Learn how to build an architectural walkthrough using Unity with Packt’s new video course

June 2014 | Architecture and Analysis, Open Source

Packt is pleased to announce the release of Building an Architectural Walkthrough Using Unity, a thorough video course showing an efficient and easy approach to applying an architectural 3D model into your project for quick and reliable results. The duration of the video course is 2 hours and 51 minutes, and it is competitively priced at $33.99.

About the author:

Stefan Boeykens is an architect-engineer from Leuven, Belgium. After his graduation, he was involved in architectural practice for about 4 years, before returning to the KU Leuven for his PhD in 2007. His main research interests are BIM, 3D modeling and visualization, digital historical reconstruction, parametric design, programming, and interoperability between varieties of software tools, with a special focus on openBIM. He is also the author of Unity for Architectural Visualization, Packt Publishing.

Translating CAD or BIM models into a real-time application can seem a tiresome ordeal. Luckily, Unity is very accessible for architects with some 3D experience, and it makes importing and presenting models a fun task to do. Architectural visualization through Unity will help you analyze designs and make related decisions even before the actual building is built.

Starting with 3D models in common architectural software, this course covers how to load these models into Unity and even incorporate model changes. You will refine the building model with better materials and lighting so that it looks attractive to the visitor, and with a few basic scripts, we will add the necessary interactivity and finally export it into an application you can share.

Viewers will learn how to export CAD and BIM models into a format that Unity can use and also optimize the geometry and import settings for clean and reliable results. Adjusting the materials to add bump maps and transparent or reflective effects, adding sunlight with shadows, improving interior lighting with additional lights, and also baking the lighting onto the model with Lightmapping are just some of the topics covered in this course.

The video course covers the following topics:

1. Importing Architectural Models in Unity

2. Navigating an Architectural Model

3. Improving Materials with Shaders and Textures

4. Adding Lights and Shadows

5. Animating Objects and Lighting

6. Scripting to Add Interactivity

7. Expanding the Scripts

8. Presenting the Final Walkthrough
