open source license and modular design allows any developer to create additional modules and features.

The book will first guide the users about the basic architecture that Moodle uses to operate. It will also teach them how to create the initial plug-ins; a block, and later the Moodle plug-ins thereby gaining more and more knowledge of the core code functions in Moodle, before getting into the API and inner libraries. Finally, they will learn to incorporate Moodle along with other systems considering different methods.

Users will be able to customize Moodle reports by adding activities and grading components that helps maintain a student's progress report automatically. They will also learn to automate notifications for any updates in the courses. Integrating with third party systems and building Moodle filters will also be learnt from the book.

With clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of helpful screenshots, this book is ideal for technologists who are looking into expanding Moodle's function through programming. The book is out now and is available from Packt. For more information, please visit https://www.packtpub.com/moodle-1-9-extension-development/book.
