Generating documentation
As engineers, we don't like manual labor. This is why, if something can be automated and save us work, it most likely will be. With all this effort to create good enough documentation, having the possibility to automate at least parts of the work can be bliss.
Generating requirements documentation
If you're creating a project from scratch, it can be hard to generate documentation out of thin air. However, sometimes it's possible to generate documentation if you have the requirements captured in an appropriate tool. If you're using JIRA, for instance, a starting point would be to just export all items from an issue navigator view. You can use whatever filter you like and get printouts just for those items.
