In this recipe, we will delve into the exciting world of image analysis. This is an area where AI has traditionally excelled, and it is now being applied with great success to biological imaging and analysis.
You have probably heard of machine learning being applied to recognize images of cats and have almost certainly heard about self-driving cars. Image recognition was one of the first big areas for AI, along with speech generation and recognition. These same tools are applied to image analysis of cells to determine their biological features.
Image analysis is useful in many areas of biology in its own right, including digital pathology to look at cancerous tissues, or imaging many individual cells in flow cytometry. We’ll touch on those applications later in this recipe.
