Pentaho Corporation, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence (BI), and Packt Publishing today announced the availability of the book Pentaho Reporting 3.5 for Java Developers (ISBN: 978-1-847193-19-3, Paperback: 384 pages). Written by Will Gorman, Engineering Team Lead at Pentaho, this practical guide walks through every aspect of Pentaho Reporting.
Reporting has become an integral part of almost every enterprise software application as it lets organizations unlock data from systems and deliver critical information to users to support business processes and decision making. Pentaho Reporting lets users design, generate, and distribute rich and sophisticated report content from a broad range of data sources and produce popular formats including HTML, Adobe PDF and Microsoft Excel. Commercial open source reporting has become increasingly popular as it provides significantly lower TCO along with greater flexibility for integration and customization. Pentaho Reporting is now the most widely used open source reporting product, as demonstrated in a recent survey by BeyeNETWORK, sponsored by Actuate, and available at http://tinyurl.com/reportingsurvey .
The book jump starts the reader’s understanding of the tools and technology in Pentaho Reporting. Through detailed examples, it covers all aspects of report design and information delivery, with in-depth topics on charting, cross-tabs, sub-reports and embedding reports into custom Java applications. There are also details and examples on extending Pentaho’s open source reporting engine and straightforward steps to create custom functions and report elements.
Topics covered in this book include:
- Pentaho Reporting installation and quick start overview
- Designing attractive and effective reports that render as PDF, Excel, and HTML using Pentaho Report Designer
- Enhancing reports with rich chart visualizations and graphics
- Delivering parameterized, user-prompted reports that minimize IT maintenance and empower business users with self-service, on-demand reporting capabilities
- Building reports programmatically with simple XML and Java APIs
- Embedding Pentaho Reporting into custom java applications
"There has been tremendous demand from our developer community for a resource that goes deeper into our technology than traditional feature documentation,” said Will Gorman, author and engineering team lead at Pentaho. “’Pentaho Reporting 3.5 for Java Developers’ opens up our best-in-class reporting engine to a wider community of developers and partners looking to deliver standalone or embedded reporting capabilities."
