Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 Cookbook

Chapter 2. Installation and Upgrade

In this chapter, we will cover the installation and upgrade for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2. We will also understand the prerequisites to start your upgrade process.

You will learn how to:

  • Install a SQL Server locally on the DPM server
  • Prepare a remote SQL Server for DPMDB
  • Install SCDPM 2012 R2
  • Install SCDPM 2012 R2 using a remote SQL Server or cluster
  • Install SCDPM 2012 R2 in optional scenarios
  • Understand the supported upgrade scenarios

Introduction

The final result of an installation will never be better than the dependent application design and implementation. A common mistake discovered frequently is the misconfiguration of the SQL configurations that the System Center applications depend on. If you provide System Center a poorly configured SQL Server or insufficient resources, you will end up with quite a bad installation of the application that could be part of the services you would like to provision within your modern data center. In the end, a System Center application can never work faster than what the underlying dependent architecture or technology allows.

By proper planning and decent design, you can also provide a scalable scenario for your installation that will make your System Center application applicable for future scenarios.

One important note regarding the upgrade scenario for the System Center Data Protection Manager software is the fact that there is no rollback feature built in. If your upgrade fails...

Installing a SQL Server locally on the DPM server

This recipe will cover the installation process of a local SQL Server that is collocated with the DPM server on the same operating system.

Getting ready

SQL Server is a core component for System Center Data Protection Manager. It is of major importance that the installation and design of SQL Server is well planned and implemented. If you have an undersized installation of SQL Server, it will provide you with a negative experience while operating the System Center Data Protection Manager.

Note

Before continuing the installation of SQL, please read the Planning DPM pre-installation tasks recipe in Chapter 1, Pre-installation Tasks.

How to do it…

Make sure that your operating system is fully patched and rebooted before you start the installation of SQL Server 2012 and that the DPM Admins group is a member of the local administrators group. Now take the following steps:

Insert the SQL server media and start the SQL server setup. In the SQL Server...

Preparing a remote SQL Server for DPMDB

This recipe will cover the procedure to prepare a remote SQL server for hosting the DPMDB.

Getting ready

In the scenario where you build a large hosted DPM service solution delivering BaaS (Backup as a Service), RaaS (Restore as a Service), or DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service) within your modern data center, you may want to use a dedicated backend SQL server that is either a standalone SQL server or a clustered one, for high availability.

Note

It is not advisable to use SQL Server Always-On to host the DPMDB.

Regardless of whether you put the DPMDB on a cluster or a backend standalone SQL server, you still need to perform some initial configurations prior to the actual DPM server installation.

How to do it…

After installing your backend SQL server solution you must prepare it for hosting the DPMDB.

Insert the DPM2012R2 media and run the setup. In the setup screen, click on the DPM Remote SQL Prep link.

How to do it…

The installation wizard will start and install...

Installing SCDPM 2012 R2

This recipe will cover the installation process for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2.

Getting ready

Before you start installing System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, it is recommended that you read the Planning your DPM pre-installation tasks and Planning the DPM disk pool recipes in Chapter 1, Pre-installation Tasks regarding DPM prerequisites and SQL server planning and design.

How to do it…

Insert the DPM 2012 R2 media and start the setup for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2. When the installation list is presented click on Data Protection Manager to start the installation.

How to do it…

The installation wizard starts and prompts you with the Microsoft Software License Terms. Accept the license terms by checking the checkbox I accept the license terms and conditions to continue the installation.

The installation wizard will now prompt you with eight different installation steps. Currently you are on the Welcome step. To continue the installation...

Installing SCDPM 2012 R2 using a remote SQL server or cluster

This recipe will cover the installation of DPM 2012 R2 using a remote SQL server or cluster.

Getting ready

  • This recipe will cover and explain the configuration needed to complete a DPM 2012 R2 installation when you are using a backend, standalone server or a SQL cluster for achieving a high-availability scenario.

Note

It is not advisable to use SQL Server Always-On to host the DPMDB.

Before you can start your DPM sever installation you need to configure the SQL server to be able to host the DPMDB.

The only difference in the installation wizard when you install the DPM server software is the Prerequisites check step.

How to do it…

This recipe assumes that you have your SQL server installed and that correct configurations have been made according to the recipes in this book.

Regardless of whether the DPMDB is placed on a SQL cluster or a standalone SQL server, you must install the DPM 2012 R2 Support Files on the SQL server node...

Understanding the supported upgrade scenarios

This section will cover the supported upgrade scenarios that also apply to installing DPM rollup updates on the DPM server.

As a DPM administrator, one of the most important maintenance tasks is to apply update rollups, service packs, and also upgrade to the latest version.

There are some considerations that you should think of before you apply any update rollups, service packs, or upgrade to the latest version of the DPM software:

  • Back up your DPMDB
  • Solve any inconsistencies and alerts in the console
  • Have a recovery plan

When you apply update rollups, service packs, or upgrade to the latest version of the DPM software, the installation will update both files and in some cases the DPMDB. Since there is currently no roll back function for the DPM software updates, it is very important that you understand the importance of having your configurations backed up in case of data corruption or hardware failure and so on.

You can backup your DPMDB using a...

I purchased this book to learn how the System Center Data Protection Manager works. Then, I followed the instructions of the book along with some Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and setup a test environment without any issues. After a few more testing, we are planning to implement SCDPM as our data protection solution over this summer. The book explains the DPM setup process in delicious recipes and the author Robert Hedblom has done a great job covering all the important ingredients of the topic. It would have made a better "Cookbook" if there were some troubleshooting "recipes" at the end of the book. Hopefully, the author will add this in the next revision.I enjoyed the DPM recipes. Keep cooking.

All you need to know for working with the Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 you will find in this book. It starts with explanation of some basics about the software and the infrastructure and explains different methods of the installation. After that you can find how to backup and restore all kind of Microsoft servers like file server, exchange server, sql server and others. Additionally you can read more about chaining two and more Data Protection Manager servers, backup and restore data to and from the azure cloud and much more. The step by step style of the book with screenshots is great and the very useful links for more information.I worked for some years with the DPM 2010 version and the book was very helpful for updating and implementing new features especially with Microsoft Exchange 2013 and Microsoft Hyper-V Failover Cluster Server 2012 R2.

I bought this books along with other System Center books as i am planning to implement this solution with one of my public sector clients. Currently going through building my test environment by following the tips and tricks provided in this book along with some interesting recipes. So far book has been helpful as the format and layout and the way information has been presented is brilliant.Currently business is using Simpana backup software which has seen good days hopefully with help of this book MS is in the door on the backup and restore solution and Simpana is out. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to either learn the product from scratch or someone who simply wants to brush up on previous skills, best book in the market.

Robert Hedblom does a great job explaining basic and advanced topics regarding Data Protection Manager 2012 R2! What I personally like about the 'Cookbook' style of the book is that every section starts with a description of the topic, followed by step-by-step instructions so you can follow along at home on your testlab. This hands-on experience is invaluable for DPM admins like myself! Following every step-by-step instruction there is a detailed explanation of the topic and additional information. Great book!
