C# 7.1 and .NET Core 2.0 ??? Modern Cross-Platform Development

Part 1, C# 7.1

This part of the book is about the C# language—the grammar and vocabulary that you will use every day to write the source code for your applications.

Programming languages have many similarities to human languages, except that in programming languages, we can make up our own words, just like Dr. Seuss!

In a book written by Dr. Seuss in 1950, If I Ran the Zoo, he states this:

And then, just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-Troo And Bring Back an It-Kutch a Preep and a Proo A Nerkle, a Nerd and a Seersucker, too!

This book covers C# 7.1. Microsoft has plans for future versions of C#, as shown in the following table:

Version Features
C# 7.2 ref readonly, blittable, strongname, interior pointer, nontrailing named arguments, private protected, Digit separator after base specifier
C# 7.3
Range with double-dot operator, for example, 1..10
C# 8.0 Default...

Description

C# 7.1 and .NET Core 2.0 – Modern Cross-Platform Development, Third Edition, is a practical guide to creating powerful cross-platform applications with C# 7.1 and .NET Core 2.0. It gives readers of any experience level a solid foundation in C# and .NET. The first part of the book runs you through the basics of C#, as well as debugging functions and object-oriented programming, before taking a quick tour through the latest features of C# 7.1 such as default literals, tuples, inferred tuple names, pattern matching, out variables, and more. After quickly taking you through C# and how .NET works, this book dives into the .NET Standard 2.0 class libraries, covering topics such as packaging and deploying your own libraries, and using common libraries for working with collections, performance, monitoring, serialization, files, databases, and encryption. The final section of the book demonstrates the major types of application that you can build and deploy cross-device and cross-platform. In this section, you'll learn about websites, web applications, web services, Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, and mobile apps. By the end of the book, you'll be armed with all the knowledge you need to build modern, cross-platform applications using C# and .NET.

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted towards readers who have some prior programming experience or have a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) background, and want to gain a solid foundation with C# and to be introduced to the types of applications they could build and will work cross-platform on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

This is the best book I've read so far that covers the changes introduced in C# v7 and the introduction of .NET Standard and .Net Core 2.0. There are many good code samples which are used to teach you not only the incremental changes in C# and .NET, but the whole of the language as it exists today along with a thorough grounding in all the main technologies used in programming with C# and using Visual Studio 2017.Time is not wasted on the redundant and superseded parts of C# or .NET. I've read through and understood all the chapters and got everything to work apart from the very last chapter which involves programming an iOS device such as the Apple iPhone using C# and .NET Core and using Visual Studio 2017 for the MacOS. The Book introduces you to Visual Studio 2017 for Mac in the very first chapter (as well as using Visual Studio 2017 on a Windows 10 machine). For coders using a Mac, every code example comes along with appropriate instructions for using Visual Studio Code (on Mac) in parallel with the instruction for entering the code using Visual Studio 2017 for Windows. In fact with the latest version of Visual Studio for Mac you can code the examples using it instead of Visual Studio Code (which is a little primitive compared with the full IDE on the main Visual Studio for Mac. There are a few misprints or errors which did not sorted by the time of publication, but these have all been reported and should be corrected by published errata, or in the 4th edition which is due to appear soon. Bear in mind that C# and .NET is rapidly evolving as it migrates to being a platform for many different Operating Systems

Being experienced with Windows development with C#, I wanted to understand what I can achieve with NET Core 2 and how to write code on and for different operating systems. I was lucky to discover and read this book. Mark J. Price covers a wide range of topics from C# keywords to Entity Framework, ASP.NET Core and cross-platform development. And he does so masterfully, explaining concepts clearly and providing many examples and hands-on instructions. I thought I knew C# quite well, but gained new insights (e.g. ToInt32() bankers rounding, if/switch pattern matching). The book does an excellent job at introducing essential APIs and core frameworks. I found exactly the guidance and orientation I was looking for.

This is a big book dripping with all the raw facts that programmers need to know. It doesent have gimics and colors that destract you from the information you need to be successful. Almost as important this book explains the complexies of visual studios and its features instead of just telling you to run through a list of steps without telling you why. Im almost dont with my third pass through this book trying to get all this information to stick in my head and im already helping experienced programmers diagnose problems and come up with solutions to a language ive known for less that 2 months. This book is going to be my “no bs” referance to c# and VS-2017 for the rest of my life or until the next version!
