Windows Phone 7.5 Application Development with F#

Chapter 2. F# Windows Phone Project Overview

The previous chapter gave us a peek into Windows Phone as a Mobile Platform, F# as a language, and the prerequisites required for developing Windows Phone applications using F#. In this chapter, we will learn more about the three F# Windows Phone Application Project templates, which are required for developing the apps.

Windows Phone Project Templates for F#

In the previous chapter, we read about three project templates necessary for Windows Phone Application development with F#. They are:

  • F# and C# Windows Phone Application (Silverlight) Project Template

  • F# and C# Windows Phone List Application (Silverlight) Project Template

  • F# and C# Windows Phone Panorama Application (Silverlight) Project Template

Once you have downloaded and installed the prerequisite project templates, go to File | New Project in Visual Studio IDE. You should see a Project dialog box, which will show the Windows Phone Project Template for F#, as follows:

In the upcoming section, we will go over each project type, and understand how it works and what it contains in terms of project items. We will create projects of all the above listed types and take a closer look at each one of them.

F# and C# Windows Phone Application (Silverlight) Project Template

Open an instance of Visual Studio IDE. From the standard menu, select File | New Project....

Summary

In this chapter, we took a look at all the project templates available for Windows Phone Application development with F#. All three project templates had almost the same composition. Each template had the AppHost and App projects. AppHost is the Silverlight Application needed for the startup, and all the application logic and UI resides in App. We looked at three main examples for Windows Phone App, namely, Basic application, List application, and Panorama application.

In the next chapter, we will learn how to work with the Windows Phone controls. We will also learn to interact with most of the controls, that is, on click or selection changed, and so on.

Key benefits

  • Understand the Windows Phone application development environment and F# as a language
  • Discover how to work with Windows Phone controls using F#
  • Learn how to work with gestures, navigation, and data access

Description

Windows Phone is an OS which is also a platform in itself and provides an opportunity for application developers to build their apps and sell them on the Windows Phone Marketplace. Windows Phone is slowly catching up in the race with iOS and Android. Although well suited for scientific and mathematical calculations, the Windows Phone Platform provides an opportunity to program in F#. "Windows Phone 7.5 Application Development with F#"  focuses on making the user aware of Windows Phone App Development with the F# programming language in as short a time as possible. The book teaches you about the development environment, helps you understand the project structure, understand the controls, and ends with some of the cool features of the platform like sensors, launchers, and choosers. The book starts off with enabling the user with the right tools required to start developing. It focuses on getting the IDE ready, and project and item templates. By the end of the book the user will be familiarized with the different aspects of the platform itself. The transition from one chapter to another is short and focused so that you can get to the meat of the topic quickly.

Who is this book for?

This book is for those who want to find out more about Windows Phone and are familiar with functional programming languages, and in particular, F#. The book assumes that you know how to program using F# as a language. However, the book does take you through a brief introduction to Windows Phone as a platform and F# as a language.

What you will learn

  • Windows Phone application development with function language F#
  • Work with Windows Phone controls
  • Understand screen orientations in Windows Phone
  • Discover page navigation in Windows Phone
  • Get to grips with gesture events in Windows Phone
  • Explore data access and storage in Windows Phone

Let me first point out that this book doesn't give you any introduction to F#. You need to have at least basic knowledge of the language to follow the book along. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, it's just something to be aware of if you're going to buy the book.Having said that, there's nothing all that specific to F# in the book either. All the samples could just as easily be written in C# and it wouldn't make much difference. Actually only the first two chapters focus on F# specifics, introducing you to F# templates, where to get them and what they include. If you're thinking about developing a Windows Phone application in F# this is bound to save you save time. The remaining chapters give a thorough overview of all the main concepts in Windows Phone development, illustrating them with very basic samples. It doesn't address the design aspect at all, though, so you'll need to get that knowledge elsewhere. All in all the book does a pretty good job in delivering what it promises. Too bad it doesn't really get into the advantages of developing an application in F# instead of in other more mainstream languages like C#. I see that as a missed opportunity of making the book appealing to a broader audience considering giving F# a more serious look. As it is I could really recommend it only to seasoned F# developers not knowing C# that well or not wanting to use it, who want to learn the basics of development for Windows Phone.

The mobile phone arena is dominated by the duopoly of Apple and Android. Some of you will cheer this book on as an alternative platform of Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5. Unfortunately, the book is upfront about immediately telling you that code written with it will not be backwardly compatible with Windows Mobile. Microsoft decided to do a complete rewrite of its mobile offerings. One distinctive feature is the flat appearance of the icons. To me this seems a retrograde step. After all, the pseudo three dimensional nature of icons has been with us since the Apple Macintosh in 1984. It was deemed necessary because the screen is flat. So to make the buttons more visually obvious, the 3d simulation was done.Do you feel this way also? Or it is that I have been conditioned for 30 years to only look at icons one way.As for F#, the name derives of course from C#. It is also not obvious to me why Microsoft needs to promote another language. Why not put the supposed new features of F# into C#? Continue to enhance the latter as an alternative to java, perhaps. Given the way Microsoft has ruthlessly dropped products, like Windows Mobile, do not be too surprised if the future of F# is limited. Or maybe Microsoft will drop C# and migrate its users to F#?The book does not say that F# is relegated to mobile development. As you might expect, the IDE is quite clean and comprehensive. Microsoft is very competent about such matters.

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
