Procreate for Digital Artists

Learning how to draw a fence

A fence is a fun way to add charm to our background scenery. It also can add depth to our background scenery by drawing the fence bigger at the nearest point and smaller at the farthest. Maintaining consistency in spacing between the fence posts is one of the crucial things when drawing a fence, which can be done using Procreate’s 2D Grid found at Drawing Guides | 2D Grid. Drawing them in uneven shapes or forms can create an eerie or abandoned atmosphere. One challenge that we face in drawing fences is capturing the wooden texture. The number of details we need to draw for wooden texture can be difficult if we are unfamiliar with it. In this walkthrough, I will share a step-by-step process to help you draw fences easily.

Before moving on to the step-by-step process, please refer to Figure 2.7 as guidance to follow the walkthrough effectively.

Learning how to draw little houses

Drawing houses is the easiest method to create a cozy and welcoming background scenery. By drawing houses, we can create a storyline, and when the viewer sees it, they can imagine that someone may have once lived in that house or a family is living there. This will create an emotional response from viewers, and they can connect with the art. A house often represents security and comfort; thus, this will help viewers feel a sense of safety after looking at it. Drawing small houses can help to create depth in the background illustration, too, by varying the house sizes. We are sometimes afraid of drawing houses due to the number of details they have. There is no right way to draw a house in art; you can draw the house however you prefer. In this walkthrough, I will help you draw a house in the easiest way, and you will no longer have to worry about drawing complex details on houses.

Learning how to draw a green field

A green field provides a natural and calm setting, making the overall scene more pleasing to look at. The color green is often associated with calmness, tranquility, and nature. Including a green field in the background can help convey a specific mood or atmosphere in the artwork and can add depth and perspective to the drawing. It helps to create a sense of distance and space, making the scene look more natural. Other than that, green fields can enhance the visual aesthetic of the background scenery by adding various elements such as grass, flowers, and small houses. Due to the limited shapes that can be drawn in the background scenery, we always worry that we might draw it looking too plain and boring. In this walkthrough, I will share and create my method to make a green field look nice and interesting.

Learning how to draw a lake

A lake often evokes a sense of calm and tranquility. Including elements such as a still lake or a gently flowing stream can create a peaceful and serene atmosphere in the background scenery. On the other hand, drawing water in motion such as a waterfall, waves crashing against the shore or a gushing river can add a sense of movement and energy to the background scenery. The reflected objects or things that appear on the water reflection can add charm and draw viewers to look at them. Drawing water can be challenging, especially capturing the movement of the water and knowing which colors to use for water scenery such as lakes, seas, and so on. In this walkthrough, we will learn how to add a lake to the scenery such that it looks natural and serene.

Learning how to draw snow

Snowy scenery conveys a sense of quiet and solitude, but it is often associated with winter and the holiday season as well. Adding snow to an artwork can evoke seasonal and festive feelings, making the piece feel cozy and significantly influencing the atmosphere of the piece. It depends on what emotions you would like to express through your illustration. Due to the limited color scheme that we get to see in a snowy environment, it can be challenging to find the right color to use. The problems will arise when we add shadow, and we are unsure what color shadow we should use to prevent it from looking plain and empty. In this walkthrough, we will learn how we can draw a serene view of a snowy season.

Learning how to draw gravel

Capturing the intricate textures and details of rocks and dirt can be difficult. Each rock has unique cracks, lines, and surfaces that need to be represented accurately while dirt has smaller details that you need to draw to make it look realistic. To ensure that both are represented correctly, we need to add depth and perspective. When drawing background scenery, we tend to avoid paying attention to rocks and dirt. However, if we understand how to draw them, we can create better ground scenery. Remember not to add too many rocks as it will lead to creating a whole new scene and changing the aesthetics of the gravel background. Sometimes it can overshadow the main subject in a drawing, thus making people move past your art very quickly as they are unable to focus on one thing.
