MCTS: Microsoft Silverlight 4 Development (70-506) Certification Guide

Chapter 2. Laying out Our User Interface

We will continue our journey to become a Silverlight guru by covering the different aspects of laying out a user interface in Silverlight. In this chapter we will get some hands-on experience of laying out, displaying, and creating different controls. We have a lot to cover, so let's get going and write some code!

In this chapter we will cover the following topics:

  • Arranging content with panels

  • Using core and content controls

  • Creating user controls

  • The navigation framework

  • Displaying a collection of items

  • Playing media files

  • Test your knowledge

Arranging content with panels

Imagine the following scenario:

You are responsible for building your company's new BI dashboard. You get the requirements from your superior, and you notice one of the requirements is that your application must support all of the different screen resolutions in the office. This is exactly the point of knowing the different panels that Silverlight offers and how they come into play. Silverlight...

Silverlight, being a rich UI framework, offers six different kinds of layout panels for different causes, and as nothing beats seeing things for yourself, we will now create our first Silverlight application to see how the panels differentiate from one another.

Creating your first Silverlight...

Using core and content controls

Silverlight's control library is constantly growing. Some controls are living in the assemblies and included in the Silverlight plugin install by default. These controls are usually referred to as the core controls. These core controls include all-time favorites such as TextBox, Button, CheckBox, and so on. But the power of Silverlight doesn't come from its core components alone; you can always reference other assemblies that have other controls living in them and add them to your project. When you add such "outside" control to your page, you need to reference its namespace in your page.

Using core controls

Among Silverlight's core controls, there are controls we already know (and love) from other frameworks. Let's discuss the usage and properties of those controls. What is the first control that comes to your mind when you're thinking about text input? Most developers will answer—the TextBox control.

TextBox

The well-known TextBox control has one purpose;...

Creating user controls

Silverlight, being a rich UI framework, provides us with many controls ready to be used out of the box. But, no matter how rich the toolbox may be, there will come a time when you wish to create your own controls. Creating your own controls in Silverlight can be done by creating either a user control or a custom control. As creating the user controls is easier than creating the custom controls, we will introduce this method first.

A user control, in its core, is nothing more than a combination of existing controls that can be reused throughout your application. Once we learn about dependency properties later on in the book, we'll see how user controls can be extended with data binding and templating.

Creating your first user control

To walk you through creating your first user control, we will create a simple control that combines a TextBlock control and a Button control. Each time the button is clicked, the TextBlock control's text will indicate the number of clicks...

The navigation framework

The navigation framework was first introduced in Silverlight 3. This framework is based on the concept of having a frame that displays pages and takes care of the whole navigating process from one page to another. The navigation framework supports many of the modern concepts of navigation, such as back and forward navigation, journal histories, and deep linking. The easiest way to create an application that uses the navigation framework is to select the Silverlight Navigation Application template while creating a new Silverlight project. Go ahead and create a new Silverlight project with the Silverlight Navigation Application template and name it Chapter2-Navigation.

As you look at the solution explorer, you may notice that the structure of this application is different from the one we are used to. It has a Views directory, which holds several XAML files, and the MainPage.xaml file already has some code inside of it. In a navigation application, the MainPage.xaml...

Displaying a collection of items

Displaying a collection of items can be considered as one of the highlights of using Silverlight. Silverlight contains many controls whose purpose is to display a list of items ranging from simple listboxes to a datagrid, which can be used to display an Excel-like representation of data. One of the most important aspects of displaying a collection of items is templating. With templating, we can change the way our items will render. The items of a collection can be either bound to the control or added manually through XAML or code. We will discuss the concept of binding later in this book, so don't be discouraged if you don't understand what it means right now. It's time to start exploring the items controls of Silverlight, and so we start with the ItemsControl control.

ItemsControl

ItemsControl is the base class for the ListBox, ComboBox, and TabControl controls. Other than the usual properties, you might expect to find in a regular control that the ItemsControl...

Playing media files

The final subject we will discuss in this chapter is the media capabilities of Silverlight. As it was first introduced, Silverlight was always a media-focused framework. Silverlight has the ability to play audio and video files (HD content), stream media, and use Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect the displayed media. The heart of all of these is the MediaElement control.

The MediaElement control

The MediaElement control is a rectangular control that can contain audio or video as its content. Silverlight supports many codes for audio and video and a full list of supported codecs can be found on the MSDN website—http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc189080%28v=vs.95%29.aspx.

Using the MediaElement control is quite straightforward. Create a new Silverlight project in Visual Studio and name it Chapter2-Media. Copy a video file to your web project ClientBin directory (you can find a few in Windows 7 operating system's Sample Videos folder), and copy the following...

Test your knowledge

  1. 1. You are tasked to develop a Silverlight 4 based application. The application contains the following code snippet:

    <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White">
    <Grid.RowDefinitions>
    <RowDefinition Height="200"/>
    <RowDefinition Height="*"/>
    </Grid.RowDefinitions>
    </Grid>

    You need to add a horizontally oriented StackPanel control into the second row. Which XAML fragment should you use?

    a.<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Row="1"></StackPanel>

    b.<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Grid.Row="1"></StackPanel>

    c.<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Grid.Row="2"></StackPanel>

    d.<StackPanel Orientation="Vertical" Grid.Row="1"></StackPanel>

  2. 2. You are developing a Silverlight-based media player application. You need to add a MediaElement control that is able to handle an event when a media starts playing and when it fails. Which XAML fragment should you use?

    a.<MediaElement x:Name="MyMediaElement...

Summary

This has been a long ride, hasn't it? We have covered a lot of ground in this chapter. We started with creating our first Silverlight application, and by using it, we learned all about the layout panels and what each and everyone of them is used for. Then we moved on to using the core and content controls, a topic which has a fair amount of questions in the Silverlight certification exam. The next subject we discussed was the navigation framework. We learned how to navigate between pages, use query strings and other related subjects, without which no line of business application can be completed. We then moved on to displaying a collections of items—a set of controls aimed at helping us display a large amount of data while using binding, templating, and more. We concluded the chapter with the ever fun MediaElement control—the heart and soul of working with media in Silverlight.

In the next chapter, we are going to extend our knowledge of the Silverlight UI. We will work with animation...

Great book for those who still wish to pass the MCTS exam for Silverlight. The book provides many tutorials for the subjects in discussion, which comes to mind when you hit a question in the exam about the exact same subject.

Simply said, it covers the material on the exam. I've worked through self-paced training kit books where the exam throws me stuff I've never seen before, but this book covered the material and I passed. I hope Packt Publishing puts out more Visual Studio certification guides.

I have read a few SL books now, with each focused on detail I needed in depth knowledge on. Silverlight with WCF, Silverlight with RIA Services, SL for SharePoint, etc. Those books were great for the in depth detail I needed, but they are not designed to help me pass the cert exam.This book has just enough detail in each area, with a call out to great sources of detail in specific areas if you require, or want the expanded knowledge. This worked extremely well for me as I have basic knowledge of SL and have produced several relatively simple apps with data grids and RIA services, but I needed to learn some of the basics if I am going to take the cert exam and so I got this book with that intent.

First let me start by saying i just loved the book.As a sharepoint specialist and someone who's work is based around giving the best support to both customers and our development team i found this very interesting, detailed and helpful.The material in the book is presented in an easy to follow tutorial way.In this intuitive way johnny Torgeman explains the subject of silverlight 4 development from A to Z.i have bought the book and after this i am already waiting for johnney's next book.

Personally I haven't done the certification, so I won't be able to say if it is sufficient or not, but I would imagine that the certification itself has been used as a guide for what is needed.Silverlight 4 is a pretty large subject on its own, and quite ambitious to cover in just one book and at the same time provide guidance towards a certification. I feel that this book really accomplished this in a good manner, it is straight to the point but at the same time not leaving out any explanations. I even picked up some basic knowledge I was not aware of myself.Being a guidance for certification, it does just that, so its not going to go outside of that promise. Which probably makes it feel a little light-weight on real world scenarios and it stays true to the original Microsoft messaging. It mentioned MVVM to some extent, but it could probably have dove into that subject a bit more, in my opinion. But I totally understand why it is not brought up. Being very focused on code quality, testability and such I feel that it is important to get this message straight, even though it might not be 100% relevant to a certification.All in all I found the book to be as close to a page turner as these kind of books can be, I learned some basics myself and brushed up on my own knowledge of Silverlight while reading it. And I'm pretty confident it will serve as a good guide for a developer wanting to certify him/her-self as a Silverlight developer.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
