Hi ,
Welcome to another week of MobilePro; this is edition no. 189. Apple had its annual September launch event yesterday and while most of the revelations surrounded new iPhones (Do you like the iPhone Air? I personally find it too thin. Will it stay intact in one hand?) or Apple Watches. However, there were also interesting tidbits for mobile devs hidden in there. Mainly, iOS 26 is out soon, on Monday, September 15; that’s just 5 days away. My head has been turned enough by the new Liquid Glass update to be excited by it, especially after the slight changes Apple has made to it in further betas. iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe will go live the same day as well.
That’s not all though. One thing that the new range of iPhones, the iPhone 17 line, will be good at is offering upgraded security to memory safety. Apple says the new phones come with Memory Integrity Enforcement, meant to protect your phone’s memory from spyware, such as the notable Pegasus. We’re never going to say no to enhanced security, so this is nice to know, what with U.S. State Department employees being targeted by such spyware a few years ago.
One last thing before we move to other news: Apple was quiet on mentions of AI, compared to the rather boastful tone taken at the same event in 2024. We recently covered how that move resulted in Apple executives falling flat on their faces after they could not deliver those front-facing AI upgrades in time. In fact, Apple continues to be slower on that front, with recent news suggesting that it would look at partnering with Anthropic, OpenAI, or even its biggest competitor, Google, to bring AI to its devices. How long that takes is anyone’s guess! And it seems like the iPhone 17 range will not, hence, be as different from its predecessors on that front.
That’s not all the news this week. Let’s dive in.
