Get started with computer vision using OpenCV and Python with Packt's new Book

May 2013 | Open Source

Packt is pleased to announce the publication of OpenCV Computer Vision with Python, a practical, hands-on guide that comprehensively explains the essentials of computer vision with OpenCV and Python. With this book, Python developers will gain an in-depth knowledge of all the important aspects of computer vision. This book is also available now in various electronic formats such as, Amazon, Kindle, e-pub and PDF.

About the Author:

Joseph Howse works as an augmented reality software developer at Ad-Dispatch, an augmented reality company. He develops applications for mobile devices, kiosks, and the Web. With a Master of Computer Science degree from Dalhousie University, Joe also does research on software architecture as applied to augmented reality.

OpenCV is a library of programming functions mainly aimed at real-time computer vision. It is free to use under open source and the library is cross-platform. It focuses mainly on real-time image processing. If the library finds Intel's Integrated Performance Primitives on the system, it will use these proprietary optimized routines to accelerate itself.

OpenCV Computer Vision with Python covers not only all the essential areas of computer vision, such as installing Python, NumPy, SciPy, OpenNI, SensorKinect, and preparing the basic setup to get started on various operating systems like on Windows, Mac or Ubuntu, but it also shows readers how to capture, filter, analyze images, handle windows, and input events using OpenCV's HighGui module or Pygame.

This book goes into detail on some advanced topics and highlights the various techniques to peform efficient operations on OpenCV images with NumPy and SciPy, explaining the features of applying an effect only to certain depths in an image using Kinect. Furthermore, readers will learn how to track faces, eyes, noses, and mouths by using prebuilt datasets, as well as arbitrary objects by creating original datasets.

Packt Publishing has also released and is due to publish these other OpenCV books:

OpenCV Computer Vision Application Programming Cookbook (2nd Edition): RAW (Coming soon)

OpenCV 2 Computer Vision Application Programming Cookbook (Published)

Mastering OpenCV with Practical Computer Vision Projects (Published)
