Node.js is a software platform for scalable server-side and networking applications. Node.js applications are written in JavaScript and can be run within the Node.js runtime on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux with no changes. Node.js applications are designed to maximize throughput and efficiency, using non-blocking I/O and asynchronous events. Node.js applications run single-threaded, although Node.js uses multiple threads for file and network events. Node.js is commonly used for real-time applications due to its asynchronous nature.

Node Cookbook: Second Edition shows readers how to transfer JavaScript skills to server-side programming. It walks readers through the various server-side scenarios, saving their time and effort by demonstrating best practices and showing them how to avoid security faux pas.

Beginning with making a web server, the recipes are designed to allow smooth progression through Node in order to help readers design full web applications, command-line applications, and Node modules. The book also extensively covers using popular frameworks such as Express 4 and Socket.IO, writing Node modules, and different ways to take apps live.

The book covers the following essential topics:
Chapter 1: Making a Web Server
Chapter 2: Exploring the HTTP Object
Chapter 3: Working with Data Serialization
Chapter 4: Interfacing with Databases
Chapter 5: Employing Streams
Chapter 6: Going Real Time
Chapter 7: Accelerating Development with Express
Chapter 8: Implementing Security, Encryption, and Authentication
Chapter 9: Integrating Network Paradigms
Chapter 10: Writing Your Own Node Modules
Chapter 11: Taking It Live
