Chapter 4. Statistical and Information Visualization

The word information can be used to define a broad range of knowledge and knowledge-based inference. In the context of our book, information visualization refers to the techniques of visualizing different kinds of dataset that we have introduced in Chapter 1, Visualization as a Tool to Understand Data. Even though time series and scientific data are also information, we have separated the previous chapter from the current one in order to respect the current categorization of research in the visualization community. Scientific visualization practitioners tend to deal with datasets that arise specifically in the context of scientific experiments or simulations, whereas information visualization practitioners have traditionally focused their research on other kinds of widely used data, such as text, graph networks, statistical plots, maps, and so on.
