Key benefits

  • Create modern Windows 10 applications and gain access to UI controls that were previously limited to UWP applications
  • Discover how to modernize your existing Win32 apps with a modern Windows 10 UI
  • Learn to embed a single page application (SPA) in a WinUI application with a web framework like Blazor

Description

WinUI 3.0 takes a whole new approach to delivering Windows UI components and controls, and is able to deliver the same features on more than one version of Windows 10. Learn WinUI 3.0 is a comprehensive introduction to WinUI and Windows apps for anyone who is new to WinUI, Universal Windows Platform (UWP), and XAML applications. The book begins by helping you get to grips with the latest features in WinUI and shows you how XAML is used in UI development. You'll then set up a new Visual Studio environment and learn how to create a new UWP project. Next, you'll find out how to incorporate the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern in a WinUI project and develop unit tests for ViewModel commands. Moving on, you'll cover the Windows Template Studio (WTS) new project wizard and WinUI libraries in a step-by-step way. As you advance, you'll discover how to leverage the Fluent Design system to create beautiful WinUI applications. You'll also explore the contents and capabilities of the Windows Community Toolkit and learn to create a new UWP user control. Toward the end, the book will teach you how to build, debug, unit test, deploy, and monitor apps in production. By the end of this book, you'll have learned how to build WinUI applications from scratch and modernize existing WPF and WinForms applications using WinUI controls.

If you are familiar with UWP and WPF and are looking to enhance your knowledge of Windows development and modernize existing apps, you will find this book useful. In a past life I was a Windows desktop development specialist, loving WPF development. Since then I've not followed the Windows Desktop scene as closely, but Alvin's book brings me back. The second edition of WinUI 3 does a great job of giving an overview of WinUI development by building a sample app and discussing controls, data binding, MVVM, dependency injection, styling, and deployment of said application. It even ventures into unexpected territory with discussions on using UNO to make cross-platform apps using XAML and using WinUI to host Blazor user experiences. Bottom line: I found something useful in every chapter and it made me dream of developing for Windows once more.

Learn WinUI 3 is an excellent guide for developers targeting Windows applications, and in the 2nd Edition, other platforms as well! The original book has been completely updated, and several brand-new chapters have been added. My favorite new chapter, "Take Your App Cross-Platformwith Uno Platform", shows step-by-step how to build not only Windows apps but also how to use and test mostly the same code for Android and WebAssembly using Uno Platform, a popular open-source platform for cross-platform development.WinUI technology has been maturing, and Learn WinUI 3 2nd Edition does a nice job of reflecting the positive changes in WinUI. Definitely recommended!

Although the title to this book falls foul of Microsoft deciding to refer to the framework as "WinUI 3" instead of including a version number (i.e. "WinUI 3.0"), the information is still very relevant. In addition, WinUI 3 has now shipped within Project Reunion 0.5 with production support for desktop apps - WinUI 3 on UWP remains in preview only.Overall, this book provides a great introduction into WinUI 3 and walks the reader through the construction and deployment of a WinUI 3 application. The first section introduces WinUI and its place as the latest UI framework for Windows developers. From there, the reader is guided through an approach to building an app from scratch. As well as discussing Win UI 3, various architectural practices such as the use of MVVM, Dependency Injection and services are also covered. Unit Testing is briefly mentioned, but not covered in any depth. If you are new to Windows Development, this section will get you comfortable with building simple applications. The second section introduces the Fluent Design System, building WinUI 3 desktop apps (which is now available with production support due to the release of Project Reunion 0.5), introduces the Windows Community Toolkit and then demonstrates how WinUI 3 XAML Islands can be used to incorporate modern UI elements in legacy applications built with Windows Forms or WPF. In terms of Fluent Design coverage, there is enough to get the reader started, with links to Microsoft's comprehensive documentation for further learning. The final section discusses approaches for debugging WinUI 3 applications, and working around limitations in the support for WinUI 3 in Visual Studio. For me, the chapter on hosting a Blazor Application within the WinUI 3 WebView2 seemed out of place. However, the chapters discussing Visual Studio App Center, and Packaging and Deploying are great additions.Overall, if you are new to Windows Development, or looking how to shift over to using WinUI 3, this a great book to start with.
