Sass and Compass Designer's Cookbook

Chapter 2. Debugging Your Code

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Using CSS source maps to debug your code
  • Editing and debugging your Sass code in a browser
  • Commenting your code in the SCSS syntax
  • Building style guides with tdcss.js
  • Building style guides with the Kalei Styleguide
  • Using the @debug, @warn, and @error directives
  • Playing on SassMeister

Introduction

Sass helps you to write better, reusable, and more readable CSS. When writing, you should check any syntax and solve errors found when compiling your code. Although your CSS is valid, the compiled CSS code should be tested on different devices and browsers.

In this chapter, you will be introduced to CSS source maps that will help you find the source files of origin for the style rules of a certain HTML element in your page. You will also learn how to edit your Sass code in a browser.

Good code also contains constructive comments that make your code clearer for others. Adding comments to your code is the topic of the third recipe of this chapter.

Automated testing, as required for Test-driven Development (TDD), can be done with tools, such as Wraith (https://github.com/BBC-News/wraith) and Huxley (https://github.com/facebook/huxley). As well as these tools, you can also use style guides. Style guides show you the visual effect of your CSS code. In the fourth and fifth recipes...

Using CSS source maps to debug your code

Most Sass projects merge and compile code from multiple source files into a single CSS file. This CSS file has also been minified in most cases. When you are inspecting the source of CSS files with the developer tools of your browser, you cannot relate the style effects to your original Sass code. CSS source maps solve this problem by mapping the combined/minified file back to its unbuilt state.

Getting ready

This recipe requires only the Ruby Sass compiler to be installed. Read the Installing Sass for command line usage recipe of Chapter 1, Getting Started with Sass, to find out how to install the Ruby Sass compiler. Use a command-line editor, such as VIM, to edit your Sass files. Refer to the Writing our code in a text editor recipe of Chapter 1, Getting Started with Sass, to read more about editing your Sass files. Finally, you will need a modern browser with support for the source map protocol. Both Google Chrome and Firefox support source maps...

Editing and debugging your Sass code in a browser

When you directly edit your Sass code in a browser, you will immediately see the effects of your changes. To save your change, the browser should have access to your local file system. Browsers cannot access your file system by default. In this recipe, you will read about the steps required to edit in a browser and save your files.

Getting ready

In this recipe, the Google Chrome browser has been used. Browser editing is also possible with the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Browser editing and debugging requires CSS source maps. CSS source maps are discussed in the next recipe of this chapter. You can repeat the steps in this recipe with any web page that uses CSS code built with Sass.

For this recipe, the Sass and HTML files from the Using CSS source maps to debug your code recipe are used again. These files are included in the download source code of this book. For a better understanding of the code used, it is recommended that you read the Using...

Commenting your code in the SCSS syntax

Commenting your code will help you and others to better understand the code. Comments can also be used by other tools. If you or someone else has to change your code, maybe after a long period since the code has been written, comments should make clear what a block of code does and why it has been added in the first place.

Getting ready

For this recipe, you will only have to install Ruby Sass. The Installing Sass for command line usage recipe of Chapter 1, Getting Started with Sass, explains how you can install Ruby Sass.

How to do it...

Perform the following step to find out the differences between the three types of comments supported by Sass:

  1. Create a Sass template called comments.scss. In this file, write down the SCSS code as follows:
    // start comments

    $author: 'Bass Jobsen';

    // scss-lint:disable Comment
    /*!
    * Copyright 2015 #{$author}
    */

    // scss-lint:disable PropertySpelling
    //compilles into invalid CSS
    .code {
      author: $author;
    }
    ...

Building style guides with tdcss.js

In TDD, tests are written to test functional blocks of code and match the specification. After this, you write the code that makes test pass.

When applying test-driven CSS, the style guide is your test. After making changes in your Sass code, all the user interface elements in your style guide should still look as required.

Jakob Løkke Madsen (@jakobloekke) promotes test-driven development for CSS code. Madsen wrote the tdcss.js framework, which is a super simple style guide tool. The tdcss.js framework only depends on jQuery, and it is especially well-suited for adopting a test-driven approach to CSS styling. You can also use the tdcss.js framework to build a regular online style guide.

Getting ready

Download the tdcss.js file at https://github.com/jakobloekke/tdcss.js/archive/master.zip. Unzip this file in your working directory, which will create a folder called tdcss.js-master. Rename the tdcss.js-master folder to match the directory structure used...

Building style guides with the Kalei Styleguide

Style guide shows you the visual effect of your CSS code. When integrating a style guide into your Sass workflow, you can easily check whether your changes have had the desired effect or, on the other hand, do not break your design. In this recipe, you will be introduced to the Kalei Styleguide tool.

Getting ready

Install Ruby Sass, as described in the Installing Sass for command line usage recipe of Chapter 1, Getting started with Sass, to compile your SCSS code into CSS code. The Kalei Styleguide tool used in this recipe can be downloaded at https://github.com/thomasdavis/kaleistyleguide/archive/gh-pages.zip. You should download and unzip this file into your current working directory.

The Kalei Styleguide tool requires an up and running web server, so you should serve the code for this recipe on an HTTP server. Setting up a web server for your projects is out of the scope of this book. In this recipe, WEBrick has been used to server the files...

Darshana Ghodke Distribution Executive from Packt Publishing asked me to review this book.Normally I'm not a great fan of technical Cookbooks, because most of the time they miss just what you are looking for or are not easy in finding/showing wanted information. Bass Jobsen clearly took an other approach and created a well structured, logic and easy to read book. As a Bootstrap-3 developer I work with LESS, but the latest Bootstrap-4 is using SASS. The most important steps to get you going with Bootstrap-4 and SASS are punctual described. Don't expect to find every little detail about Sass and Compass, but after reading this book your ready to work with it and discover more details during future designing no matter if it is in Bootstrap, Foundation, Susy, Bourbon, Ruby on Rails, Ionic and with the help of Grunt.

This is the first Packt's Cookbook that I read and I must say that I really like how they structured the book: Getting ready, How to do it, How it works, There's more, and See also. This structure makes it easy to learn and also to use the book as reference.This book is suitable for beginners to learn about Sass and Compass as well as for intermediate readers. The author did a good job to make it easy to read and learn. He included various topics about Sass and Compass such as variables, mixins, functions, nested selector and modular CSS, building layout, Foundation and Bootstrap, Bourbon family, mobile apps (ionic framework), etc. There is even a related topic about WordPress although I think it is better if the author included more topic about it.In short, I think beginners should have this book as their first book if they want to learn Sass and Compass.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
