Testing a HELP System in a Java Application

Introduction {literal}As more and more features get added to your software, the Help system for the software becomes extensive. It could probably contains hundreds of HTML files plus a similar number of images. We could always face the problems listed below. There could be broken links in the help index. Some files may not be listed in the index, therefore they can not be read by the customers. Some of the contextual help buttons could show the wrong topic. Some of the HTML files can contain broken links or incorrect image tags. Not all of the file titles would match their index entry. Another problem could occur when the user does a free text search of the help system. The result of such a search is a list of files, each represented by its title. In our system,  documents could have the title "untitled". In fact, the JavaHelp 2.0 System User's Guide contains the recommendation "To avoid confusion, ensure that the <TITLE> tag corresponds to the title used in the table of contents." Given that customers mostly use the Help system when they are already frustrated by our software, we should always see to it that such errors do not exist in our help system. To do this, we will write a tool, HelpGenerator, that generates some of the boilerplate XML in the help system and checks the HTML and index files for the problems listed above. We will also build tools for displaying and testing the contextual help. We've re-engineered and improved these tools and present them in this article. In this article we are assuming familiarity with the JavaHelp system. Documentation and sample code for JavaHelp can be found at: http://java.sun.com/products/javahelp. Overview A JavaHelp package consists of: A collection of HTML and image files containing the specific Help information to be displayed. A file defining the index of the Help topics. Each index item in the file consists of the text of the index entry and a string representing the target of the HTML file to be displayed for that index entry, for example: <index version="1.0"> <indexitem text="This is an example topic."target="Topic"> <indexitem text="This is an sub-topic."target="SubTopic"/> </indexitem></index> A file associating each target with its corresponding HTML file (or more generally, a URL)—the map file. Each map entry consists of the target name and the URL it is mapped to, for example: <map version="1.0"> <mapID target="Topic" url="Topic.html"/> <mapID target="SubTopic" url="SubTopic.html"/></map> A HelpSet file (by default HelpSet.hs) which specifies the names of the index and map files and the folder containing the search database. Our software will normally have a main menu item to activate the Help and, in addition, buttons or menu items on specific dialogs to activate a Help page for a particular topic, that is, "context-sensitive" Help. What Tests Do We Need?? At an overall structural level, we need to check: For each target referred to in the index file, is there a corresponding entry in the map file? In the previous example, the index file refers to targets called Topic and SubTopic. Are there entries for these targets in the map file? For each URL referred to in the map file, is that URL reachable? In the example above, do the files Topic.html and SubTopic.html exist? Are there HTML files in our help package which are never referred to? If a Help button or menu item on some dialog or window is activated, does the Help facility show the expected topic? If the Help search facility has been activated, do the expected search results show? That is, has the search database been built on the latest versions of our Help pages? At a lower level, we need to check the contents of each of the HTML files: Do the image tags in the files really point to images in our help system? Are there any broken links? Finally, we need to check that the contents of the files and the indexes are consistent Does the title of each help page match its index? To simplify these tests, we will follow a simple naming pattern as follows: We adopt the convention that the name of each HTML file should be in CamelCase format (conventional Java class name format) plus the .html extension. Also, we use this name, without the extension, as the target name. For example, the target named SubTopic will correspond to the file SubTopic.html. Furthermore, we assume that there is a single Java package containing all the required help files, namely, the HTML files, the image files, the index file, and the map file. Finally, we assume a fixed location for the Help search database. With this convention, we can now write a program that: Generates the list of available targets from the names of the HTML files. Checks that this list is consistent with the targets referred to in the index file. Checks that the index file is well-formed in that: It is a valid XML document. It has no blank index entries. It has no duplicate index entries. Each index entry refers to a unique target. Generates the map file, thereby guaranteeing that it will be consistent with the index file and the HTML files. The class HelpGenerator in the package jet.testtools.help does all this,and, if there are no inconsistencies found, it generates the map file. If an inconsistency or other error is found, an assertion will be raised. HelpGenerator also performs the consistency checks at the level of individual HTML files. Let's look at some examples. An HTML File That is Not Indexed Here is a simple help system with just three HTML files: The index file, HelpIndex.xml, only lists two of the HTML files: <index version="1.0"> <indexitem text="This is an example topic." target="ExampleTopic"> <indexitem text="This is an example sub-topic." target="ExampleSubTopic"/> </indexitem></index> When we run HelpGenerator over this system (we'll see how to do this later in this article), we get an assertion with the error messageThe Help file: TopicWithoutTarget.html was not referenced in the Index file: HelpIndex.xml.

What is SEO? Search-engine optimization, or SEO, refers to the process of preparing your website to be spidered, indexed, and ranked by the major search engines so that when Internet users search for your keywords, your website will appear on their results page. Proper search engine optimization is a crucial step to ensure success and should be undertaken with care and diligence. It should also be noted that SEO is an interdisciplinary concern, combining web design functions with marketing and promotional concerns. If aimed properly, SEO would be a powerful weapon in your arsenal. Proper SEO is: Optimizing META data Optimizing page titles Optimizing page content Selecting proper keywords Testing your optimizations Promoting link popularity Using standards-compliant HTML Optimizing image ALT tags Using a logical website structure Validating your content Proper SEO isn't: Keyword spamming Hidden text Cloaking content Link-farming Excessive content or site duplication Paying for questionable links Structural Optimization Optimizing your site's actual structure and presentation is the most immediate approach to SEO. Since these factors are under the immediate control of the webmaster, they represent a foundational approach to the SEO problem. Once you've optimized your site's structural components, you can optimize the promotional aspects of SEO, which we'll discuss momentarily. Items That Search Engines Look for in Your Site's Content It's important to remember that today's search engine rankings are determined by highly sophisticated algorithms. Trying to stay one step ahead of the major engines with bad tactics is not only a very bad idea, but also a waste of time. Well written content will win repeatedly. Giving the search engine robots a well prepared sitepage contributes in promoting your site. Three items that many search engine robots look for are: Relevant page titles to your content Relevant keywords and descriptions (META tags) Relevant, keyword-rich content, presented in clean and valid HTML Take a note of the recurring theme—"relevancy". If your site is relevant in terms of what the user is looking for, you will achieve respectable search engine rankings without any additional promotion. However, this is not a place to stop, as search engines correlate your site's standings among your peers and competitors by evaluating certain external factors. External Views of Your Site by Search Engines Search giant, Google, likes to describe its proprietary algorithm, known as PageRankTM, by discussing how the external factors can accurately define your site's relevancy, when considered along with your site's actual content. Most search engines today follow this formula in determining link popularity. Some popular items that are used to measure are: How many websites link to yours Where they link in your content What words are used in the actual link text (i.e. the description of the page) The topical relevancy of the sites that link to your site The power of web search lies in the search engine's ability to provide accurate and relevant results that someone can quickly use to find the information they seek. More importantly, the other end of the search process guarantees that the visitors we draw from search engines are truly after the information or services we provide. Another way to look at it would be it's the right message, but the wrong person. Thus we see that our interests, the interests of the search engines, and the interests of web surfers actually coincide! If we tune our content properly, and connect our content with similarly relevant content, we can expect to be rewarded with targeted traffic eager to devour our information and buy our services. If we try to deceive the search engines, or common people, we deceive ourselves. It's that simple. Optimizing META Data Metadata is the data about the data. It's the section where you define what a search engine should expect to find on your page. If you've never taken note of META tags before, then take a brief tour of the Web and view the source code of several websites. You'll see how this data is organized, primarily into descriptions and keyword listings. Joomla! provides functionality for modifying and dynamically generating META tags, in the Site | Global Configuration | Metadata dialog, as well as within individual articles via the META tab on the right-hand panel. This is where the dynamic aspect of metadata becomes important—your main page will have certain needs for proper META optimization and your individual Joomla! content articles will require special tuning to make the best of their potential. This is accomplished though key words and phrases scattered through out the text. Keep in mind that each search engine is different; however keeping ratio of about 3 to 1 for keywords and META (keyword) in the top 1/3rd of the page is a decent rule of thumb. Using the Site | Global Configuration | Metadata dialog, is pretty straight forward.You can enter descriptions, keywords and key phrases that are pertinent to your siteon a global level. You should select the META keywords based on the keywords appearing in your content with the greatest frequency. Be honest and use META keywords that actually appear in your content. Search engines penalize you for over use of keywords, known as keyword stuffing. Title Optimization What's in the actual title of your page? The keywords you insert into your site and article's titles play a huge role in successful search engine optimization. As with META tags, the key is to insert frequently-used, but not stuffed, keywords into your title, which correlate the relevancy of the site's title (what we say about our site)with the metadata (how we describe what it's about) and the actual content, which is indisputably "what the website is about". Content Optimization Writing clear content that uses pertinent language in our intended message or service is the key to content optimization. In your content, include naturally-written, keyword-rich content. This will tie into your META tags, title description and other portions of your site to help you achieve content relevance and thus higher search engine rankings. One note of caution—while we use our best keywords frequently within our text; we should not cram these words into our content. So don't be afraid to break out the thesaurus and include some alternative words and descriptions! Good content SEO is about achieving a balance between what the search engines see, and what your readers expect on arrival. Keyword Research and Optimization Researching our keywords not only gives us an idea of how our competitors are optimizing their websites, but also gives us a treasure-trove of alternative keywords that we can use to further optimize our own sites. There are several online tools that can give us an idea of what keywords are most typically searched for, and how the end-users phrase their searches. This provides avital two-way pathway into the visitor's minds, showing not only how they reach the products and information they seek, but also how they perceive those items. You can find a listing of free keyword research tools at:http://www.joomlawarrior.com. For our example, we'll use Google's freely available keyword suggestion tool for its AdWords program, and use Joomla! itself as our intended optimization candidate.See http://www.google.com/adwords for the keyword tool. The following example will demonstrate the AdWords tool and how it helps you determine good keywords for your site. Entering joomla into Google's keyword suggestion tool yields the following display: The three key pieces of information as seen in the previous figure, which help us inmaking a decision about keywords, are as follows: Keywords: This column indicates the keyword whose Search Volume and Advertiser Competition we want to check. Advertiser Competition: This is graphical indicator of how many ads are in rotation for this keyword. Search Volume: Graphical indication of how many people in the world are searching this keyword for a product or service. As we see from the example, when we search for the keyword joomla we see a lower Advertiser Competition than content management system, but a higher SearchVolume. If we then examine open source we see a heavy Advertiser Competition, but the same Search Volume as joomla. What this means is that if we advertise in the crowded keyword space—"open source", we can expect a lot of competition. Changing our keyword to Joomla! would give us less competition and about the same Search Volume. If we advertise something related to Joomla! then that would be the best choice. However, if we were advertising a tool for open source, we would want to spend our money on the keyword "open source". The last take away from this is if we are selling a joomla template, you see from the figure that there isn't much competition (at the time thiswas taken), but a healthy amount of Search Volume.

  Foreword by Alexander Limi, co-founder of Plone It's always fascinating how life throws you a loop now and then that changes your future in a profound way—and you don't realize it at the time. As I sit here almost six years after the Plone project started, it seems like a good time to reflect on how the last years changed everything, and some of the background of why you are holding this book in your hands—because the story about the Plone community is at least as remarkable as the software itself. It all started out in a very classic way—I had just discovered Zope and Python, and wanted to build a simple web application to teach myself how they worked. This was back in 1999, when Zope was still a new, unproven technology, and had more than a few rough spots. I have never been a programmer, but Python made it all seem so simple that I couldn't resist trying to build a simple web application with it. After reading what I could find of documentation at the time, I couldn't quite figure it out—so I ended up in the online Zope chat rooms to see if I could get any help with building my web application. Little did I know that what happened that evening would change my life in a significant way. I met Alan Runyan online, and after trying to assist me, we ended up talking about music instead. We also reached the conclusion that I should focus on what I was passionate about—instead of coding, I wanted to build great user interfaces and make things easy to use. Alan wanted to provide the plumbing to make the system work. For some reason, it just clicked at that point, and we collaborated online and obsessed over the details of the system for months. External factors were probably decisive here too: I was without a job, and my girlfriend had left me a few months prior; Alan had just given up his job as a Java programmer at a failed dot-com company and decided to start his own company doing Python instead—so we both ended up pouring every living hour into the project, and moving at a break-neck pace towards getting the initial version out. We ended up getting a release ready just before the EuroPython Conference in 2002, and this was actually the first time I met Alan in person. We had been working on Plone for the past year just using email and IRC chat—two technologies that are still cornerstones of Plone project communication. I still remember the delight in discovering that we had excellent communication in person as well. What happened next was somewhat surreal for people new to this whole thing: we were sitting in the audience in the "State of Zope" talk held by Paul Everitt. He got to the part of his talk where he called attention to people and projects that he was especially impressed with. When he called out our names and talked about how much he liked Plone—which at this point was still mostly the effort of a handful of people—it made us feel like we were really onto something. This was our defining moment. For those of you who don't know Paul, he is one of the founders of Zope Corporation, and would go on to become our most tireless and hard-working supporter. He got involved in all the important steps that would follow—he put a solid legal and marketing story in place and helped create the Plone Foundation—and did some great storytelling along the way. There is no way to properly express how much Paul has meant to us personally—and to Plone—five years later. His role was crucial in the story of Plone's success, and the project would not be where it is now without him. Looking back, it sounds a bit like the classic romanticized start-up stories of Silicon Valley, except that we didn't start a company together. We chose to start two separate companies—in hindsight a very good decision. It never ceases to amaze me how much of an impact the project has had since. We are now an open-source community of hundreds of companies doing Plone development, training, and support. In just the past month, large companies like Novell and Akamai—as well as government agencies like the CIA, and NGOs like Oxfam—have revealed that they are using Plone for their web content management, and more will follow. The Plone Network site, plone.net, lists over 150 companies that offer Plone services, and the entire ecosystem is estimated to have revenues in the hundreds of millions of US dollars annually. This year's Plone Conference in Naples, Italy is expected to draw over 300 developers and users from around the world. Not bad for a system that was conceived and created by a handful of people standing on the shoulders of the giants of the Zope and Python communities. But the real story here is about an amazing community of people—individuals and organizations, large and small—all coming together to create the best content management system on the planet. We meet in the most unlikely locations—from ancient castles and mountain-tops in Austria, to the archipelagos and fjords of Norway, the sandy beaches of Brazil, and the busy corporate offices of Google in Silicon Valley. These events are at the core of the Plone experience, and developers nurture deep friendships within the community. I can say without a doubt that these are the smartest, kindest, most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. One of those people is Martin Aspeli, whose book you are reading right now. Even though we're originally from the same country, we didn't meet that way. Martin was at the time—and still is—living in London. He had contributed some code to one of our community projects a few months prior, and suggested that we should meet up when he was visiting his parents in Oslo, Norway. It was a cold and dark winter evening when we met at the train station—and ended up talking about how to improve Plone and the community process at a nearby café. I knew there and then that Martin would become an important part of the Plone project. Fast-forward a few years, and Martin has risen to become one of Plone's most important and respected—not to mention prolific—developers. He has architected and built several core components of the Plone 3 release; he has been one of the leaders on the documentation team, as well as an active guide in Plone's help forums. He also manages to fit in a day job at one of the "big four" consulting companies in the world. On top of all this, he was secretly working on a book to coincide with the Plone 3.0 release—which you are now the lucky owner of. This brings me to why this book is so unique, and why we are lucky to have Martin as part of our community. In the fast-paced world of open-source development—and Plone in particular—we have never had the chance to have a book that was entirely up-to-date on all subjects. There have been several great books in the past, but Martin has raised the bar further—by using the writing of a book to inform the development of Plone. If something didn't make sense, or was deemed too complex for the problem it was trying to solve—he would update that part of Plone so that it could be explained in simpler terms. It made the book better, and it has certainly made Plone better. Another thing that sets Martin's book apart is his unparalleled ability to explain advanced and powerful concepts in a very accessible way. He has years of experience developing with Plone and answering questions on the support forums, and is one of the most patient and eloquent writers around. He doesn't give up until you know exactly what's going on. But maybe more than anything, this book is unique in its scope. Martin takes you through every step from installing Plone, through professional development practices, unit tests, how to think about your application, and even through some common, non-trivial tasks like setting up external caching proxies like Varnish and authentication mechanisms like LDAP. In sum, this book teaches you how to be an independent and skillful Plone developer, capable of running your own company—if that is your goal—or provide scalable, maintainable services for your existing organization. Five years ago, I certainly wouldn't have imagined sitting here, jet-lagged and happy in Barcelona this Sunday morning after wrapping up a workshop to improve the multilingual components in Plone. Nor would I have expected to live halfway across the world in San Francisco and work for Google, and still have time to lead Plone into the future. Speaking of which, how does the future of Plone look like in 2007? Web development is now in a state we could only have dreamt about five years ago—and the rise of numerous great Python web frameworks, and even non-Python solutions like Ruby on Rails has made it possible for the Plone community to focus on what it excels at: content and document management, multilingual content, and solving real problems for real companies—and having fun in the process. Before these frameworks existed, people would often try to do things with Plone that it was not built or designed to do—and we are very happy that solutions now exist that cater to these audiences, so we can focus on our core expertise. Choice is good, and you should use the right tool for the job at hand. We are lucky to have Martin, and so are you. Details of Data Processing: This package accomplishes the following: Connect to the SQL Server 2005 and access the MyNorthwind (a copy of the Northwind) database. A Data Reader Source will extract data using the following query: Select orderID, quantity, UnitPrice from [Order details] A Derived Column data transformation will add a column to the data flow which contains a combination of data from two other columns. A Conditional Split transformation divides the data flow into two flows based on a certain value in the derived column. The rows that satisfies the condition are captured in a recordset destination. The rest of the flow (bad data) gets routed to the next processor, the Aggregate Transformation. The Aggregate transformation orders the data coming into it showing group averages of the derived column. This grouped data then gets into a recordset destination. Although the final data ends up in recordset destinations, they can also be persisted to other destinations such as Data Reader, OLEDB and File system. Implementation in the Visual Studio 2005 Designer Before going into the details of the data processing let us take a look at the building blocks from the VS 2005 Toolbox that can be used to implement it and the interconnections between the building blocks. In addition to the data flow controls three data viewers are also inserted to stop and inspect the data before it goes any further. Data Extraction The data is extracted from MyNorthwind database on the SQL Server 2005. While configuring the Data Reader, you make use of a Connection Manager. The details of this Connection Manager is shown in its editor as in the next figure. The connection uses the SqlClient Data Provider. The SQL Server is a default installation with the name [.] and as it is set for SQL Server authentication username and password are required. The database connection is chosen from the drop-down as shown. The connectivity test can be performed and it now allows the data reader to extract data from the database. The Data Reader is added to the design surface by double clicking the control in the Toolbox. The Data Reader uses the connection manager to access the SQL Server as you see in the next figure in its Connection Manager's tab. The Data Reader's Property shows some of the other configuration details made by the other tabs in the above editor. In particular it shows the query used in extracting the data. It extracts three columns from the Order Details table in the MyNorthwind database and provides this to the next component in the data processing implementation.

Create Models or Use a Library? There are two possibilities when working with furniture. We can create new furniture, or use pre-made models from a library. The question is: when must we use each type? Some people say that using a pre-made model is not very professional thing but what they forget to say is that most projects have a tight deadline, and we need a quick modeling process to be ready on time. So, what's most important for professionals? Getting things done, or telling the client that all the models were created just for his project? Of course, the deadline is the most important, and your clients normally won't mind if you use pre-made models. Probably they won't even notice. So don't be ashamed to use pre-made models they won't make your projects any less professional. It's even recommended to use these models to speed-up the process, and allow you to spend more time on lighting or texturing. Is there any situation that demands the creation of a furniture model from scratch? Well, there are some. First, if you can't find the model in any library that you know, then it's going to be necessary to create it from scratch. If you are working with an architect who designs the spaces and furniture as well, you will probably have to model the furniture too, since it won't be available at any public library. Any project that deals with customized furniture will require that we work on the modeling for the furniture. Create your own libraryA good practice for anyone doing architectural visualization is to collect a lot of 3D models from public libraries for use in future projects. Keep these models for later, but don't forget to check if the author has released the models with no restrictions for commercial use. Otherwise, you must get their permission to use them. If you want to create your library, with no restrictions, why not create your own models? This could be a good exercise: take a few examples, and start creating some furniture. With time, you will have a good number of models. How to Get Started? In most cases, we have to get used to all that furniture modeling. We will have to start from scratch, with no blueprints available. The only references that we will have would be the photos, either provided by our clients, or provided from some web resources. If you have the time, visit a real store, and take some pictures and measures on your own. Sometimes, these stores will give you fliers and brochures, especially if you work with architecture. With time, you will get a lot of good reference material, and some of them come with measurements. But, if you don't know where to get started, let me point out some great web resources: http://www.e-interiors.net http://resources.blogoscopia.com http://blender-archi.tuxfamily.org/Models http://www.katorlegaz.com/ http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse The first link has a lot of reference images classified by furniture type and designer. And sometimes, they even provide free 3D models. Most models there are saved in DXF, or 3DS file formats. Appending Models Before we start to model, let's see how we can import a model form an external library into Blender. The process is very simple, and what we have to do is to use the File menu, and access the Append or Link option. There is a shortcut for that too - just press SHIFT+F1 to call the same function. With this option, we have to select file that is already in the Blender file format. This option won't import files in other formats. When we select a file, a list of elements available in that particular file will be displayed, for us to select what we want to import. In most cases, the models will be stored under Object. When we click the Object option, all of the objects available in the file will be listed. If you know the name of the object that you want to import, just select the name, and click Load Library. The object will be loaded into our scene. Here, we have two options to handle this object: Append or Link: Append: If we choose this option, the object will be merged into ourcurrent scene. Link: With this option, an external link to the object file will be created. Any modifications to the original file will be reflected in our current scene. What is the best method to use? It will depend on whether we are willing to track all modifications applied to our furniture models. Using the Link method is a great way of keeping the furniture updated, because every modification at the original file is reflected immediately in the scene in which this model is placed. However, we will have to take the original file with the scene file every time we need to put our scene on another computer. They always have to go together. But if you choose to use the Append option, things will be a bit simpler, because the object will be incorporated into the scene file. We won't have to be worried about moving the furniture file along with the scene. Always use the Append option when you want to use furniture, or any other model, saved in another Blender file. To use a furniture model saved in another file, with a type other than “.blend”, we have to use the Import option. Importing Models To import a model, the process is very simple. We must use the File menu and select, Import. Then we have to select the proper file type from the list. The best file type, and the most common for furniture blocks, is the 3Ds file format, which belongs to the old 3D Studio application. There are some other good formats that work well with Blender, such as OBJ and LWO. The 3Ds file format can store lights, and it works well with Blender. The only thing we have to take extra care about is that most models imported come with triangular faces, which are a bit harder to edit. But, if you don't need to make any modifications to the model, this won't be a problem. Append or Import?Just to make things clearer, if you download a furniture model from a web site, and it's saved in the Blender native file format (.blend), you should append the model. If you download or get a furniture model on any file format other than “.blend”, you will have to import it. Since most models aren't saved in the Blender native file format, we can safely say that almost all furniture models that you find will require an import action to be placed in your scenes. Modeling a Chair Let's start with something simple, such as a chair. Even for a simple model, it will help us deal with smaller dimensions and details. Here is an image of the model: What's the main objective of this modeling? We have to create this chair, with the minimum use of faces and vertices. A good amount of detail can be left for textures, and it's always a good choice to use a lower number of vertices and faces in a model. If you consider one model, it won't matter much. But with a large number of chairs, such as in a theater room, it can make a difference in render time. Let's get started with a simple cube. Select this cube, and change the work mode to Edit. Select all vertices and press the W key. This will open the Specials menu. Choose subdivide, just once, from this menu. This will create new vertices and edges. Once these new vertices have been created, as shown in the image to the left, below, press the A key to remove all of the objects from the selection. Now, select the vertices to the right, using the B key. Remember to change the view mode to Wireframe before using the B key, otherwise, we won't be able to select the vertices behind the visible faces. When these vertices are selected, press the X key and choose Vertices to erase only the selected vertices. Using the CTRL+R key, add a new edge loop to the model, as shown in the following image: The next step is to change the scale of our model. Rotate the view to see the model in perspective view. Select all objects and press the S key, immediately after pressing the Z key. This will make the scale work only in the Z axis. Now, select the vertices identified in the following image and erase them using the X key. Change the selection mode to Edges, and select the edges identified in the following image. With the edges selected, press the E key to extrude them. With the new faces created, we can now add some detail to the model. Select only the top edge of the previously created faces. Move this edge down just a bit. This will add a small declivity to the seat. Now, we can move on to the next extrude, which must be from the selected edges identified in the following image. I'm not using any kind of measure for this example, but if you like to work only with real measurements, remember to hold the CTRL key every time a new extrude or edge is moved. This way, all transformations will use the grid lines. For this model, I'm not using vertex snap. With the new faces created, select just the two edges identified in the following image. Extrude these edges until they reach the other side of the base model. Hold the CTRL key, while you extrude them, to help with the precision. If you already want to remove duplicated vertices, select all objects, and press the W key. Choose Remove doubles to erase any duplicated vertices. Select the edges identified in the image to keep adding more parts to the chair. Extrude the edges three times until you have the same structure showed here. Now, we have to close the top with a face. To do that, we must select all four vertices on the top. When the vertices are selected, press the F key to create a new face. The next step is to select the small side edges to create some detail. Select just one edge, beginning from bottom to top, and move it just a bit. Repeat this operation with the other edges until we get the edges positioned as in the following image. The basic shape of our chair has now been created. Now, we can make some adjustments for improving the overall proportions. Select all edges or vertices on the left side, and move them a bit to the left. This will make the model wider. Did you notice that we have modeled only half a chair? Now we can make the other half, using the Mirror modifier. Add the modifier, and choose the right axis to make a perfect copy. If the center point for the model has been moved, you might need to edit the model to create a perfect mirrored match. Don't worry if you have moved the model by accident - this can happen sometimes. Along with the Mirror modifier, add a Subsurf modifier, too. With the Subsurf modifier, we realize that this model needs a new edge loop on the left side. Just press CTRL+R, and add a new loop, as in the following image.

Before you start developing object-oriented solutions with PHP 5, it is important to understand that its object model provides more features than PHP 4's object model. Like most object-oriented languages, PHP 5 allows the developer to take advantage of interfaces, abstract classes, private/public/protected access modifiers, static members and methods, exception handling, and other features that were not available in PHP 4. But perhaps the most important thing to note about the object-oriented improvements of PHP 5 is that objects are now referenced byhandle, and not by value. Building Blocks of Applications As you no doubt know, the fundamental building block in any object-oriented language is a structure called a class. A class is a template for an object. It describes the data and behavior of its instances (objects). During run time, an application can create as many instances of a single class as necessary. The following diagram conceptually depicts the structure of a class. You might find it handy to think of an object-oriented application as a building made of blocks, where classes are those blocks. However, it is important to note that all blocks in this case are exchangeable. What this means is that if you are not satisfied with the implementation of a certain class, you can use a relevant class that has the same Application Programming Interface (API) but a different implementation instead. This allows you to increase the reusability and maintainability of your application, without increasing the complexity. The intent of the example discussed in this section is to illustrate how you can rewrite the implementation of a class so that this doesn't require a change in the existing code that employs this class. In particular, you'll see how a custom PHP 4 class designed to interact with Oracle can be rewritten to use the new object-oriented features available in PHP 5. Creating a Custom PHP Class from Scratch To proceed with the example, you first need to create a PHP 4 class interacting with Oracle. Then, within curly braces, you define class properties and methods. Since this class is designed to work under both PHP 4 and PHP 5, all the class properties are defined with the var keyword. Declaring a property with var makes it publicly readable and writable. In PHP 5, you would use the public keyword instead. In PHP 4, you define the class constructor as a function with the same name as the class itself. This still works in PHP 5 for backward compatibility. However, in PHP 5, it's recommended that you use __construct as the constructor name. In the above example, the class constructor is used to set the member variables of a class instance to the values passed to the constructor as parameters. Note the use of the self-referencing variable $this that is used here to access the member variables of the current class instance. Within class methods, you can use $this, the special variable that points to the current instance of a class. This variable is created automatically during the execution of any object's method and can be used to access both member variables of the current instance and its methods. Then, you call the GetConn method from within the constructor to obtain a connection to the database. You reference the method using the $this variable. In this example, the GetConn method is supposed to be called from within the constructor only. In PHP 5, you would declare this method as private. To obtain a connection to the database in this example, you use the OCILogon function. In PHP 5, you would use the oci_connect function instead. The query method defined here takes an SQL string as the parameter and then parses and executes the query. It returns true on success or false on failure. This method is supposed to be called from outside an object. So, in PHP 5, you would declare it as public. Finally, you define the fetch method. You will call this method to fetch the results retrieved by a SELECT statement that has been executed with the query method. Testing the Newly Created Class Once written, the dbConn4 class discussed in the preceding section can be used in applications in order to establish a connection to an Oracle database and then issue queries against it as needed. To see this class in action, you might use the following PHP script. Assuming that you have saved the dbConn4 class as the dbConn4.php file, save the following script as select.php: <?php //File: select.php require_once 'dbConn4.php'; require_once 'hrCred.php'; $db = new dbConn4($user, $pswd, $conn); $sql="SELECT FIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME FROM employees"; if($db->query($sql)){ print 'Employee Names: ' . So, before you can execute this script, you must create the hrCred.php file that contains all the information required to establish a connection to your Oracle database using the HR account. The hrCred.php file should look as shown below (note that the connection string may vary depending on your configuration): <?php //File: hrCred.php $user="hr"; $pswd="hr"; $conn="(DESCRIPTION= (ADDRESS_LIST= (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=orcl)(SERVER=DEDICATED)) )"; ?> Once you have created the hrCred.php script, you can execute the select.php script. As a result, it should output the names of employees from the employees table in the hr/hr demonstration schema. Taking Advantage of PHP 5's Object-Oriented Features Turning back to the dbConn4 class, you may have noticed that it was written for PHP 4. Of course, it still can be used in new applications written for PHP 5. However, to take advantage of the new object-oriented features available in PHP 5, you might want to rewrite this class as follows: <?php //File: dbConn5.php class dbConn5 { private $user; private $pswd; private $db; private $conn; private $query; private $row; private $exec_mode; public function __construct($user, $pswd, $db, $exec_mode= OCI_COMMIT_ON_SUCCESS) { $this->user = $user; $this->pswd = $pswd; $this->db = $db; $this->exec_mode = $exec_mode; $this->GetConn(); } private function GetConn() { if(!$this->conn = oci_connect($this->user, $this->pswd, $this->db)) { $err = oci_error(); trigger_error('Failed to establish a connection: ' . $err['message']); } } public function query($sql) { if(!$this->query = oci_parse($this->conn, $sql)) { $err = oci_error($this->conn); trigger_error('Failed to execute SQL query: ' . $err['message']); return false; } else if(!oci_execute($this->query, $this->exec_mode)) { $err = oci_error($this->query); trigger_error('Failed to execute SQL query: ' . $err['message']); return false; } return true; } public function fetch() { if($this->row=oci_fetch_assoc($this->query)){ return $this->row; } else { return false; } } } ?> As you can see, the implementation of the class has been improved to conform to the new standards of PHP 5. For instance, the above class takes advantage of encapsulation that is accomplished in PHP 5—like most other object-oriented languages—by means of access modifiers, namely public, protected, and private. The idea behind encapsulation is to enable the developer to design the classes that reveal only the important members and methods and hide the internals. For instance, the GetConn method in the dbConn5 class is declared with the private modifier because this method is supposed to be called only from inside the constructor when a new instance of the class is initialized; therefore, there is no need to allow client code to access this method directly. Since the implementation of the newly created dbConn5 class is different from the one used in dbConn4, you may be asking yourself: "Does that mean we need to rewrite the client code that uses the dbConn4 class as well?" The answer is obvious: you don't need to rewrite client code that uses the dbConn4 class since you have neither changed the Application Programming Interface (API) of the class nor,more importantly, its functionality. Thus, all you need to do in order to make the select.php script work with dbConn5 is simply replace all the references to dbConn4 with references to dbConn5 throughout the script.

This article will include: dotProject setup options including server, database, and browser issues Prerequisites for installation of the tool The process for control panels and browser-based installations Troubleshooting your installation Installing dotProject is usually an automated process if your server and database are already installed and configured. dotProject is packaged with an installation wizard that walks you through the basic setup process. It is always wise to have an understanding of the process and the setup options before you begin. Prerequisites It is important to make sure that everything is ready and in place for dotProject to be installed. Let's go over what we need to have prepared for a successful installation of dotProject. Before you Install It seems redundant to review the requirements again, doesn't it? There are a few last-minute things to discuss, especially if a control panel installation is not possible. First, make sure that the software required to run dotProject is already installed. Installing a web server, MySQL, and PHP is beyond the scope of this book. There are many fine books and online materials that explain the installation of web servers, MySQL, and PHP in detail. The dotProject team recommends the following environment: Apache web server (version 1.3.x or 2.x). MySQL server (version 3.23.x). A downloaded copy of dotProject. 2.0.4 or later is ideal. The most recent stable release can be downloaded from SourceForge. MySQL should be set up first, so that a dotProject user can create temporary tables during installation. Specifically, the database user should have ALTER and DROP permissions. In the section on browser-based installation, we will go over how to deal with the config.php file. If your installation already contains a config.php file (not a config_dist.php file, etc.), then dotProject will assume you are trying to upgrade. Your PHP installation should have register_globals set to OFF in order for dotProject to run in an optimized and more secure mode. The dotProject installer automatically detects the state of register_globals. dotProject will work with register_globals set to ON, but it is not recommended. LAMP, WAMP, or WIMP? There are several key requirements to run dotProject. You must have an active web server running PHP and MySQL, and an Internet browser. There are three main web-server setups that people running dotProject use. Which one you pick depends on what you already have and whether you have a preference for one over the other. If you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) you may not have a choice on which to use. LAMP : Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP WAMP : Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP WIMP : Windows, IIS, MySQL, PHP LAMP is the most popular in the open-source community. Using LAMP provides an entirely open-source environment. Web Server Most web servers used today are either Apache or Microsoft IIS. Apache version 1.3.x or 2.x should be used. Your ISP or that clever person in the IT department knows which one your organization is using. There are always exceptions, so check the dotProject forums if you are using a different web server. Apache is the preferred environment for running dotProject. PHP To install dotProject 2.0, you must be using version 4.1 or higher of the very popular online programming language PHP. If you are using an Internet Service Provider, check your service details to see if PHP is provided. PHP can be downloaded from http://www.php.net/downloads.php. PHP 4.46 is the last stable version of PHP 4. PHP 5 is not recommended for use with version 2.0.4. MySQL dotProject uses the MySQL database system. You will need to have it installed before you begin as well. Version 3.23.x is recommended for use with dotProject. MySQL can be downloaded from http://www.mysql.org/downloads/. The dotProjectteam recommends that MySQL version 5 and above should not be used with version 2.0.4 of dotProject. The recent release of dotProject, version 2.1.0-rc 1 has been made more compatible with PHP 5 and MySQL 5; however, the changes incorporated does not take care of this completely. The features of this release are discussed in http://docs.dotproject.net/index.php/What%27s_New_-_2.1.0_-_rc1. Windows Using a bundled combination of PHP/Apache/MySQL is the best way to go if you do not already have them installed. This will save you the time and headache of installing them one at a time. The dotProject volunteers list the Apache2Triad available at http://apache2triad.sourceforge.net. Since there are limitations of dotProject being compatible with PHP5, version 1.2.3 is the download that is advisable. Browser dotProject works best with browsers that support cascading style sheets (CSS) and JavaScript. JavaScript and cookies should be turned on for full functionality. Most recent browsers such as Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or better), Mozilla 1.2, Netscape 7.x, and Firefox will work just fine. dotProject's PNG image files with alpha-transparency render best in Internet Explorer 6.0 and above. Internet Explorer 7 provides increased support for PNG image files. Mail Server As of version 2.0, sending mail is not a requirement. Administrators can set up the outgoing mail in the Administration panel. Fonts TrueType fonts are used for JpGraph, which is in turn used by the Gantt charts module. Most of the fonts JpGraph uses should already be installed on your system. All the fonts are not provided with dotProject because some of them have very specific licenses. If the Gantt charts module is insisting that font files are missing and you don't already have a spare copy of the files, search SourceForge or another reliable site for available fonts. Memory Limit The Gantt charts module can eat up your allocated memory. If the Gantt charts won't appear, and there is no error, chances are, you've reached your memory limit as set in the php.ini file. If your service is hosted, you will need to talk to your Internet Service Provider about increasing the memory limit set in your php.ini file. Installation There are two methods of dotProject installation: Online control panel installation Browser-based installation The most recent versions of dotProject, 2.0 and later, are not meant to be manually installed. The online control panel method is very simple and usually takes between five and ten minutes. The browser-based installation generally takes a little longer, roughly ten minutes to an hour. Which should you choose? If you already have an ISP who hosts your domain, they probably already provide you with an installation script for dotProject using one of the popular online control panels such as cPanel or Plesk. If they do not have the script available, they may be willing to install it for you if you make the request. dotProject can also be installed using a browser-based installation wizard. I recommend the online control panel installation for people who want a quick installation or are not technically inclined. The browser installation method is best for IT administrators or those who are comfortable installing web applications. If your only choice is a browser installation, don't worry; we will walk through one later in this article. Backup First It is always smart to take back up of any crucial files or databases that might be affected by a new installation. Always have a backup plan when a new installation is about to be performed. Installing with an Online Control Panel Most control panel installations can be completed in a few steps. Be sure to write down or otherwise make a note of any file, folder paths, or other crucial information as you go. We will walk through a control panel installation using cPanel/Fantastico. If you have never used cPanel before, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet. Your ISP should have provided you with a link to your cPanel when you first setup your service. You will need a user name and password provided by your ISP to log in to cPanel. Once you are logged in you will see a screen with icons for different online tools. Log into your cPanel control panel. Select Fantastico (double mouse-click). The Fantastico icon is usually located at the bottom right corner of the screen. Scroll down the Fantastico screen until the Project Management category appears. Left mouse-click on dotProject. There will be a short description about dotProject. Make a note of the version of dotProject available. The latest stable installation should be listed. The version of dotProject is in parenthesis by the new installation link. We will be using version 2.0.4 in the examples. Click on the New Installation link to begin the installation process.Type in the name of the subfolder, where your dotProject installationshould be installed. If you leave it blank, then dotProject will be installed in the root folder of the URL path. For example, if I had left the folder field blank, the install tool would have placed the dotProject files directly in the public_html folder of www.leesjordan.net. I do not recommend leaving the folder field blank unless you already have a special URL set aside or are using a sub-domain.

Introduction Modules in Joomla can be used to fetch and display data almost anywhere on a page in a website.In this article, we will cover the following topics on module development. Registering the module in the database Getting and setting parameters Centralizing data access and output using helper classes Selecting display options using layouts Displaying the latest reviews Displaying a random review We will assume that we have a table in our database called jos_modules with the following fields title, ordering, position, published, module, showtitle, and params. We will also assume that we have a website that reviews different restaurants. However, visitors have to go to the component to see the reviews. We would be developing a module so that we could pull the content directly from the reviews and display them. Registering the Module in the Database As with the component, we will have to register the module in the database so that it can be referenced in the back end and used effectively. Entering a record into the jos_modules table will take care of this. Open your database console and enter the following query: INSERT INTO jos_modules (title, ordering, position, published, module, showtitle, params) VALUES ('Restaurant Reviews', 1, 'left', 1, 'mod_reviews', 1, 'style=simplenitems=3nrandom=1'); If you're using phpMyAdmin, enter the fields as in the following screen: If you refresh the front end right after entering the record in jos_modules, you'll notice that the module doesn't appear, even though the published column is set to 1. To fix this, go to Extensions | Module Manager in the back end and click the Restaurants Reviews link. Under Menu Assignment, select All and click Save. In the front end, the left-hand side of your front page should look similar to the following: Creating and Configuring a Basic Module Modules are both simple and flexible. You can create a module that simply outputs static text or one that queries remote databases for things like weather reports. Although you can create rather complex modules, they're best suited for displaying data and simple forms. You will not typically use a module for complex record or session management; you can do this through a component or plug-in instead. To create the module for our reviews, we will have to create a directory mod_reviews under /modules. We will also need to create the mod_reviews.php file inside mod_reviews. To start, we'll create a basic module that displays links to the most recent reviews. '</a><br />'; } ?> When you save the file and refresh the homepage, your module should look similar to the following: When the module is loaded, the $params object is pulled into scope and can be used to get and set the parameters. When we added the row into jos_modules, the params column contained three values: one for items (set to 3), one for style (set to simple), and another for random (set to 1). We set $items to the parameter items using the get() member function, defaulting to 1 if no value exists. If desired, you can use the member function set($name, $value) to override or add a parameter for your module. After getting a database object reference, we write a query to select the id and name form jos_reviews and order reverse chronologically by the published date. We use the second and third parameters of setQuery() to generate a LIMIT clause that is automatically added to the query. This ensures that the correct syntax is used for the database type. Once the query is built, we load all the relevant database rows, go through them, and provide a link to each review.

Data Types in Microsoft® Dynamics™ NAV

As you know, design of an application starts with the data. The data design depends on the types of data that your development tool set allows you to use. Since NAV is designed specifically to develop financially oriented business applications, the NAV data types are financially and business oriented, and also have some special features that make it easier to design and develop typical business applications. Furthermore, these same special features can make your applications run faster. In this article, we will cover the data types that you are most likely to use. We will also take an overview of the others. In addition, we will also cover field classes, which are where the special features are enabled. Fields A field is the basic element of data definition in NAV—the "atom" in the structure of a system. The mechanical definition of a field consists of its number, its description (name), and its data type (and, of course, any parameters required for its particular data type). From a logical point of view, a field is also defined by its Properties and the C/AL code contained in its Triggers. Field Properties The specific properties that can be defined for a field partially depend on the data type. First we will review the universal field properties. Then we will review the properties that are data-type dependent plus some other field properties. You can check out the remaining properties by using Help within the Table Designer.Fields You can access the properties of a field while viewing the table in Design mode, by highlighting the field line whose properties you wish to examine and clicking on the Properties icon or pressing Shift + F4. All the property screenshots in this section are obtained in this way for fields within the standard Customer table. As we review various field properties, you will learn more if, using the Object Designer, you follow along in your NAV system. Poke around and explore different properties and the values they can have. Use the Field Help function liberally and read the help for various properties. The property value enclosed in < > (less than sign, greater than sign), is the default value for that property. When you set a property to any other value, < and > should not be present unless they are supposed to be the part of the property value (e.g. part of a Text string value).All data types have the following properties: Property Property Description Field No. Identifier for the field within the table object Name Label by which code references the field. The name can be changed at any time and NAV will automatically ripple that change throughout the code Caption and Caption ML Work similarly as named table properties Description Used for internal documentation only Data Type Identifies what kind of data format applies to this field (e.g. Integer, Date, Code, Text, etc.) Enabled Determines if the field is activated for data handling or not. This property defaults to yes and is rarely changed   The following screenshot shows the BLOB properties for the Picture Field in the Customer table: This set of properties, for fields of the BLOB data type, is the simplest set of field properties. After the properties that are shared by all data types, appear the BLOB-specific properties—SubType and Owner:    SubType: This defines the type of data stored in the BLOB. The three  sub-type choices are Bitmap (for bitmap graphics), Memo (for text data), and  User-Defined (for anything else). User-Defined is the default value.    Owner: The usage is not defined.   The available properties of Code and Text fields are quite similar to one another. The following are some common properties between the two as shown in the screenshot overleaf:   DataLength: This specifies how many characters long the data field is. InitValue: This is the value that the system should supply as a default when  the system actively initializes the field. AltSearchField: This allows definition of an alternative field in the same  table to be searched for a match if no match is found on a lookup on this datastyle="width: 761px; height: 446px;"  item. For example, you might want to allow customers to be looked up eitherstyle="width: 761px; height: 446px;"  by their Customer No. or by their Phone No. In that case, in the No. field  properties you would supply the Phone No. field name in the AltSearchField  field. Then, when a user searches in the No. field, NAV will first look for  a match in the No. field and, if it is not found there, it will then search  the Phone No. field for a match. Use of this property can save you a lot of  coding, but make sure both fields have high placement in a key so the lookup  will be speedy. Editable: This is set to No when you don't want to allow a field to ever be  edited for example, if this is a computed or assigned value field that the user  should not change. NotBlank, Numeric, CharAllowed, DateFormula, and ValuesAllowed: All  these support placing constraints on the specific data that can be entered into  this field. TableRelation and ValidateTableRelation: These are used to  control referencing and validation of entries against another table.  (TestTableRelation is an infrequently used property, which controls whether  or not this relationship should be tested during a database validation test.) Let us take a look at the properties of couple more Data types, Integer and Decimal. You may find it useful to explore them on your own as well. Specific properties related to the basic numeric content of these data types are as follows and are also shown in the following screenshot: DecimalPlaces: This sets the number of decimal places in a Decimal  data item. BlankNumbers, BlankZero, and SignDisplacement: All these can be used to  influence the formatting and display of the data in the field. MinValue and MaxValue: These can constrain the range of data values allowed. AutoIncrement: This allows setting up of one field in a table to automatically  increment for each record entered. This is almost always used to support  automatic updating of a field used as the last field in a primary key, enabling  creation of a unique key. The field properties for an Integer field with a FieldClass property of FlowField are similar to those of a field with a FieldClass property of Normal. The differencesstyle="width: 761px; height: 446px;"relate to the fact that the field does not actually contain data but holds the formula by which the displayed value is calculated, as shown in the following screenshot overleaf. Note the presence of the CalcFormula property and the absence of the AltSearchField, AutoIncrement, and TestTableRelation properties. Similar differences exist for FlowFields of other data types. The properties for an Option data type, whose properties are shown in the following screenshot, are essentially like those of the other numeric data types, but with a datatype-specific set of properties as described below: OptionString: This spells out the text interpretations for the stored integer  values contained in Option data type fields. OptionCaption and OptionCaptionML: These serve the same captioning  and multi-language purposes as other caption properties. The properties defined for FlowFilter fields, such as Date Filter in the following screenshot overleaf, are similar to those of Normal data fields. Take a look at the Date Filter field (a Date FlowFilter field) and the Global Dimension 1 Filter field (a Code FlowFilter field) in the Customer table. Using Lists with MediaWiki The three types of lists available in HTML—unordered lists, ordered lists, and definition lists—are also available in MediaWiki. In MediaWiki, we can use both HTML and wiki syntax for creating lists. We will explore both techniques in this article. Unordered List Creating unordered lists in MediaWiki is very simple. In order to create an unordered list in MediaWiki using wiki syntax, keep the following rules in mind: Use the asterisk (*) sign at the beginning of each line for creating a list element. The number of asterisks you add before the line will indicate the level of list element in the unordered list. For example, ** will indicate a second-level list element, while *** will indicate a third-level list element, and so on. In order to restart an unordered list, put a wiki line break (an empty line) at the end of the list. Then you can start another list using *. Let's open a new page and write the following content in order to create an unordered list: * Ghost Directory - North America:** United States of America.*** Florida.*** New York.**** Long Island**** Manhattan**** Cooney Island*** New Jersey*** Michigan* Ghost Directory - Europe:** United Kingdom*** Liverpool*** Fulham** Ireland** Finland** SwedenOther directories.* Bangladesh* India. Ordered List The basic difference between unordered and ordered lists is that while we see only bullets for unordered lists, in an ordered list we will see numbers like 1,2... etc. In order to create an ordered list in MediaWiki using wiki syntax, keep the following rules in mind: Use the hash (#) sign for creating each list element. The number of hashes you add before the line will indicate the level of list element in the ordered list. For example, ## will indicate a second-level list element, ### will indicate a third-level list element, and so on. In order to restart an ordered list, put a blank line at the end of the list. Then you can then start another list using #. However, there still are some places where we have to use HTML instead of wiki syntax. Take this example: we have a list of ghost sighting for the last 100 years starting from early 1900s. We want to show the sightings sequentially using the years rather than 1, 2, 3, etc. In MediaWiki all ordered lists start from 1, and we cannot define any attribute for wiki syntax. Hence it is not possible for us to start with predefined numbering. Maybe future MediaWiki versions will have something to accommodate this feature. If you've ever wondered how people find your website or how to generate more traffic, then this article tells you more about your visitors. Knowing where they come from, what posts they like, how long they stay, and other site metrics are all valuable information to have as a blogger. You would expect to pay for such a deep look into the underbelly of your blog, but Google wants to give it to you for free. Why for free? The better your site does, the more likely you are to pay for AdWords or use other Google tools. The Google Analytics online statistics application is a delicious carrot to encourage content rich sites and better ad revenue for everyone involved. You also want people to find your blog when they perform a search about your topic. The painful truth is that search engines have to find your blog first before it will show up in their results. There are thousands of new blogs being created everyday. If you want people to be able to find your blog in the increasingly crowded blogosphere, optimizing your blog for search engines will improve the odds. Improving Your Blog with Google Analytics Analytics gives you an overwhelming amount of data to use for measuring the success of your sites, and ads. Once you've had time to analyze that data, you will want to take action to improve the performance of your blog, and ads. We'll now look at how Analytics can help you make decisions about the design, and content of your site. Analyzing Navigation The Navigation section of the Content Overview report reveals how your visitors actually navigate your blog. Visitors move around a site in ways we can't predict. Seeing how they actually navigate a site and where they entered the site are powerful tools we can use to diagnose where we need to improve our blog. Exploring the Navigation Summary The Navigation Summary shows you the path people take through your site, including how they get there and where they go. We can see from the following graphical representation that our visitors entered the site through the main page of the blog most of the time. After reaching that page, over half the time, they went to other pages within the site. Entrance Paths We can see the path, the visitors take to enter our blog using the Entrance Paths report. It will show us from where they entered our site, which pages they looked at, and the last page they viewed before exiting. Visitors don't always enter by the main page of a site, especially if they find the site using search engines or trackbacks. The following screenshot displays a typical entrance path. The visitor comes to the site home page, and then goes to the full page of one of the posts. It looks like our visitors are highly attracted to the recipe posts. Georgia may want to feature more posts about recipes that tie in with her available inventory. Optimizing your Landing Page The Landing Page reports tell you where your visitors are coming from, and if they have used keywords to find you. You have a choice between viewing the source visitors used to get to your blog, or the keywords. Knowing the sources will give you guidance on the areas you should focus your marketing or advertising efforts on. Examining Entrance Sources You can quickly see how visitors are finding your site, whether through a direct link, or a search engine, locally from Blogger, or from social networking applications such as Twitter.com. In the Entrance Sources graph shown in the following screenshot, we can see that the largest among the number of people are coming to the blog using a direct link. Blogger is also responsible for a large share of our visitors, which is over 37%. There is even a visitor drawn to the blog from Twitter.com, where Georgia has an account. Discovering Entrance Keywords When visitors arrive at your site using keywords, the words they use will show up on the report. If they are using words in a pattern that do not match your site content, you may see a high bounce rate. You can use this report to redesign your landing page to better represent the purpose of your site by the words, and phrases that you use. Interpreting Click Patterns When visitors visit your site they show their attraction to links, and interactive content by clicking on them. Click Patterns are the representation of all those mouse clicks over a set time period. Using the Site Overlay reporting feature, you can visually see the mouse clicks represented in a graphical pattern. Much like collared pins stuck on a wall chart they will quickly reveal to you, which areas of your site visitors clicked on the most, and which links they avoided. Understanding Site Overlay Site Overlay shows the number of clicks for your site by laying them transparently in a graphical format on top of your site. Details with the number of clicks, and goal tracking information pop up in a little box when you hover over a click graphic with your mouse. At the top of the screen are options that control the display of the Site Overlay. Clicking the Hide Overlay link will hide the overlay from view. The Displaying drop-down list lets you choose how to view mouse Clicks on the page, or goals. The date range is the last item displayed. The graphical bars shown on top of the page content indicate where visitors clicked, and how many of them did so. You can quickly see what areas of the page interest your visitors the most. Based on the page clicks you see, you will have an idea of the content, and advertising that is most interesting to your visitors. Yes, Site Overlay will show the content areas of the page the visitors clicked on, and the advertisement areas. It will also help you see which links are tied to goals, and whether they are enticing your visitors to click. Optimizing Your Blog for Search Engines We are going to take our earlier checklists and use them as guides on where to make changes to our blog. When the changes are complete, the blog will be more attractive to search engines and visitors. We will start with changes we can make "On-site", and then progress to ways we can improve search engine results with "Off-site" improvements. Optimizing On-site The most crucial improvements we identified earlier were around the blog settings, template, and content. We will start with the easiest fixes, then dive into the template to correct validation issues. Let's begin with the settings in our Blogger blog. Seeding the Blog Title and Description with Keywords When you created your blog, did you take a moment to think about what words potential visitors were likely to type in when searching for your blog? Using keywords in the title and description of your blog gives potential visitors a preview and explanation of the topics they can expect to encounter in your blog. This information is what will also display in search results when potential visitors perform a search. Updating the Blog Title and Description It's never too late to seed your blog title and description with keywords. We will edit the blog title and description to optimize them for search engines. Login to your blog and navigate to Settings | Basic. We are going to replace the current title text with a phrase that more closely fits the blog. Type Organic Fruit for All into the Title field. Now, we are going to change the description of the blog. Type Organic Fruit Recipes, seasonal tips, and guides to healthy living into the description field. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the Save Settings button. Y ou can enter up to 500 characters of descriptive text. What Just Happened? When we changed the title and description of our blog in the Basic Settings section, Blogger saved the changes and updated the template information as well. Now, when search engines crawl our blog, they will see richer descriptions of our blog in the blog title and blog description. The next optimization task is to verify that search engines can index our blog.

Installing SQL Server Analysis Services SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) gets installed during the SQL Server 2008 (February 2008 CTP) installation. At that time the Service Accounts for the various components are also set up as shown in this screen shot taken during a typical installation. For full details review the following article on SQL Server 2008 installation. The Analysis Services is also configured during the same installation as shown displaying the default directories for Data, log file, backup etc. Starting and Stopping the SSAS The Analysis Services can be started and stopped from the Services in the local machine which can be accessed from All Programs | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. Connecting to SSAS from SQL Server Management Studio File | Connect Object Explorer... in SQL Server Management Studio allows you to access the UI shown below where you can provide login information and get connected to the Analysis Services as shown. Out of the box, the SSAS comes up with a simple folder structure as shown. It does not come with databases. You may create a new database (this is not to be confused with databases on the Database Engine of SQL Server 2008). The database you create here will have the same folder structure as the Analysis Services Project folder structure when you start with VS 2008. Creating an Analysis Services Project in VS 2008 File | New | Project... opens the New Project window. Choose Business Intelligence Projects and from the Visual Studio installed templates choose Analysis Services Project. Change the default name of project to Nwind2008. This creates an empty project with a number of folders as shown. Although this is an empty structure you can deploy it on the server. To deploy right click with Nwind2008 highlighted and choose to deploy. After the processing is successfully completed you will see that Nwind 2008 is now available on the localhost. Adding a Data Source Right click on Data Sources folder and this will display the menu item New Data Source... as shown. Click on New Data Source... to open the Data Source Wizard as shown in the next figure. Read carefully the instructions on this page. In particular note that in order to change features of the data source you need to call up the next wizard - The Data Source View Wizard. Click on the Next button. This opens the page "Select how to define the connection" of the wizard as shown in the next figure. Here you can either create a data source based on an existing connection or use a new connection, or create a data source based on another object. The window also displays the existing connections under Data Connections and for each highlighted connection displays the properties on the right side. The New... button allows you to create a new connection by guiding you with more interactive windows. Click on Hodentek2.Northwind (<Server Name>.<database name>) (this will be different in your case) choose this data source and click on the Next button. This opens the Impersonation Page of the Data Source Wizard as shown with all text boxes empty, but with the Windows user name and password as default choice. Northwind database is not installed when you install SQL Server 2008. You may follow the procedure described in these articles to bring the Northwind database to SQL server 2008. Copying a Database from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 using the Copy Database Wizard and Moving a Database from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 in Three Steps. Change it to Use the service account and click on the Next button. This displays the Completing the Wizard page as shown where a Data source name and its connection information are displayed. Click on the Finish button. This adds the chosen data source to the Data Sources folder as shown. Northwind.ds is the file that is added and any changes to the source can be made by double clicking this file and applying the changes.

Since our project is a Web 2.0 application, it should be heavily focused on the user experience. The success of our application depends on getting users to post and share content on it. Therefore, the user interface of our application is one of our major concerns. This article will improve the interface of our application by introducing Ajax features, making it more user-friendly and interactive. Ajax and Its Advantages Ajax, which stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, consists of the following technologies: HTML and CSS for structuring and styling information. JavaScript for accessing and manipulating information dynamically. XMLHttpRequest, which is an object provided by modern browsers for exchanging data with the server without reloading the current web page. A format for transferring data between the client and server. XML is sometimes used, but it could be HTML, plain text, or a JavaScript-based format called JSON. Ajax technologies let code on the client-side exchange data with the server behind the scenes, without having to reload the entire page each time the user makes a request. By using Ajax, web developers are able to increase the interactivity and usability of web pages. Ajax offers the following advantages when implemented in the right places: Better user experience. With Ajax, the user can do a lot without refreshing the page, which brings web applications closer to regular desktop applications. Better performance. By exchanging only the required data with the server, Ajax saves bandwidth and increases the application's speed. There are numerous examples of web applications that use Ajax. Google Maps and Gmail are perhaps two of the most prominent examples. In fact, these two applications played an important role in spreading the adoption of Ajax, because of the success that they enjoyed. What sets Gmail from other web mail services is its user interface, which enables users to manage their emails interactively without waiting for a page reload after every action. This creates a better user experience and makes Gmail feel like a responsive and feature-rich application rather than a simple web site. This article explains how to use Ajax with Django so as to make our application more responsive and user friendly. We are going to implement three of the most common Ajax features found in web applications today. But before that, we will learn about the benefits of using an Ajax framework as opposed to working with raw JavaScript functions. Using an Ajax Framework in Django In this section we will choose and install an Ajax framework in our application. This step isn't entirely necessary when using Ajax in Django, but it can greatly simplify working with Ajax. There are many advantages to using an Ajax framework: JavaScript implementations vary from browser to browser. Some browsers provide more complete and feature-rich implementations, whereas others contain implementations that are incomplete or don't adhere to standards. Without an Ajax framework, the developer must keep track of browser support for the JavaScript features that they are using, and work around the limitations that are present in some browser implementations of JavaScript. On the other hand, when using an Ajax framework, the framework takes care of this for us; it abstracts access to the JavaScript implementation and deals with the differences and quirks of JavaScript across browsers. This way, we concentrate on developing features instead of worrying about browser differences and limitations. The standard set of JavaScript functions and classes is a bit lacking for fully fledged web application development. Various common tasks require many lines of code even though they could have been wrapped in simple functions. Therefore, even if you decide not to use an Ajax framework, you will find yourself having to write a library of functions that encapsulates JavaScript facilities and makes them more usable. But why reinvent the wheel when there are many excellent Open Source libraries already available? Ajax frameworks available on the market today range from comprehensive solutions that provide server-side and client-side components to light-weight client-side libraries that simplify working with JavaScript. Given that we are already using Django on the server-side, we only want a client-side framework. In addition, the framework should be easy to integrate with Django without requiring additional dependencies. And finally, it is preferable to pick a light and fast framework. There are many excellent frameworks that fulfil our requirements, such as Prototype, the Yahoo! UI Library and jQuery. I have worked with them all and they are all great. But for our application, I'm going to pick jQuery, because it's the lightest of the three. It also enjoys a very active development community and a wide range of plugins. If you already have experience with another framework, you can continue using it during this article. It is true that you will have to adapt the JavaScript code in this article to your framework, but Django code on the server-side will remain the same no matter which framework you choose. Now that you know the benefits of using an Ajax framework, we will move to installing jQuery into our project. Downloading and Installing jQuery One of the advantages of jQuery is that it consists of a single light-weight file. To download it, head to http://jquery.com/ and choose the latest version (1.2.3 at the time of writing). You will find two choices: Uncompressed version: This is the standard version that I recommend you to use during development. You will get a .js file with the library's code in it. Compressed version: You will also get a .js file if you download this version. However, the code will look obfuscated. jQuery developers produce this version by applying many operations on the uncompressed .js file to reduce its size, such as removing white spaces and renaming variables, as well as many other techniques. This version is useful when you deploy your application, because it offers exactly the same features as the uncompressed one, but with a smaller file size. I recommend the uncompressed version during development because you may want to look into jQuery's code and see how a particular method works. However, the two versions offer exactly the same set of features, and switching from one to another is just a matter of replacing one file. Once you have the jquery-xxx.js file (where xxx is the version number), rename it to jquery.js and copy it to the site_media directory of our project (Remember that this directory holds static files which are not Python code). Next, you will have to include this file in the base template of our site. This will make jQuery available to all of our project pages. To do so, open templates/base.html and add the highlighted code to the head section in it: <head> <title>Django Bookmarks | {% block title %}{% endblock %}</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/site_media/style.css"type="text/css" /> <script type="text/javascript"src="/site_media/jquery.js"></script></head> To add your own JavaScript code to an HTML page, you can either put the code in a separate .js file and link it to the HTML page by using the script tag as above, or write the code directly in the body of a script tag: <script type="text/javascript"> // JavaScript code goes here.</script> The first method, however, is recommended over the second one, because it helps keep the source tree organized by putting HTML and JavaScript code in different files. Since we are going to write our own .js files during this article, we need a way to link .js files to templates without having to edit base.html every time. We will do this by creating a template block in the head section of the base.html template. When a particular page wants to include its own JavaScript code, this block may be overridden to add the relevant script tag to the page. We will call this block external, because it is used to link external files to pages. Open templates/base.html and modify its head section as follows: <head> <title>Django Bookmarks | {% block title %}{% endblock %}</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/site_media/style.css" type="text/css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="/site_media/jquery.js"> </script> {% block external %}{% endblock %}</head> And we have finished. From now on, when a view wants to use some JavaScript code, it can link a JavaScript file to its template by overriding the external template block. Before we start to implement Ajax enhancements in our project, let's go through a quick introduction to the jQuery framework. The jQuery JavaScript Framework jQuery is a library of JavaScript functions that facilitates interacting with HTML documents and manipulating them. The library is designed to reduce the time and effort spent on writing code and achieving cross-browser compatibility, while at the same time taking full advantage of what JavaScript offers to build interactive and responsive web applications. The general workflow of using jQuery consists of two steps: Select an HTML element or a group of elements to work on. Apply a jQuery method to the selected group Element Selectors jQuery provides a simple approach to select elements; it works by passing a CSS selector string to a function called $. Here are some examples to illustrate the usage of this function: If you want to select all anchor (<a>) elements on a page, you can use the following function call: $("a") If you want to select anchor elements which have the .title CSS class, use $("a.title") To select an element whose ID is #nav, you can use $("#nav") To select all list item (<li>) elements inside #nav, use $("#nav li") And so on. The $() function constructs and returns a jQuery object. After that, you can call methods on this object to interact with the selected HTML elements. jQuery Methods jQuery offers a variety of methods to manipulate HTML documents. You can hide or show elements, attach event handlers to events, modify CSS properties, manipulate the page structure and, most importantly, perform Ajax requests. Before we go through some of the most important methods, I highly recommend using the Firefox web browser and an extension called Firebug to experiment with jQuery. This extension provides a JavaScript console that is very similar to the interactive Python console. With it, you can enter JavaScript statements and see their output directly without having to create and edit files. To obtain Firebug, go to http://www.getfirebug.com/, and click on the install link. Depending on the security settings of Firefox, you may need to approve the website as a safe source of extensions. If you do not want to use Firefox for any reason, Firebug's website offers a "lite" version of the extension for other browsers in the form of a JavaScript file. Download the file to the site_media directory, and then include it in the templates/base.html template as we did with jquery.js: <head> <title>Django Bookmarks | {% block title %}{% endblock %}</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/site_media/style.css" type="text/css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="/site_media/firebug.js"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/site_media/jquery.js"> </script> {% block external %}{% endblock %}</head> To experiment with the methods outlined in this section, launch the development server and navigate to the application's main page. Open the Firebug console by pressing F12, and try selecting elements and manipulating them. Hiding and Showing Elements Let's start with something simple. To hide an element on the page, call the hide() method on it. To show it again, call the show() method. For example, try this on the navigation menu of your application: >>> $("#nav").hide()>>> $("#nav").show() You can also animate the element while hiding and showing it. Try the fadeOut(), fadeIn(), slideUp() or slideDown() methods to see two of these animated effects. Of course, these methods (like all other jQuery methods) also work if you select more than one element at once. For example, if you open your user page and enter the following method call into the Firebug console, all of the tags will disappear: >>> $('.tags').slideUp() Accessing CSS Properties and HTML Attributes Next, we will learn how to change CSS properties of elements. jQuery offers a method called css() for performing CSS operations. If you call this method with a CSS property name passed as a string, it returns the value of this property: >>> $("#nav").css("display") Result: "block" If you pass a second argument to this method, it sets the specified CSS property of the selected element to the additional argument: >>> $("#nav").css("font-size", "0.8em") Result: <div id="nav" style="font-size: 0.8em;"> In fact, you can manipulate any HTML attribute and not just CSS properties. To do so, use the attr() method which works in a similar way to css(). Calling it with an attribute name returns the attribute value, whereas calling it with an attribute name/value pair sets the attribute to the passed value. To test this, go to the bookmark submission form and enter the following into the console: >>> $("input").attr("size", "48") Results: <input id="id_url" type="text" size="48" name="url"> <input id="id_title" type="text" size="48" name="title"> <input id="id_tags" type="text" size="48" name="tags"> (Output may slightly differ depending on the versions of Firefox and Firebug). This will change the sizes of all input elements on the page at once to 48. In addition, there are shortcut methods to get and set commonly used attributes, such as val() which returns the value of an input field when called without arguments, and sets this value to an argument if you pass one. There is also html() which controls the HTML code inside an element. Finally, there are two methods that can be used to attach or detach a CSS class to an element; they are called addClass() and removeClass(). A third method is provided to toggle a CSS class, and it is called toggleClass(). All of these class methods take the name of the class to be changed as a parameter. Manipulating HTML Documents Now that you are comfortable with manipulating HTML elements, let's see how to add new elements or remove existing elements. To insert HTML code before an element, use the before() method, and to insert code after an element, use the after() method. Notice how jQuery methods are well-named and very easy to remember! Let's test these methods by inserting parentheses around tag lists on the user page. Open your user page and enter the following in the Firebug console: >>> $(".tags").before("<strong>(</strong>")>>> $(".tags").after("<strong>)</strong>") You can pass any string you want to - before() or after() - the string may contain plain text, one HTML element or more. These methods offer a very flexible way to dynamically add HTML elements to an HTML document. If you want to remove an element, use the remove() method. For example: $("#nav").remove() Not only does this method hide the element, it also removes it completely from the document tree. If you try to select the element again after using the remove() method, you will get an empty set: >>> $("#nav") Result: [] Of course, this only removes the elements from the current instance of the page. If you reload the page, the elements will appear again. Traversing the Document Tree Although CSS selectors offer a very powerful way to select elements, there are times when you want to traverse the document tree starting from a particular element. For this, jQuery provides several methods. The parent() method returns the parent of the currently selected element. The children() method returns all the immediate children of the selected element. Finally, the find() method returns all the descendants of the currently selected element. All of these methods take an optional CSS selector string to limit the result to elements that match the selector. For example, $("#nav").find ("li") returns all the <li> descendants of #nav. If you want to access an individual element of a group, use the get() method which takes the index of the element as a parameter. $("li").get(0) for example returns the first <li> element out of the selected group. Handling Events Next, we will learn about event handlers. An event handler is a JavaScript function that is invoked when a particular event happens, for example, when a button is clicked or a form is submitted. jQuery provides a large set of methods to attach handlers to events; events of particular interest in our application are mouse clicks and form submissions. To handle the event of clicking on an element, we select this element and call the click() method on it. This method takes an event handler function as a parameter. Let's try this using the Firebug console. Open the main page of the application, and insert a button after the welcome message: >>> $("p").after("<button id="test-button">Click me!</button>") (Notice that we had to escape the quotations in the strings passed to the after() method.) If you try to click this button, nothing will happen, so let's attach an event handler to it: >>> $("#test-button").click(function () { alert("You clicked me!"); }) Now, when you click the button, a message box will appear. How did this work? The argument that we passed to click() may look a bit complicated, so let's examine it again: function () { alert("You clicked me!"); } This appears to be a function declaration but without a function name. Indeed, this construct creates what is called an anonymous function in JavaScript terminology, and it is used when you need to create a function on the fly and pass it as an argument to another function. We could have avoided using anonymous functions and declared the event handler as a regular function: >>> function handler() { alert("You clicked me!"); }>>> $("#test-button").click(handler) The above code achieves the same effect, but the first one is more concise and compact. I highly recommend you to get used to anonymous functions in JavaScript (if you are not already), as I'm sure you will appreciate this construct and find it more readable after using it for a while. Handling form submissions is very similar to handling mouse clicks. First, you select the form, and then you call the submit() method on it and pass the handler as an argument. We will use this method many times while adding Ajax features to our project in later sections. Sending Ajax Requests Before we finish this section, let's talk about Ajax requests. jQuery provides many ways to send Ajax requests to the server. There is, for example, the load() method which takes a URL and loads the page at this URL into the selected element. There are also methods for sending GET or POST requests, and receiving the results. We will examine these methods in more depth while implementing Ajax features in our project. What Next? This wraps up our quick introduction to jQuery. The information provided in this section will be enough to continue with this article, and once you finish the article, you will be able to implement many interesting Ajax features on your own. But please keep in mind that this jQuery introduction is only the tip of the iceberg. You can find out more about the book at: http://www.packtpub.com/jQuery Implementing Live Searching of Bookmarks We will start introducing Ajax into our application by implementing live searching. The idea behind this feature is simple: when the user types a few keywords into a text field and clicks search, a script works behind the scenes to fetch search results and present them on the same page. The search page does not reload, thus saving bandwidth, and providing a better and more responsive user experience. Before we start implementing this, we need to keep in mind an important rule while working with Ajax: write your application so that it works without Ajax, and then introduce Ajax to it. If you do so, you ensure that everyone will be able to use your application, including users who don't have JavaScript enabled and those who use browsers without Ajax support. Implementing Searching So before we work with Ajax, let's write a simple view that searches bookmarks by title. First of all, we need to create a search form, so open bookmarks/forms.py and add the following class to it: class SearchForm(forms.Form): query = forms.CharField( label='Enter a keyword to search for', widget=forms.TextInput(attrs={'size': 32})) As you can see, it's a pretty straightforward form class with only one text field. This field will be used by the user to enter search keywords. Next, let's create a view for searching. Open bookmarks/views.py and enter the following code into it: def search_page(request): form = SearchForm() bookmarks = [] show_results = False if request.GET.has_key('query'): show_results = True query = request.GET['query'].strip() if query: form = SearchForm({'query' : query}) bookmarks = Bookmark.objects.filter (title__icontains=query)[:10] variables = RequestContext(request, { 'form': form, 'bookmarks': bookmarks, 'show_results': show_results, 'show_tags': True, 'show_user': True })return render_to_response('search.html', variables) Apart from a couple of method calls, the view should be very easy to understand. We first initialize three variables, form which holds the search form, bookmarks which holds the bookmarks that we will display in the search results, and show_results which is a Boolean flag. We use this flag to distinguish between two cases: The search page was requested without a search query. In this case, we shouldn't display any search results, not even a "No bookmarks found" message. The search page was requested with a search query. In this case, we display the search results, or a "No bookmarks found" message if the query does not match any bookmarks. We need the show_results flag because the bookmarks variable alone is not enough to distinguish between the above two cases. bookmarks will empty when the search page is requested without a query, and it will also be empty when the query does not match any bookmarks. Next, we check whether a query was sent by calling the has_key method on the request.GET dictionary: if request.GET.has_key('query'): show_results = True query = request.GET['query'].strip() if query: form = SearchForm({'query' : query}) bookmarks = Bookmark.objects.filter(title__icontains=query)[:10] We use GET instead of POST here because the search form does not create or change data; it merely queries the database, and the general rule is to use GET with forms that query the database, and POST with forms that create, change or delete records from the database. If a query was submitted by the user, we set show_results to True and call strip() on the query string to ensure that it contains non-whitespace characters before we proceed with searching. If this is indeed the case, we bind the form to the query and retrieve a list of bookmarks that contain the query in their title. Searching is done by using a method called filter in Bookmark.objects. This is the first time that we have used this method; you can think of it as the equivalent of a SELECT statements in Django models. It receives the search criteria in its arguments and returns search results. The name of each argument must adhere to the following naming convention: field__operator Note that field and operator are separated by two underscores: field is the name of the field that we want to search by and operator is the lookup method that we want to use. Here is a list of the commonly-used operators: exact: The value of the argument is an exact match of the field. contains: The field contains the value of the argument. startswith: The field starts with the value of the argument. lt: The field is less than the value of the argument. gt: The field is greater than the value of the argument. Also, there are case-insensitive versions of the first three operators: iexact, icontains and istartswith. After this explanation of the filter method, let's get back to our search view. We use the icontains operator to get a list of bookmarks that match the query and retrieve the first ten items using Python's list slicing syntax. Finally we pass all the variables to a template called search.html to render the search page. Now create the search.html template in the templates directory with the following content: {% extends "base.html" %}{% block title %}Search Bookmarks{% endblock %}{% block head %}Search Bookmarks{% endblock %}{% block content %}<form id="search-form" method="get" action="."> {{ form.as_p }} <input type="submit" value="search" /></form><div id="search-results"> {% if show_results %} {% include 'bookmark_list.html' %} {% endif %}</div>{% endblock %} The template consists of familiar aspects that we have used before. We build the results list by including the bookmark_list.html like we did when building the user and tag pages. We gave the search form an ID, and rendered the search results in a div identified by another ID so that we can interact with them using JavaScript later. Notice how many times the include template tag saved us from writing additional code? It also lets us modify the look of the bookmarks list by editing a single file. This Django template feature is indeed very helpful in organizing and managing templates. Before you test the new view, add an entry for it in urls.py: urlpatterns = patterns('', # Browsing (r'^$', main_page), (r'^user/(w+)/$', user_page), (r'^tag/([^s]+)/$', tag_page), (r'^tag/$', tag_cloud_page), (r'^search/$', search_page),) Now test the search view by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:8000/search/ and experiment with it. Thanks to our modular code, the task will turn out to be much simpler than it may seem. Implementing Live Searching To implement live searching, we need to do two things: Intercept and handle the event of submitting the search form. This can be done using the submit() method of jQuery. Use Ajax to load the search results in the back scenes, and insert them into the page. This can be done using the load() method of jQuery as we will see next. jQuery offers a method called load() that retrieves a page from the server and inserts its contents into the selected element. In its simplest form, the function takes the URL of the remote page to be loaded as a parameter. First of all, let's modify our search view a little so that it only returns search results without the rest of the search page when it receives an additional GET variable called ajax. We do so to enable JavaScript code on the client-side to easily retrieve search results without the rest of the search page HTML. This can be done by simply using the bookmark_list.html template instead of search.html when request.GET contains the key ajax. Open bookmarks/views.py and modify search_page (towards the end) so that it becomes as follows: def search_page(request): [...] variables = RequestContext(request, { 'form': form, 'bookmarks': bookmarks, 'show_results': show_results, 'show_tags': True, 'show_user': True }) if request.GET.has_key('ajax'): return render_to_response('bookmark_list.html', variables) else: return render_to_response('search.html', variables) Next, create a file called search.js in the site_media directory and link it to templates/search.html like this: {% extends "base.html" %}{% block external %} <script type="text/javascript" src="/site_media/search.js"> </script>{% endblock %}{% block title %}Search Bookmarks{% endblock %}{% block head %}Search Bookmarks{% endblock %}[...] Now for the fun part! Let's create a function that loads search results and inserts them into the corresponding div. Write the following code into site_media/search.js: function search_submit() { var query = $("#id_query").val(); $("#search-results").load( "/search/?ajax&query=" + encodeURIComponent(query) ); return false;} Let's go through this function line by line: The function first gets the query string from the text field using the val() method. We use the load() method to get search results from the search_page view, and insert the search results into the #search-results div. The request URL is constructed by first calling encodeURIComponent on query, which works exactly like the urlencode filter we used in Django templates. Calling this function is important to ensure that the constructed URL remains valid even if the user enters special characters into the text field such as &. After escaping query, we concatenate it with /search/?ajax&query=. This URL invokes the search_page view and passes the GET variables ajax and query to it. The view returns search results, and the load() method in turn loads the results into the #search-results div. We return false from the function to tell the browser not to submit the form after calling our handler. If we don't return false in the function, the browser will continue to submit the form as usual, and we don't want that. One little detail remains; where and when to attach search_submit to the submit event of the search form? A rule of a thumb when writing JavaScript is that we cannot manipulate elements in the document tree before the document finishes loading. Therefore, our function must be invoked as soon as the search page is loaded. Fortunately for us, jQuery provides a method to execute a function when the HTML document is loaded. Let's utilize it by appending the following code to site_media/search.js: $(document).ready(function () { $("#search-form").submit(search_submit);}); $(document) selects the document element of the current page. Notice that there are no quotations around document; it's a variable provided by the browser, not a string. ready() is a method that takes a function and executes it as soon as the selected element finishes loading. So in effect, we are telling jQuery to execute the passed function as soon as the HTML document is loaded. We pass an anonymous function to the ready() method; this function simply binds search_submit to the submit event of the form #search-form. That's it. We've implemented live searching with less than fifteen lines of code. To test the new functionality, navigate to http://127.0.0.1:8000/search/, submit queries, and notice how the results are displayed without reloading the page: The information covered in this section can be applied to any form that needs to be processed in the back scenes without reloading the page. You can, for example, create a comment form with a preview button that loads the preview in the same page without reloading. In the next section, we will enhance the user page to let users edit their bookmarks in place, without navigating away from the user page. Editing Bookmarks in Place Editing of posted content is a very common task in web sites. It's usually implemented by offering an edit link next to content. When clicked, this link takes the user to a form located on another page where content can be edited. When the user submits the form, they are redirected back to the content page. Imagine, on the other hand, that you could edit content without navigating away from the content page. When you click edit, the content is replaced with a form. When you submit the form, it disappears and the updated content appears in its place. Everything happens on the same page; edit form rendering and submission are done using JavaScript and Ajax. Wouldn't such a workflow be more intuitive and responsive? The technique described above is called in-place editing. It is now finding its way into web applications and becoming more common. We will implement this feature in our application by letting the user edit their bookmarks in place on the user page. Since our application doesn't support the editing of bookmarks yet, we will implement this first, and then modify the editing procedure to work in place. Implementing Bookmark Editing We already have most of the parts that are needed to implement bookmark editing. This was easy to do thanks to the get_or_create method provided by data models. This little detail greatly simplifies the implementation of bookmark editing. Here is what we need to do: We pass the URL of the bookmark that we want to edit as a GET variable named url to the bookmark_save_page view. We modify bookmark_save_page so that it populates the fields of the bookmark form if it receives the GET variable. The form is populated with the data of the bookmark that corresponds to the passed URL. When the populated form is submitted, the bookmark will be updated as we explained earlier, because it will look like the user submitted the same URL another time. Before we implement the technique described above, let's reduce the size of bookmark_save_page by moving the part that saves a bookmark to a separate function. We will call this function _bookmark_save. The underscore at the beginning of the name tells Python not to import this function when the views module is imported. The function expects a request and a valid form object as parameters; it saves a bookmark out of the form data, and returns this bookmark. If this is the case, it loads the corresponding Link and Bookmark objects of this URL, and binds all the data to a bookmark saving form. You may wonder why we load the Link and Bookmark objects in a try-except construct that silently ignores exceptions. Indeed, it's perfectly valid to raise an Http404 exception if no bookmark was found for the requested URL. But our code chooses to only populate the URL field in this situation, leaving the title and tags fields empty.

Formatting the Data View The default data view that we are presented with uses uninspiring black serif text on a white background. We can jazz up our data view using two different methods: Direct Formatting It is possible to apply formatting directly to a data view by highlighting the cells that we wish to format and then using the formatting tools. This can be a good option if we only want to format a single data view but is not the best approach if we would like to apply our formatting on a site-wide basis. CSS Formatting A more manageable way to apply formatting to our data views is to make the changes across the entire site by editing our style sheet. When we click in the cell that has the Price heading in it, notice that a tag appears above it, telling us that this cell is referred to as th.ms-vh. That is to say that it is a table heading <th> element that is being rendered using the ms-vh class (which stands for Microsoft View Heading). Similarly, if we click in any of the cells further down the data view, we see that they are referred to as td.ms-vb (standing for Microsoft View Body). This reference is used to specify the format of the cells in our table that display the actual data. In addition, there is an ms-alternating class that renders every other row with a different background color. To allow us to edit our styles, we must first create a new blank style sheet, which we will call share.css: Select File | New | CSS. Go to File | Save. Give the file the name share. Save the file as CSS Files file type. Click Save. The next step is to attach our style sheet to our site so that our pages can refer the styles that we will create within the style sheet: Open the Apply Styles task pane. Click Attach Style Sheet. Click Browse. Browse to share.css and click it. Click Open. Under Attach to, check All HTML pages. Click OK. Click Close on the information dialog. We will then make our style sheet ready to use by defining some styles. Adding the following code to the style sheet will change the ms-vh and ms-vb classes so that they are formatted in a more inspiring manner: th.ms-vh, td.ms-vb {font-family:gill sans, gill sans mt, arial, sans-serif;}th.ms-vh {border-width:0px;background-color:#903;color:#FFF;}td.ms-vb {color:#903;border-top-width:0px;border-left-width:0px;border-right-width:0px;border-bottom-width:1px;border-bottom-style:dashed;font-style:italic;}ourtable{border-width:0px;} Notice how the first line of our style sheet refers both ms-vh and ms-vb, with a comma separating them. This allows us to specify the font face in one place rather than needing to enter it separately into each class. Grouping styles in this way not only saves time when creating our site but also makes the site more easily maintainable when we and other people make changes in the future. If you are eagle-eyed, you will also notice that the color references (e.g. #903) only have three digits rather than six. This is possible when a color has repeating numbers (e.g. 99 or 00), allowing us to condense #990033 to #903. If you are not familiar with using CSS, do not be put off using it because it is easy to learn. We also get a helping hand, because when we type code into the style sheet, SharePoint Designer uses IntelliSense to suggest code we may like to use. Once we have saved our style sheet, SharePoint Designer instantly reflects changes to the style sheet in the Design view of products.aspx. When creating our td.ms-vb style, we specified that dashed lines should appear below each cell. By default, SharePoint Designer has a default value of 0 for our borders, meaning that they will not display. In order for the dotted lines to appear, we will need to make sure that our table has a border value of 1. We can do this by highlighting the whole table and typing 1 into the border attribute in our Tag Properties task pane. Selecting ourtable as the class for the table in this task pane will remove the solid border, allowing our dashed lines to be visible in all their glory. We can take our formatting even further and use CSS to format the delete and insert text links so they look like buttons, by giving them a border and some padding. We can also give our "buttons" a different background color whenever the cursor is positioned over them.

Procedural Textures vs. Bitmap Textures Blender has basically two types of textures, which are procedural textures and bitmap textures. Each one has both positive and negative points. Which one is the best will depend on your project needs. Procedural: This kind of texture is generated by the software at rendering time, just like vector lines. This means that it won't depend on any type of image file. The best thing about this type of texture is that it is resolution independent, so we can set the texture to be rendered with high resolutions with minimum loss of quality. The negative point about this kind of texture is that it's harder to get realistic textures with it. Bitmap: To use this kind of texture, we will need an image file, such as a JPEG, PNG, or TGA file. The good thing about these textures is that we can achieve very realistic materials with it quickly. On the other hand, we must find the texture file before using it. And there is more. If you are creating a high resolution render, the texture file must be big. Texture Library Do you remember the way we organized materials? We can do exactly the same thing about textures. Besides setting names and storing the Blender files to import and use again later, collecting bitmap textures is another important point. Even if you don't start right away, it's important to know where to look for textures. So here is a small list of websites that provides free texture download. http://www.blender-textures.org http://www.cgtextures.com http://blender-archi.tuxfamily.org/textures Applying Textures To use a texture, we must apply a material to an object, and then use the texture with this material. We always use the texture inside a material. For instance, to make a plane that simulates a marble floor, we have to use a texture and set up how the surface will react to light and texture, which can give the surface a proper look of marble using any texture. To do that, we must use the texture panel, which is located right next to the materials button. We can use a keyboard shortcut to open this panel: just hit F6. There is a way to add a texture in the material panel as well, with a menu called Texture. The best way to get all the options is to add the texture on the texture panel. On this panel, we will be able to see a lot of buttons, which represent the texture channels. Each one of these channels can hold a texture. The final texture will be a mix of all the channels. If we have a texture at channel 1 and another texture at channel 2, these textures will be blended and represented in the material. Before adding a new texture, we must select a channel by clicking over one of them. Usually the first channel is selected, but if you want to use another one, just click on the channel. When the channel is selected, just click the Add New button to add a new texture. The texture controls are very similar to the material controls. We can set a name for the texture at the top, or erase it if we don't want it anymore. With the selector, we can choose a previously created texture too—just click and select. Now comes the fun part. Having added a texture, we have to choose a texture type. To do that, we click on the texture type combo box. There are a lot of textures, but most of them are procedural textures and we won't use them much. The only texture type that isn't procedural is the image type. We can use textures like Clouds and Wood to create some effects and give surfaces a more complex look, or even create a grass texture with some dirt on it. But most times, the texture type that we will be using will be the Image type. Each texture has its own set of parameters to determine how it will look in the object. If we add a Wood texture, it will show the configuration parameters at the right. If we choose as texture type Clouds, the parameters showed at the right will be completely different. With the image texture type it's not different, this kind of texture has its own type of setup. This is the control panel: To show how to set up a texture, let's use an image file that represents a wood floor and a plane. We can apply the texture to this plane and set up how it's going to look, testing all the parameters. The first thing to do is assign a material to the plane, and add a texture to this material. We choose as texture type the Image option. It will show the configuration options for this kind of texture. To apply the image as a texture to the plane, just click on the Load button, situated on the Image menu. When we hit this button, we will be able to select the image file. Locate the image file and the texture will be applied. If we want to have more control over how this texture is organized and placed on the plane, we need to learn how the controls work. Every time you make any changes to the setup of a texture, these changes will be shown in the preview window; use it a lot to make good changes. Here is a list of what some of the buttons can do for the texture: UseAlpha: If the texture has an alpha channel, we have to press this button for Blender calculate the channel. An image has an alpha channel when some kind of transparency is stored in the image. For instance, a .png file with transparent background has an alpha channel. We can use this to create a texture with a logo, for a bottle, or to add an image of a tree or person to a plane. Rot90: With this option we can rotate the texture by 90 degrees. Repeat: Every texture must be distributed on the object surface, and repeating the texture in lines and columns is the default way to do that. Extended: If this button is pressed, the texture will be adjusted to fit all the object surface area. Clip: With this option, the texture will be cropped and we will be able to show only a part of it. To adjust which parts of the texture will be displayed, use the Min/Max X/Y options. Xrepeat / Yrepeat: This option determines how many times a texture is repeated, with the repeat option turned on. Normal Map: If the texture will be used to create Normal Maps, press this button. These are textures used to change the face normals of an object. Still: With this button selected, we can determine that the image used as texture is a still image. This option is marked by default. Movie: If you have to use a movie file as texture, press this button. This is very useful if we need to make something like a theatre projection screen or a tv screen. Sequence: We can use a sequence of images as texture too; just press this button. It works the same ways as with a movie file. There are a few more parameters, like the Reload button. If your texture file suffers any kind of change, we must press this button for the changes get accepted by Blender. The X button can erase this texture; use it if you need to select another image file. When we add a texture to any material, an external link is created with this file. This link can be absolute or relative. When we add a texture called "wood.png", which is located at the root of your main hard disk, like C:, a link to this texture will be created like this: "c:wood.png", so every time you open this file, the software will look for that file at that exact place. This is an absolute link, but we can use a relative link as well. For instance, when we add a texture located in the same folder as our scene, a relative link will be created. Every time we use an absolute link and we have to move the ".blend" file to another computer, the texture file must go with it. To imbue the image file with the .blend, just press the icon of gift package. To save all the textures used in a scene, just access the file menu and use the Pack Data option. It will make all the texture files embedded with the source blend file. Mapping Every time we add a texture to any object, we must choose a mapping type to set up how the texture will be applied to the object. For instance, if we have a wall and apply a wood texture, it must be placed like wallpaper. But for cylindrical or spherical objects, or even walls, we have to set up in a way that makes the texture adaptable to the topology of the surface, to avoid effects such as a stretched texture. To set this up, we use the mapping options, which are located on the Map Input menu. On this menu, we can choose between four basic mapping types which are Cube, Sphere, Flat, and Tube. If you have a wall, choose the option that matches the topology type with the model. In this case, the best choice is the Cube. Another important option here is the UV button, which allows us to use another very powerful type of texturing, based on UV Mapping. Normal Map This is a special and useful type of texture, that can change the normals of surfaces. If we have a floor and a texture of ceramic tiles, the surface can be represented with smaller details of that tiling, using this kind of a map. It's almost like modeling the tiles. But everything is created using just a normal map. To use this kind of texture, we must turn on the Nor button on the Map To menu. When this button is turned on, we can set up the Nor slider to determine the intensity of the normal displacement. It works based on the pixel color of the texture. With white pixels, the normals are not affected, and with black pixels, the normals are fully translated. If you want to optimize the normal mapping, using a special texture is much recommended. Some texture libraries even have this type of normal maps ready for use. They can be called bump maps too. Here is an example of how we can use them. We take a stone texture and a tiled texture with a white background and black lines. The stone texture is applied to the floor, and the tiled texture is used to create a tiling for the floor. The setup for that is really simple. Just apply the texture at a lower channel, and turn off the Col button for this channel. Turn on the Nor button, and this texture will affect only the normals and not the material color. Any image can be used as a normal map, but we will always get better results with a greyscale image prepared to be used as a normal map. Now, just set up the Nor intensity with the slider, and see the render. Turn on positive and turn on negativeSome of the buttons on the Map To menu can be turned on with positive and negative values. For instance, the Nor option can be turned on with one click. If we click on it again, the Nor text will turn yellow. This means that the Nor is inverted with negative values. Some other buttons may present the same option.
