Rogério has a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a M.Sc. In Computational Biology, both from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Academically, he is a Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) enthusiast and teaches various subjects in Computer Science and IT at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo, Brazil. He was a technical reviewer of Packt's “edX E-Learning Course Marketing”.Rogério's first contact with Java was during the days of the transition from Java 1.0 to Java 1.1. His first projects in Java are available in a repository in dating back to 1999 on his GitHub account. After graduating from his M.Sc. studies in 2003 and starting his role as an academic instructor, he has been working with many languages (including C, C++, Java, C, Perl, and Python) and technologies. His more serious involvement with FOSS started with contribution to the Debian Project in 2005 and, more formally, as an official Debian Maintainer since 2008, contributing programs also to Ubuntu and other Debian Derivatives. He is the author, coauthor or maintainer of a number of projects, with two of the most prominent being coursera-dl and edx-dl, dedicated to helping users of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) download materials for their study from MOOC platforms. While working with these technologies, he has always been interested in the languages that can run on the JVM, the basis on which most Java programs run. He is particularly interested in languages that provide functional features like Scala, Clojure and Kotlin, which are able to seamlessly work with existing and popular Java libraries and frameworks. He is also interested in how features of functional programming have been gradually been incorporated into Java (especially with the release of Java 8).Last, but not least, he is very excited with the use of the Java language to build Android applications. You can follow him on GitHub, on Twitter, and on LinkedIn.
