Drupal Wins the First Hall of Fame
Thursday, November 12, 2009 | News | Open Source

Packt Publishing is pleased to announce that Drupal has won the inaugural Hall of Fame Award in the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. Hall of Fame is a new category introduced to the Award this year, featuring a competition between the previous winners of the Award: Drupal and Joomla!.

With this award, Drupal has won two categories this year, the other one being Best Open Source PHP CMS. Drupal spokesperson Kieran Lal told Packt, “it is a great honor for the Drupal community to be the first winner of the Open Source CMS Hall of Fame Award. The Drupal community has worked hard to improve Drupal by adding internationalization, enhancing security, facilitating customization, increasing extensibility, and easing the user experience.” Lal went on to say that, “this award is a great complement to winning the 2009 Open Source PHP CMS for the second year in a row. This critical recognition helps build both momentum and excitement towards releasing Drupal 7 in 2010.”

Along with the competition amongst the previous winners, Hall of Fame also featured two subcategory Awards named after the participants, “Drupal Award”, and “Joomla! Award”. For the Drupal Award, the theme “Zen” turned out to be the public favorite and won the “Best Drupal Theme” title. Zen is a starting theme for Drupal and can be used by designers to modify and create their own custom themes from it. The “Best Drupal Module” title went to “Views”, which provides a flexible method for Drupal site designers to control how lists and tables of content are presented.

For the Joomla! Award, the theme “Affinity” ended up with the most votes and won the “Best Joomla! Theme”. One of the most distinguishing features of Affinity is that it allows you the ability to interact with the layout of your site by moving different areas of your site with graphically integrated handles. Among the extensions, “noixACL”, one of the very popular ACLs for Joomla!, received the highest votes and won the “Best Joomla! Extension”.

For the 2010 Award, Hall of Fame will feature a competition between Drupal, Joomla! and the winner of this year’s Overall Open Source CMS Award.

With this announcement, the 2009 Open Source CMS Award has one more category left, the Best Overall Open Source CMS, for which results will be announced on November 13.
