Learn to install and configure Cfengine using Packt’s new book

November 2011 | Open Source

Packt has recently published CFEngine 3 Beginner’s Guide a new book that is the first and only book dedicated to the Cfengine framework. Written by Rajneesh, this book covers all Cfengine commands, promises, variables, functions and best practices, and is a step-by-step guide to setting up Cfengine and fully automating the configuration and management of laptops, desktops, servers, or mainframes.

CFEngine is a compact automation framework, which is not a very complex framework, but certainly is extensive. The Cfengine project was actually started in 1993 as a reaction to the complexity and non-portability of shell scripting for UNIX configuration management. Furthermore, Cfengine solutions are used by global organizations such as Facebook, AT&T, Cisco, eBay, LinkedIn, AMD, the U.S. Navy and five of the 10 largest banks on Wall Street.

CFEngine 3 Beginner’s Guide starts off with instructions for installing and configuring the Cfengine server and clients, and moves on to configuring systems using Cfengine scripts. The author then walks the readers through the policy decision flow, conducting system and security audits. This is then followed by detailed discussions, through various examples, on how readers can use Cfengine to configure systems, users, networks, databases, web servers et al.

Using this book, users will learn to install and configure the Cfengine environment including the server and clients, to build complete systems including laptops, desktops, servers, mainframes, etc., to conduct system audits and detect anomalies in the desired state of a system, to monitor services and system states from a centralized policy server, to write difficult work flows to solve complex data centre issues, and to use advanced functions and variables inbuilt in Cfengine.

Part of Packt’s Beginner’s Guide series, this book is ideal for System Administrators or Configuration managers, who don’t have any prior experience of Cfengine, and are looking out for a dependable tool to manage their infrastructure. The book is out now and available from Packt. To read more about it, please visit: www.packtpub.com/cfengine-3-beginners-guide/book.
